It is wild—and crushingly sad—how quickly corporate America has embraced the most basic pay-to-play business practices ahead of the incoming Trump admin. What would considered illegal overseas under the Foreign Corruption Practices Act is now de rigueur here at home. www.wsj.com/business/med...

This woman is a sociopath

Stephanie Kennedy@wordswithsteph.bsky.social

Kristi Noem staunchly stands behind Trump & his GOP’s vicious threats to withhold disaster relief from victims of wildfires in Southern California—playing politics w/ people’s suffering. Noem’s robotic response to Sen. Bluementhol: “Leadership has consequences.” LEADERSHIP HAS RESPONSIBILITIES.

Thank goodness that other countries are studying this and taking action to resist it. The US will be in the Dark Ages for a while, but the torch will stay lit and we can adopt best practices when the MAGA fever finally breaks. We’re gonna have to go through some things but it will, eventually.

Jenny Cohn@jennycohn.bsky.social

I’m glad that academics in other countries are studying misinformation and disinformation because Trump will shut down much of this research in the US. 1/

President Biden was right to warn us about the #TechIndustrialComplex Oligarchy that has seemingly taken control of our country, a handful of ultra rich white men who are getting richer and richer with every hour that passes

The most ignorant Americans elected Trump and he’s predictably choosing the stupidest and most corrupt cabinet members. I cannot fathom how low we will sink in decency, competence, integrity and reputation. It’s a fucking tragedy.

i am watching clips from the hegseth hearings and it is a goddamn insult to this country that this chucklefuck was even nominated

The issue isn’t whether Universal Healthcare can work. The issue is how do we get from where we are to UH. It took Canada decades and it has a ton of limits we might not like. The point being we have to find a starting point that can grow it into what works here www.canada.ca/en/health-ca...

canada.caCanada's Health Care System - Canada.ca2005 Health Canada report
jrcali.bsky.social@jrcali.bsky.social

Mr Cuban since other developed countries provide healthcare with high life expectancy outcomes at half or less the US’ % to GDP, is it too ‘globalist’ to consider doing it the way others do it? Having been in both the Australian and US systems the latter is a complete cluster.

Exhibit 5,793,632 for why I don’t want to live in a world represented by Fox News. It’s all zero sum. You can’t have a choir, or celebrate freedom, or help the homeless at the same time you fight fires. These are small amounts in a HUGE budget. Just deplorable culture war BS. Garbage.

Peter Morley ♿️@petermorley.bsky.social

This is what Fox News chooses to speak about. Nitpicking at diversity & LGBTQ+ line items in the budget? Where the HELL is the information about how to help these people majorly impacted by the LA fires? Where’s the resources? Where are the emergency numbers? Any updated info? Absolutely sickening.🤬

Kirk: Left wing Dems living in LA deserve to have their homes destroyed because they voted for Biden and Harris. But boy - anyone that thinks Republican governance is more competent is insane. TX can’t keep the lights on. People are sicker, poorer, hungrier and more ignorant.

Sarah Longwell@sarahlongwell25.bsky.social

Charlie Kirk seems to think lesbians are responsible for the LA Fires. I dissent.

Maybe Trump isn’t a genius engineer or businessman

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

Outside Corpus Christi, Texas—where water is so scarce they hand out shower timers at HS football games—Elon Musk is building a $1B lithium refinery that could need 8 million gallons of water a day. Tesla is testing the plant, but they still don’t have the water to run it. What gives?!

I am overwhelmed by disappointment and a feeling of desperate urgency. Instead of running toward this existential problem and applying our best minds to solve it - the stupidest, most cynical and greedy people are in charge and are doing the opposite. Our descendants will curse us.

Appropriate mix of headlines. Climate change accelerates, while the business world, under pressure from US conservatives, abandons any attempt to stop it

Women "are less likely to have criminal records, accounting for just 30% of juvenile arrests, according to data from the Justice Department. They're also outpacing men in higher education, with nearly half of women aged 25 to 34 holding bachelor's degrees compared to 37% of men, according to Pew..."

