“Don’t trust any numbers between 0 and 95%” implies we should only trust the numbers between 95 and 100% which is probably less reassuring that they intended.

New Scientist@newscientist.com

Commentators say the probability of machines wiping us out ranges from 0 to over 95 per cent. Columnist Jacob Aron explains why you shouldn't trust any of those numbers

“We don’t know what it does but it’s PERFECTLY SAFE” something something paperclips something

*It's nice of him to tactfully point out that their AI gene-hacking scheme still lacks the potential to wipe out all human life

YOU DON'T "CONSUME" ART MOTHERFUCKER. YOU EXPERIENCE IT. YOU FEEL IT. YOU ENGAGE WITH IT. YOU WRESTLE WITH IT. YOU LIVE IT. ART ISN'T A LITTLE MORSEL YOU GOBBLE UP.

For all the “craft IPA is over” people, I am sat here drinking an exclusive taproom only IPA in the sun next to a hyperlocal microbrewery in a repurposed boathouse 5 mins walk from where I live and it’s GLORIOUS. Live the dream.

I am fairly sure there are white male academics with dubious or unverifiable CVs but we will never know as for some reason they (we?) are not relentlessly investigated by our fearless investigative journalists.

No, she's right. The Verge makes it sound like Schneider was knocking Bluesky users for being in a liberal bubble, but that was all the interviewer's phrasing. What Schneider says he wants to change is the perception that it's all politics here, by attracting more sports fans and other communities.

Absolutely crazed. Apart from the knee jerk xenophobia it’s like someone in 1900 getting snippy about the Napoleonic wars.

This is profoundly upsetting

PSA if you don’t have kids, aren’t involved in education, or otherwise aren’t familiar with how UK school years work, year 10 are 14-15 year olds.

It is c 5000 CE. Christopher Nolan has released a 3 hour film based on the ancient epic One Piece. Make Earth Great Again influencers are refusing to watch it because of diverse casting. Elon Musk, now a brain in a jar, says he will release a historically accurate version any time soon.

oh yeah no yeah “Sizewell is not a risk, a concern, currently at this stage,” he said. “From the meetings we’ve had at the moment, that hasn’t been a concern.”

Doug Clow@dougclow.bsky.social

My “no risk to the nuclear power station from the nearby wildfires” statement has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my statement.

All of this is fixable except the last which will take a generational effort. The contrasting situation in Germany is at least partly due to the destruction of the Junkers as a political class after WW1. 8/

Maybe we'll have to get our arses kicked in a major conflict before it gets better here. Let's hope not though eh. In the meantime, death to the Norman oppressor. 9/

There is already a danger that creative inds are only for the children of the rich. The ending of creative BTECs and UAL courses (which are really good at inculcating the kind of autonomous working that employers say they value) in favour of "get yer spanners out" T Levels is not going to help. 6/

4) Most of all, successive governments have talked about bringing vocational and academic subjects to an equal footing, and none of them have succeeded, mostly due to an absurd class system that dates back to 1066 and venerates the pursuits of the leisured classes while looking down on "trade". 7/

where yes they were often successful at working in the industry. But that doesn't count for the funding model. Likewise it assumes that someone who goes to college in another part of the country won't move to take up a media job, and if they do, it also somehow doesn't count. 4/

3) In general creative subjects also do badly because they are seen as less "real". Our performing arts had to close eventually (not really due to the LSIP model tbh, Covid pretty much did us in) but you try closing the theatre or recording studios in Eton. The parents would be up in arms. 5/

2) This model works OK for e.g. construction but serves creative industries quite poorly. Our funding is partly tied to LSIPs (Local skills improvement plans) drawn up with local employers. The problem is that jobs are not always local. We are quite well served to do media for example, 2/

because Pinewood is literally a few miles down the road, but if you believe local data there is no demand for performing arts graduates. But this neglects that we are at the end of the Metropolitan line. When we had a Perf Arts department our grads would go off to try their luck in London 3/

I mean, I'm glad they're *finally* saying this stuff on the BBC. But either the likes of Robinson have only just realised this. Or they've been pulling their punches. Either should be a sackable offence for a high-profile political journalist.

Our org is doing an AI self assessment thing about “how well do you understand AI/how often do you use it etc” and there is no option for “I feel I understand it pretty well and hate everything about it”
