In a new innovation on right turn on red, this morning I witnessed a driver pull around the right of the first car stopped at a red light and then just drive through the red light. We might need to screen people for their emotional preparedness to manage the stress of driving.

I also realize I was slightly unclear. The driver went *straight* through the light, not right. I also forgot to mention that it was at a narrowed intersection so they had to drive on the curb to pull off this maneuver.

Creeping Bellflower is making a weird autumn resurgence all over South Minneapolis. I've even seen it in bloom a few places. Great reminder to tell your friends to dig it up.

There's a common thread between this and casual, daily violations of driving rules, which seems to signal some tearing at a fundamental assumption underlying society: that we all owe each other the respect and decency to follow a minimal set of legal obligations.

Maybe we should have fewer rules. Maybe enforcing all the rules invites a nanny state. But let's tick some basic boxes: 1. Vaccinate yourself and your animals against deadly, easily preventable diseases 2. Don't run red lights while driving your car 3. Leave your guns locked up at home etc

And the comment section discussing how to use AI to fake a rabies certificate, and how there haven't been outbreaks of rabies in decades... 🙄 Why are people like this?

There's a school on my very residential block. It has a marked, sign-posted crossing out front. Yet drivers don't stop for kids, so other kids with flags stand out to stop cars. If you invoke some sociological imagination, step back from your lived experience, and look at that it seems crazy.

The signs say there's a crossing, the speed limit is 20mph, it's in front of a school. But drivers still don't stop. The problem isn't the signs. The problem isn't the kids with flags. The problems are a built environment structually unsafe for children & a culture that treats that as acceptable.

This empirically makes limited sense to me. We won. We did the largest general strike in America decades. ICE/DHS pulled out and didn't repeat the same kind of violent escalations they tried in Minneapolis. That wouldn't have happened without mass protest. Again, we won.

Maybe to exactly invert the argument: if protestors came out and all that happened was ICE agents politely took some criminals into custody that would have been embarrassing for liberals. But instead DHS murdered multiple people, teargassed schools, and dragged innocent people through snow.

The protests tested the admin: was Trump just signaling that he wanted a secret police force to do crimes with impunity, or did he mean it. The only way to find out was to force the issue. He meant it. And turns out the bulk of the public doesn't care for living in a repressive police state.

You could argue that was the end of a sort of tit-for-tat that protestors shouldn't have tried at all. It's hard to say what would have happened. But - as with many social issues - if you can force the other side to do things that are egregiously immoral and win over the crowd, you tend to win.

There's no statute of limitations on murder. Jonathan Ross murdered Renee Good in cold blood, in broad daylight, on film. He will die in prison, eventually.

CAUGHT ON TAPE: Republican Ron Schutz thinks it's "so offensive" to prosecute the ICE officer that killed Renee Good.

I always wonder if people who drive like this up to red lights are aware that the white line is supposed to be in front of their car, or if they're just intentionally blocking crosswalks.

I'm increasingly of the view we should just collectively agree that Donald Trump is not in fact President. He was not qualified to be elected. And he does not appear to currently display the cognitive capacity to govern. We have no President. It's fine. We can do without.

A 56-year-old Mexican man held at a federal immigration facility in Laredo was found dead in his cell Saturday morning. His family says the center would not give him medicine for diabetes, high blood pressure and a heart condition. He is the 7th person to die in ICE custody in Texas this year.

Part of De-Trumpification must be to (1) charge everyone involved in these unauthorized pet projects with conspiracy to defraud the United States, and (2) prevent them from owning or operating public companies, or having any financial relationship with the federal government ever again.

As inflation hits a 4-month high and the Iran war keeps driving up gas prices, Trump unveils his big plan with the midterms two weeks away: a "World Class Championship Golf Course" in D.C. Work starts Nov. 15, closing a public course for about 15 months, he says.

Trump breaks the law every day but he can't actually *do* most of those crimes without the willful conspiracy of private actors and other government officials. They all deserve prison sentences and permanent ostracization. Any purge short of that by the next admin/Congrss should be seen as failure.

Sounds like a pretty clearly unconstitutional search. Can't wait for the Alito opinion justifying this "because immigrants bad" or similar.

I'd zoom out and say that Trump II is the culmination of a gradual then accelerating breakdown of the constitutional order that started on December 12, 2000. Widespread xenophobia, absurd assertions of executive power, withering of Congress, radicalization of SCOTUS started as Bush-era projects.

We didn't have to end up here, of course. But here we are. Trump has done considerable specific damage but I don't think you have that kind of damage without a radical right-wing legal and political project that started ~30 years ago.

When immigration agents struck a man with an SUV in Houston over the weekend, they said they were chasing an undocumented Mexican man facing deportation and multiple criminal charges. But the photo they shared of their target was of a man whose family says he died almost a decade ago.

When you go look at the locations, you can see why kids would have been using the road there (a school? a park? their home?). Those details matter for how audiences understand a crash. "Driver kills child in front of 'Watch for Children' sign" is very different from "Kid on e-scooter hit by car"

A problem with coverage of drivers killing kids is that the stories are almost never contextualized with the actual setting. Headlines "Driver kills kid" (or, worse, "Kid hit by car") leave out that these crashes usually happen on residential streets, where we should always expect kids to play.

This is a really good point about urban design. I'm not going to go somewhere that I can't sit down. And I'm definitely not taking my kids there. Seating is critical!

This historic event marks the first time the general public has been allowed to sit down on the Nicollet Mall since 2015. Naturally these new "benches" are designed so that homeless people can't sleep there, they also look temporary. This is what this exact section looked like in 2005:
