In a preliminary hearing on Thursday, the judge ruled that the Dept of Health has overstepped by issuing a declaration that called treatments like puberty blockers, hormone therapy and surgeries unsafe and ineffective for young people experiencing gender dysphoria.

The declaration was clearly designed to try to coerce & intimidate doctors & medical centers from providing gender affirming care to trans youth by threatening the removal of Medicare and Medicaid funding if doctors provided such care.

Here in Washington State, we remain committed to protecting the rights of trans and gender diverse people. Governor Ferguson signed a bill this past week ensuring Washingtonians can change the gender designation on their state IDs and birth certificates without fear of their privacy being violated.

My heart breaks for trans folks in Kansas who are being notified by the state that they need to immediately surrender their drivers licenses. Failing to do so and driving with a now invalid could lead to arrest, charges, and revocation of driving privileges.

“Gay ideology” usually refers to gay people being visible, expressing our identities, forming communities, fighting for our rights, etc. Now “gender ideology” evokes similar in relation to trans folk. And when LGBT people become an “ideology,” our humanity degrades and we become targets for erasure.
