I started here, travelling from thread to thread---no end of retweetable observations. But it seems cleaner just to share where I started and let you explore on your own. Have fun!

no matter how sure you are that these guys have broken a whole bunch of laws, you aren't nearly as certain as they are

A tough thing in explaining to people why having children is enjoyable is that all the bad stuff is very easy to explain (lost sleep, lost time, more sickness, less sex, etc. etc.) whereas most of the really good stuff whispers.

I am 100% in favor of people who don't want kids not having kids, but watching your kids play on the beach on a day where all your responsibilities are asleep is a peak human experience of a type you will struggle to get elsewhere.

Been seeing this a lot. Blows my mind to think that writers would put in the labor but feel unable to summarize their story or write their own blinking biography. One paragraph! And you think AI knows you better than you know you? Also, how crappy and not-worth-reading are your bios?

This is a nice metaphor for many slices of discourse.

Movies Silently@moviessilently.bsky.social

I was thinking about the response of DW Griffith fans vs Fritz Lang fans to debunking. When I debunk a Griffith first, I get waves of people trying to move the goal posts so they can still claim firsties. I debunked Lang having the first movie dragon and the response was “Cool!”

Most curriculum experts I've met were in the classroom just long enough to claim they had teaching experience. Four or five (or two) years teaching ten or twenty years ago shouldn't be so impressive to people.

Trevor Aleo@mraleosays.bsky.social

This is another thing that bothers me. What are the credentials of these “curricular specialists?” Who are these wizards of structuring & sequencing knowledge? Are they domain experts? Scholars? Curriculum theorists? Or is it just Teach for America grads who taught for 2 years before joining HMH?

Still respects the movement without choosing a new participant to place above the others.

A committee chose Sí Se Puede Park as the new name for the waterfront open space. The City Council is poised to approve the pick next week.

Don't care what nonsense the new season of Sold a Story is peddling, but it's been great at getting smart teacher people reposted into my feed. I don't talk a lot about teaching here but I'm a twenty-year veteran of the classroom and baby I have opinions.

Inside the humanities we’re slowly losing our minds as we shout this til we’re hoarse—of course education in the name of ROI is an ideological project! Of course, treating knowledge as a content strategy results in bullshit! Still bracing to read this eloquent call to close the business schools

Started a VC fund that pays gifted, motivated young people to drop out of kindergarten and start a business. I’m proud to announce that Really BIG Fire Truck That Flies And It Has A Dinosaur is coming out of stealth mode (it also has a stealth mode).

I'm here to testify that you can write something, let it sit for a bit, come back and read it again and have a new idea without the LLM backboard firing it back at you like hitting a tennis ball against the garage. I try not to gainsay the process others use, but this is what is being described.

found this writer online, got my library to order her book, now i get to read it. it really is that easy to support writers and costs nothing

An American leftist citing “the average person <in the world> makes $13k annually” in a discussion about US healthcare is a person engaging in a desperate pivot to keep the conversation focused on billionaires to ignore that from a global perspective literally everyone in the US is rich

Rhiannon Giddens has a new album out, incidentally.

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.
