There's no way to give the anti-trans movement what they want without mostly harming cis people's privacy. But maybe being creepy to little girls was the whole point all along. I am worried even in this likely blue wave that this law could pass because the public is so bad on this issue […]

I'm going to be in the greater LA area yet again starting tomorrow if any mutuals want to meet. This time, I'm more in the Santa Monica area rather than the valley. I'll have more free time on Thursday and some on Tuesday.

This is a good primer on Israel's political situation going into tomorrow's election. But I'd like to go deeper on something he only touches on, which is that part of the reason for Israel's electoral doldrums (and resulting geopolitical chaos) is its broken political system bsky.app/profile/avis...

In about 24 hours, poles will open here in Israel. In what is a strong contender for Israel’s most critical elections. The election pits Netanyahu’s extremely unpopular coalition against a non-coherent, but moderately more liberal, opposition. Here are some thoughts as we head into it.

This is precisely how I feel about homonationalism/pinkwashing too. It's something we have to oppose, for queer reasons, because it specifically harms queer people.

I still see the most urgent issue in US elections as immigration and ICE. But it's also important to end the tormenting of the most vulnerable trans people, especially children. ICE, Palestine and trans rights all work unreasonably well as litmus tests for Dems. We need a blue wave. But cutting […]

mastodon.socialOriginal post on mastodon.social

And to repeat a point I've made many times before - when one of these shitty Dems puts out a transphobic ad, the effects of that are on society as a whole. This isn't a game of chess where when it's over, the pieces are all put away. This isn't meeting voters where they are at but making them […]

A new survey of 1,000 American adults found that the strongest supporters of transgender sports bans are not the people who admire women most: they are the people who hold the most hostile views about women. www.helenwebberley.com/news/transge...

Okay, I do not like Ari Drennen at all, I have to defend her honor since Jesse Singal talked about her like she's on his side. No, she's a dumb liberal but actually on trans issues she's vastly closer to my views than Singal's. She's more about choosing your battles and not painting Dem […]

Or a better analogy because it's closely related would be the women's movement. The debates within feminism weren't really about "how much feminism should we have?" But non-feminists might think that's it. There's a reason why TERFism arose from actually sincere feminists and it has nothing to […]

There is some parallel (I do want to be careful about making analogies between different groups of people) with the self-obsessed way white people tend to understand the civil rights movement. The debates among black activists weren't centered on the question of "moderation" aka white feelings […]

The path of least resistance for your average modern human results in massive violations of their privacy and dangerous security holes. It means they are at the whim of tech companies and various bad actors embedded therein. The state is just some people. Getting legislation passed doesn't mean […]

There's a tendency among people who work within the system of thinking any other approach is unserious, but it's often backwards. By all means, try to get HR to change policy, try to get the center-left party to do the right thing. They work for the system not you, but you can sometimes twist […]

There were undoubtedly a non-zero number of closeted trans children who suddenly became hopeful or even got useful information from those fake pro-trans mailers. I've been saying, a lot of us have been saying really, that this toothpaste isn't going back in the tube, but some on the anti-trans […]

In his world, there is no such thing as updating priors. What the polls once showed got locked in his brain and apparently they can never, ever change, and everyone needs to work around that reality, because reality can never change (even as it has).

G Elliott Morris@gelliottmorris.com

Matthew Yglesias continues to say that talking about ICE and excessive force in immigration enforcement helps Republicans. He is obviously wrong about this and refuses to acknowledge the data. Way past time for everyone to update their priors on this.

JK Rowling is doing a sarcastic, half-assed attempt at damage control, because people who have to lose money because of her bigotry are actually concerned about boycotts. So she says that she doesn't actually want trans people dead. Which is obviously preposterous. She knowingly wants conditions […]

There are all kinds of discussions that can be had about consuming the works of bad people but the question of giving money to Rowling right now isn't that. It's way simpler. The idea that you shouldn't even pirate makes sense, but it's still less bad than watching it through a streaming […]

The story isn't that Graham was gay, since there's nothing wrong with that. The story is that one of the prostitutes he paid was 17 at the time. He is yet another one of the pedocons. The irony goes away when you realize that men who prey on boys love all the opportunities homophobia gives them.

Not an ai apocalypse doomer or whatever, but entering a world where the normal operation of cybersecurity is vast swarms of hacker bots battling vast swarms of defender bots 24/7 at a scale beyond human comprehension doesn't seem like a *great* path forward.

The Social Security Administration is stumping for the current president. Totally healthy, non-failed democracy we have here 🤦‍♀️ #uspol

If you sell proprietary software, the end-user will reverse-engineer it using an automatic reverse-engineering bot but if you move that functionality to the cloud, they will pwn your servers using an automatic script kiddie bot. lmfao

@chris I agree with this. One's responsibility is to fix their own country. There's usually very little that can be done to help other countries directly and fixing your own country's tyranny (especially if you're an influential country such as US, China or Russia) helps other countries quite a bit.

If the goal is to fight fascist tyranny wherever it is - and it damn well should be - then you will be better equipped to fight it where you are than anywhere else. It doesn't seem like that's your goal if you just try to act better than people in other countries that ostensibly have a bigger […]

But to answer the question Europeans are asking - here in the US we have a strong executive directly elected president. Every country that has this system has this problem. Even worse, we have an insurmountable 2/3rds requirement for removal in the senate, a body tied to state, not population […]