Evangelical Christians view Trump as God’s chosen warrior. Yet he’s the embodiment of the anti-Christ. He elevates greed, lust, gluttony, vanity, cruelty and yet they pray for and enable his success. He will bring so much needless suffering to so many. I weep.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

it is so important to remember that IN THE MOMENT there was no one who thought jan. 6 was some innocent protest gone awry. everyone recognized it for what it was.

People like Mike Johnson are living in a fantasy world constructed in their imaginations - designed to reinforce their worldview. I prefer my leaders to live in the real world, confront facts and solve real problems.

We are doomed

Mark Cuban@mcuban.bsky.social

Why are Bezos, Zuckerberg, Musk, Pichai and Tim Cook visiting and giving money to Trump ? Because they are in “The Race “ to become the dominant platform in the world. Amazon/Anthropic vs FB/LLama vs Google/Gemini vs Twitter/Grok, vs IPhones/ChatGpt is the penultimate global power war ever.

It’s going to have to get much worse to break through the ignorance, greed, lack of empathy and bigotry.

JoJoFromJerz@jojofromjerz.bsky.social

Donald Trump is once again going to use the power of the Oval Office to enflame division, embolden bigotry & encourage violence. We’ve seen this movie before folks. It sure as shit did not end well. How the actual fuck is it even possible that we have to endure this shit again.

And I’ll bet that 100% of these raw water enthusiasts have never looked through a microscope

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i would have no problem with this “health freedom” movement — i do not particularly care if these people decide that they want to die at 40 after a bad bout with dysentery — if not for their insistence on foisting this bullshit on children

my armchair psychological diagnosis is that the drive to accumulate as much wealth as possible eats away at the drive for self-improvement or the internal desire to cultivate any skills or tastes. these people build huge mounds of treasure and then essentially just sit around looking at it, empty.

It grimly looks as if the Putin regime so ardently championed by the incoming US administration and the owner of X/Twitter has shot down another civilian airliner, killing 38 people aboard.

when you have anti-DEI proponents openly going after black military officers for recruiting from HBCUs and suing schools for their black and Hispanic enrollment *even after the schools ended any racial preferences* then the only honest label for these people is "segregationist"

I normally am a cautiously optimistic person who gets along with almost everyone. But man - I realize I’m expressing a lot of anger and hostility about my fellow citizens on this platform. Sorry about that. I’m clearly still angry and bewildered about the election.

Republicans cannot govern and the fools that put Trump and Co back in the White House will feel the consequences of their ignorance and stupidity. Unfortunately the rest of us will too.

For-profit healthcare is extortion. You’re making money off of desperate people. You want us to treat your cancer? Pay up! Or suffer and die. I worked my whole career in biotech and pharma. Yeah, you’re helping to save people’s lives. But it isn’t altruism if people can’t afford the medicine.

Looks like Rep Loudermilk is a telecom guy who was in the AF and graduated from a Bible college. Doesn’t sound like a lawyer to me. Sounds like a garden-variety MAGA cult member and Trump toadie.

After his successful consolidation of power, the Leader prepares for show trials of those who resisted his first failed putsch.

Every so-called environmentalist that didn’t vote for Harris & really liked RFK or Tulsi - we will get more of this. Your choice to not vote, or to vote for Trump will lead to greater environmental damage. The Trump admin is allied with Russia & staffed w/ climate change denialists. You own this.

Jay in Kyiv@jayinkyiv.bsky.social

Another environmental catastrophe caused by Russians east of Crimea, after one of their decaying oil tankers broke apart on high seas 2 days ago, 35km of pristine coastline has been contaminated in true Russian style. And these tankers are now all over the world.

And guess what? You don’t run the government like a business. I want to scream every time I hear some ignorant fool say this.
