Reading @josie.zone's #beckbook and then seeing him in concert a week later is a hell of a thing. Hard not to read Beck's performance and the austere Ride Lonesome set design/choreography through the book's tragic lens, even knowing that projecting stuff onto Beck is kinda his whole deal.

I have not played Star Wars Galactic Racer yet, but just reading the reviews is a great reminder that racing games (as with all sports games) are much better served by great characters than great vehicles. See also: a little indie called Mario Kart

YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST, FOLKS: ESCAPE FROM DINO ISLAND IS BETTER THAN DUNGEONS & DRAGONS 5E #ttrpg

Realizing my TV experience was the opposite (but equally great): My parents had a "we only turn on the TV to watch something specific" rule, so even a mid-season episode of whatever middling series we were watching had the feel of an event.

linear TV was genuinely addictive because of the inability to watch what you want. Inconsistent but paced-out rewards the same as a skinner box. You got a big jackpot dopamine bonanza when your favorite Simpsons episode was randomly on syndication that day or came across an MST3k marathon

It's also easy to forget how much the TV networks played this aspect up with "special presentation" bumpers and host introductions for movies (even TV movies), themed marathons, etc. We really only get this kind of stuff on streaming around Halloween and Christmas now and it's a pale imitation.

One of those “once you see it…” things.

One thing I notice though: every story I read about bike lanes tends to be illustrated with a photo of a white person in neon cycling gear and a helmet when a lot of the folks it actually helps are day laborers on cheap bikes and working folks on share bikes

I don't think I realized until RIGHT THIS MOMENT that Summer 1998 was when I, like, started caring about music. Incredible playlist.

So many CDs I absolutely treasured represented here: Hello Nasty, You've Come A Long Way Baby..., Stunt, Big Willie Style, the Armageddon and Matrix soundtracks. I remember buying the Ava Adore CD single and being like "what the fuck IS this??"

RPG folks: Sera is a voracious player and reader of games, with strong, smart opinions and a heroically open mind. I can’t imagine a better Ennies judge

Voting for the 2026 ENNIE Awards is live! I’m one of the candidates to be a judge next year, and I’m asking for your vote! In this thread I’ll explain what that means, why you should vote for me, and where you can read more of my thoughts on tabletop games. vote.ennie-awards.com/vote/2026/ 1/

Really into this thread. Technically I started with 3rd edition of 40k, but lately I've become sort of obsessed with the "2e" style of narrative that defines my early gaming experience and (to my eyes) has been out of style for a while now. I miss it!

Strong pick, but Super Mario Bros predates it by 3 full years. Also, I don’t know if I can count it because I never actually saw the movie, but I distinctly remember reading the novelization of Street Fighter, looking at all the photos and going, “Oh.”
