NSF absolutely deserves a Nobel prize in its own right. A pity they don't do posthumous awards.

David Ho@davidho.bsky.social

Oh look, US National Science Foundation-supported science won the Nobel Prize in physics.

TIL that Kluber never made it to 10Ks in 2016

10 strikeouts for Gavin Williams. Fourth instance in Cleveland postseason history -Bartolo Colon: Game 1, 2001 ALDS (10) -Bartolo Colon: Game 1, 1999 ALDS (11) -Charles Nagy: Game 4, 1996 ALDS (12)

Whenever I drop off my kids at school, I hear a decent amount of chatter from other kids: "wow, that's a nice ebike!" It's clear what kind of technology excites the young ones.

I'm going to tell my Physics class that Trump wants to convert the entire US to SI units.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Trump tells the UN he is officially changing the name of Artificial Intelligence to "Super Intelligence" and says all US government documents will now be changed to refer to "SI"

How do you handle? With luck. That's what we did.

Academic couples are similar in terms of career development to being in the armed services that anything else (with deployments lasting 2-3 years then you have to move again). So how do you handle the two-body problem if you're both academics? @physicstoday.aip.org interviews a couple to find out

buckle up. gas and diesel look set for a spike over the next 48 hours, hardest in parts of the nation's interior. i track this for a living and i'll be sharing real-time updates as it unfolds powered by GasBuddy data, looking at many different angles. ready to share w/ you all.

We’re celebrating 30 years of New Adventures in Hi-Fi, released on this day in 1996. Revisit the expanded version of the album here: i.craftrecordings.com/newadventures

The early Roman Emperors are split in two clear groups: Augustus, Claudius, Vespasianus, etc who at least treated the Senate with respect, and Tiberius, Caligula, Nero... who ignored them for the paper tiger they were. Provosts can be divided into similar groups.

Cristi Proistosescu@cristiproist.bsky.social

In the Roman republic citizens had to wait at least two years between successive (1 year long) magistracies The republic fell apart when these norms eroded My proposal is that faculty should spend at least two years as regular faculty b/w (max 3 year long) appointments as deans/provost/president.

Awesome! 10 miles on a hill flattening ebike should clear out many commutes and good deserts in Cleveland. I know it's my main mode of commute now!

Wet bulb Glob temperature of 27C in the Midwest is scary, but I guess it is safe to add another 2C to account for heat islands in the cities. That's deathly.

The U.S. Postal Service won’t deliver mail ballots in states that refuse to turn over lists of voters under a proposed rule, the agency’s chief executive said Wednesday, angering Democrats who warn the decision will disenfranchise voters. ohiocapitaljournal.com/2026/06/24/r...

I propose a new pitching achievement, in the same vein as a Maddux: pitching at least 7 innings, 10 SO, and at most 2Earned Runs, still earning a loss. We'll call it a Bibee.

Tim Stebbins@timstebbins.bsky.social

Parker Messick up to 10 strikeouts tonight, a new career high. He's doing all he can tonight.

NCAR just won in court! A US district judge in Colorado has prohibited NSF from taking #NCAR apart, specifically in spalling off its supercomputing center in Wyoming. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us... Our earlier story on this and why it matters: www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪

NSF will be spending 150 million/yr through the TIP directorate to "advance breakthrough science outside of traditional institutions." What are traditional institutions in this context? Unclear. But traditionally, NSF has put funding towards institutions of higher education.

Remember Sharpiegate? That was such a masterclass of relative intelligence.

RFK Jr: "A Democratic senator claimed it's mathematically impossible to have a drug drop by 600%. I said, 'Well, if the drug was $100 and it raises to $600, that would be a 600% rise. If it drops from $600 to $100, that's a 600% savings.'" Trump: "Right"

Welp.

Dan Garisto@dangaristo.bsky.social

NEW: NSF has been funding research at a fraction of its historic rate. Last week, the agency finally began distributing money to its directorates and is now likely to pick up the grantmaking pace. But these allocations also amount to substantial cuts across the sciences. My reporting:

This might be a good (additional) reason not to slash ARM/ASR from the presidential budget proposal. Just spit balling here.

In the town of Lamont, Oklahoma east of Blackwell and near the Kansas border, a Department of Energy atmospheric monitoring station sniffed out a compound never before detected in the air over North America. And it’s toxic. www.oklahoman.com/story/news/s...

Evergreen. Students, faculty, and perhaps even admin are all alike. Alike in actually wanting to learn, alike in poorly reading emails, alike in procrastinating straight through deadlines. Some of them may even be alike in being human.

As part of my attendance survey, I ask a random question. Monday's was "What technology do you hope will be obsolete in 20 years?" And it turns out: students, they're just like us.

This is absolutely incredible: the average temperature over the past six months (October-March) will end up at 52.5°F in #Albuquerque. That's 4°F above the previous record warmest. 🤯 Even after accounting for climate change, the odds of it being THAT warm are 1-in-123,000!! 🤯

I'll just go work in a bar to save the economy.

Am i meant to be working from home to save the economy, or returning to the office to save the economy? Getting a lot of mixed messages these days.
