YES. YES. YES. LISTEN TO DAVID PEOPLE. THE LAST THING WE SHOULD BE DOING IS CUTTING TAXES. I AM GOING CRAZY HERE.

David Sligar@davidsligar.bsky.social

income tax is a collective endeavour among workers to substitute wages for a mix of wages and socialised services and benefits, funded via collective pooling. just taxing the billionaires will not raise enough to accomplish this, no matter how cool it sounds as a left populist talking point, sorry

Yep. I'm sure Australia's famously responsible media class will behave very normally in the coming days.

Kevin Bonham@kevinbonham.bsky.social

Brendan Nugent named as suspect in vehicle attack on Helen Haines. He is entitled to the presumption of innocence. An account belonging to a person by that name on twitter has been widely identified by posters there in connection to images of the alleged vehicle.

@jesseblack.bsky.social was so upset about hearing about Australian politics for two weeks, that I decided to tell him about the time Australia killed 500 million rabbits to cheer him up

deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social@deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social

Episode 45 is now live! Liam tells Jesse about the unique nature of Australian ecology, tells the story of the rabbits and the subsequent rabbit genocide and asks the question: is there anything we can do about all these foxes? Bibliograph 1/3 podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/e...

Thanks to the very strange person who left their pills on the ground outside my apartment door, leading to my himbo dog being hospitalised

I've promised @jesseblack.bsky.social we'll talk about something less upsetting than auspol next time, like the mass killing of adorable animals.

deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social@deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social

Episode 44 is live. We're talking about Australian politics (sorry!) This is the second in a two parter, covering 1943-2026. We talk about the founding of the Liberal Party, One Nation (x2) and ask the question are we in the next sequence of the Australian Liberalpede? Same bibliography as Ep 43

I said hey Josh want to Hear about the time an evil Australian corporation killed an entire town of First Nation’s people. He said “sure”. Truly the man’s one of a kind!!!!

Right now, the PA/Fatah supports a 2SS. Hamas (sort of) supports a 2SS. The Arab League supports a 2SS. The State of Israel unequivocally and very explicitly does not! If you think a 2SS is the best path forward, you need to be focused on bringing Israel in line with the international consensus.

find yourself a podcast co-host like @jesseblack.bsky.social who'll hear you talk about ball-sweat colanders and Great Circumcision Crazes and still come back week after week

deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social@deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social

Episode 42 is now live. Same bibliography from last time, but here's a picture from the wonderful Mountjoy Paper about anti-masturbation devices I focussed on the ones made for humans (fellas mainly), but there were quite a few for horses as well

You think you know pain? My kids currently watching a french-anime series about magical princesses that somehow went for three seasons. That’s pain.

I get that this is a common belief of a lot of china hawks but why would the CCP risk a destabilising war with Taiwan where an awful lot of people would die when they can just maintain the status quo indefinitely? www.thesaturdaypaper.com.au/share/8cd14b...

thesaturdaypaper.com.auWhat would happen in a China–Taiwan warThere is today only one question that matters for Taiwan’s security: will the United States defend the island if it comes under attack from China?

One of my favorite cases of someone being Wrong on the Internet was a very earnest, very confused vegan who was telling people how cruel honey is; and it eventually turned out they thought honey was made by putting bees in a centrifuge and spinning them around until they threw up.

I genuinely feel bad for her, that could be us folks. there but for the grace of god go all poasters

Guardian US@us.theguardian.com

Can social media be addictive? @taylorlorenz.bsky.social says no. “You wanting to communicate and chat with your friends every day is not an addiction,” says Lorenz. “And to frame it that way is incredibly harmful and anti-science.”

That's obviously not me saying ever concentrating power in the hands of smaller number of corporations is great, but someone think of the petit bourgeois is such a funny take

to say nothing of the fact that so many of our laws actually *advantage* small business. Half the reason regulators go after major corporates is because they can get the funding to do so, its not because big corporates are more likely to break the law (the opposite is probably true)

Now I tend to think there are a small number of people who do need to be confined somewhere (probably not a prison) for the primary reason of stopping them from hurting others, probably in line with the Scandinavian model but with more emphasis on a therapeutic approach

Most days I don’t mind being a single dad but every once in a while it would be nice to have someone to reassure me I’m not completely insane, you know?

In a similar way Australian society tries to mythologise WWI veterans and I’ll always remember a lad in my class (now famous) getting a weeks detention for changing the section of his school issued diary “for those who paid the supreme sacrifice” to “for those who paid for the supreme pizza”

always mystified by the suggestion that Gen Z and younger were the ones who disrespectfully turned 9/11 into a meme. i was at a school in NJ where classmates lost parents, didn't know if my own dad was okay, you could see Ground Zero from a nearby hill, and the lads were cracking jokes by lunchtime

Episode 38 is the second in our two-parter on the history of blackface, minstrelsy and racist performance in Australia. I wouldn't say it's good....but it's... interesting?

deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social@deadbunyipsociety.bsky.social

Episode 38 is now live! The bibliography is the same as last time, I really should repost it...but it's more effort than you think! podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/e...

There are two positions in Australian public policy: 1. Australia's debt is out of control and should be reined in through cutting spending and 2. Australia's debt is fine. To never be spoken: we should tax more. My kingdom for a leftist that wants to raise taxes www.afr.com/politics/fed...

afr.comTreasurer Jim Chalmers says debt would be even worse if the other mob was still inWithout self-imposed discipline, the red numbers will continue, especially as Labor continues to seek and spend money it does not have. And boasting about it.

I will confess I am anti AI, sceptical but realistic. But I had a boring spreadsheet job that would have taken me nine hours of tedious data entry that a colleague did in fifteen minutes. Still hate the idea of people generating text but not much I can do about that

ghost malone ergo propter bones@proptermalone.bsky.social

i think there's a kernel of truth that the benefits of LLMs have mostly accrued to spreadsheet people because spreadsheet people are the most likely early adopters of agentic LLMs

I find this talking point so strange, because it just doesn't at all reflect any data I have ever seen? There are for-profit providers in the NDIS, sure, and you can critique that on an ideological basis. But there are almost no highly profitable businesses and a lot of NFPs

Greg Jericho@grogsgamut.bsky.social

Is a system designed to encourage ticket clippers and fat profit margins "fraud"? Yes, but that is not what the govt talk about when it talks about fraud.

View full thread

why then is the NDIS costing so much money? Well it's not really about profits (most providers I have spoken to run at a loss), it's because there are more participants, receiving more support than was ever assumed

That wielding political power feels fucking awesome. And if you’ve never had a taste or if you’re the kind of person to whom the notion doesn’t appeal, you will struggle to understand why politicians behave the way they do

Riley Bruce@rileybruce.bsky.social

What’s a thing from your area of expertise (or special interest) that you think it would behoove everyone else to know?

Elden Ring. Couldn't get passed the first dude. Happy for you though/ sorry it happened for more successful people

Ian Boudreau@ianboudreau.com

Marvel's Midnight Suns. My strategy/tactics friends absolutely loved it. I couldn't deal with the narrative dollhouse layer between missions

I’m glad that there’s been more coverage of this, but I must also point out that we - the actual Lebanese - have been saying that Israel’s goal is to make south Lebanon unliveable for nearly 2 years. I said this myself multiple times. We are simply not believed *because* we are Lebanese.

Benjamin Braun@benbraun.social

"FT has found evidence of controlled detonations and demolitions by Israeli forces and civilian contractors in dozens of border communities." Most of the destruction happened *after* the April ceasefire when territory was already under Israeli control (dark red dots). www.ft.com/content/25bc...
