Spaces of Urban Platformisation⁣ investigates how financialisation and platform capitalism shape urban everyday life. It looks at the speculative operations around Airbnb and coworking in Berlin. The book has been out since May ’26, but it is never too late to promote it a little bit.

It was surreal to be on @cnnipr.bsky.social last night talking about the surging politics of housing in Europe. The main point being that when people's most basic needs are not met, governments will pay the price. The solution being: decommodify housing.

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

Saul Staniforth@saulstaniforth.bsky.social

Ash Sarkar: "The one thing the govt could do to improve the lives of young people is introduce some rent controls" Govt minister Jonathan Reynolds: "No economist supports rent controls" There you have it. Are you a young person trapped paying exorbitant rent? The Labour govt says f**k you.

KCL made a little video of me talking about my research on venture capital + housing:

It's WeWork 2.0, but for your home 🏡 New research from @timwhite100.bsky.social shows how the silicon valley hyperscale playbook is now being applied to housing, with tenants paying the price... Watch our latest research video 👇 Read the full paper: onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....

A beautiful thing in academia is the chance to meet and learn from smart people across disciplines, and let conversations simmer, allowing ideas to emerge and take shape. This was a great piece to write with a great team. Thanks to @ctwittekind.bsky.social and Elizabeth Resor for leading the charge!

A company which began as a book seller became a company which destroys books. Capitalism really is eating itself

404 Media@404media.co

SCOOP: 404 Media placed a tracking device in a shipment of rare books to see which AI company was buying it. What did we find? It ended up at an Amazon facility where Amazon scans and destroys books. Yes. This is literally the logo outside the Amazon warehouse door. Read now:

A major loss. Michael was tireless, intellectually curious, full of energy, with a huge drive to educate. He was generous with time and ideas; always full of questions. He was especially kind to junior colleagues, and unfailingly supportive of other people’s projects. May his memory be a blessing.

Joe Sarling@joesarling.bsky.social

Really sad to hear of the passing of Prof Michael Edwards. He was a tireless advocate of a planning system that works for all. He was always incredibly generous with his time and knowledge and was an early adopter of social media to promote practice. Thoughts are with friends and family 🙏🏻

New report + tool, making the case for municipal and community-led development

Ever wondered what municipal or community-led development could look like in your area? 🏗️ Today we launch a free, practical tool to help councils & communities explore the possibilities and keep more value in the places we call home. 🧰 🔗 www.cles.org.uk/rethinking-property-led-regeneration

Fascinating article on the political economy of outer space, situating the dominance of SpaceX today within a long history of deregulating and commercialising the skies:

We now know a bit about what happens when the likes of private equity firms and REITs enter housing markets. But what about venture capitalists?  My recent paper ‘Hyperscaling housing’ has been published in the latest volume of IJURR (spoiler: it's not pretty):

My new article with @mihjournal.bsky.social is at long last in orbit. It explores how the neoliberal fantasy machine has used space colonisation to wish away the problem of environmental limits and revive the legitimation of private property.

Great paper! Worth a read

Tim White@timwhite100.bsky.social

New paper in @bjsociology.bsky.social: ‘Privileged Precarity’. It explores how middle class young professionals leverage housing insecurity to synchronise their lives with the rhythms of precarious labour markets. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

"It takes a certain kind of mind to look into the world of colostomy bags, incontinence pads and emollient cream and see dollar signs" Brilliant, visceral piece on private equity + care homes from what is sure to be a banger of a book by @hettieobrien.bsky.social
