The other thing about this situation is even if it didn’t have a good explanation — sometimes in our relationships or our lives we fuck up and don’t support our partner as much as we should but weird public harassment campaigns where you’re telling the person to kill themselves isn’t fixing that
great piece. man social media is a cancer themomoftheyear.substack.com/p/im-the-mom...
I also don’t think they’re messing with these numbers but the amount of lies and conspiracies they flood the info environment with makes everything they do look suspicious. Most people don’t understand how federal data works. They just know they can’t trust this administration.
Also, if you think the administration is fiddling with the numbers, realize the facts just don't fit that pattern. Why have an unusually bad month last month, and an unusually good one this month? That looks more like statistical noise than a conspiracy.
This was the reason for 95% of dumb covid discourse
Ya i mean there's a reason that I said "if they never existed" and not "you, the person reading this, are a bad person if you are using an ad-blocker" but a lot of people read it as the second because they suspect deep down that they are just making a selfish decision and get defensive
Yep. It’s leftists influenced by libertarianism. Libertarians have warned about an emergency like Covid where bigger government leads to authoritarianism and when that didn’t happen and instead it was *libertarian* ideas that killed people they were forced to create an alternate reality.
COVID was a moment where the liberal consensus about both expert institutions and shared personal responsibility were proven to be incredibly important and it has driven both conservatives and a certain kind of leftist completely insane because it invalidated their worldview
The other giant hole in this argument is that Dems are responding to their voters on social issues. Yglesias continues to elide that Dem voters have gotten more liberal and that as *Dem* politicians they can’t just ignore that because you want them to
Let's assume for the sake of argument that political elites cannot affect public opinion, only pander to it. Even then, you must anticipate trends in public opinion. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to anticipate that an internal masked authoritarian police force will soon become unpopular.

Our Director and US Principal Economist argue in an essay for @mainstreamlabour.bsky.social that the solution to Britain’s compounding crises is the Productive State — that owns, invests and provides essentials to make life affordable. www.mainstreamlabour.org/updates/new-...
It’s usually not explicitly acknowledged but they tend to gloss over this by suggesting that left-liberal voters will have to suck it up in order to win. But they have no answer when it causes an uproar amongst progressive normie voters and then try to pin blame for that on online progressives
I can’t get over how there were days of discourse on there about whether women should have voting rights. Prominent folks had entire threads devoted to it. And while they used them to push back—if you don’t spend your time surrounded by nazis there’s no need to debate such nonsense
IMO this sort of bizarre reporting is downstream of the fact that so many people at the New York Times remain absolutely obsessed with X, the Nazi propaganda app
To be a successful coach requires acknowledging when you are wrong and Albernaz handled the Sammy situation poorly and should admit as much. It comes across as hypocritical when you see multiple other young players doing similar things not being held accountable. www.nytimes.com/athletic/737...

genuinely inspiring.
"We think that building housing is part of the solution. We think net zero is part of the solution. We think a car-light development is part of the solution. We think building a sense of place and community is part of the solution." -- leader of the Squamish nation www.nytimes.com/2026/06/15/o...
This x100000. I’ve also seen many centrist pundits say that advocating for better pay for workers is bad for the same reason.
The dirty secret of modern progressive politics is that the abandoned viewpoint of “workers should be paid generously for their labor” is the true progressive position, while “affordability” is a slopulist slogan that promises more consumer consumption to the most consumerist society in history
Not Talarico but I’m home in very conservative NEPA this weekend. I’ve seen multiple signs for Democratic candidates and zero for Republicans. I can’t stress enough how out of character that is. There’s unsurprisingly but clearly a massive enthusiasm gap emerging.
just a single data point but I was in Fort Worth for work last week and strolled for a couple miles through a residential Trump +6 precinct. I saw over a dozen Talarico signs and not a single sign for any Republican candidate
I’m in an Orioles group on Facebook and the most common type of post after poor pitching is a very specific kind of guy asking why they won’t just sign Trevor Bauer. This has been going on for years and it will continue long past he dies. It’s It's our atonement, you see; it's our punishment.
A Trevor Bauer Long Island Ducks shirt is one of the most cursed items I have ever come across in the world
I keep making this point but if you look at the 2022 inflation from a historical lens it very clearly was a blip and transitory according to any definition of the word — the problem is when folks are living through it for some reason they think transitory means over in 6 hours.
I think people misunderstand that the point of public development is to support something the private sector is neglecting on its own but public development as an end goal in and of itself doesn’t make sense
There is nothing ontologically good or evil about public homebuilding as opposed to private homebuilding. The state sets the rules of the market, and the market shapes the conditions under which public building takes place. It's all part of the same overarching system.
Twitter spent all day arguing it’s a bad thing. The reasoning as I understand it is because it happened during Biden’s administration and then Harris lost the 2024 election that she lost because voters hated real wage gains. Now where that idea came from is beyond me..

In the supply-shock era, we should revisit a lost industrial policy tool: public factories. 🏭In a new paper, Ganesh Sitaraman & I explore the history & future of US public factories. ⚡️In another paper, I propose public factories for critical energy components www.vanderbilt.edu/vanderbilt-p... 🧵
Hell there was an episode of the Office in 2007 where Michael panics about ageism because Ryan wants to modernize the companies processes — specially using new tech and an updated website. Actually the whole point of that episode is still useful for pro and anti AI fanatics..
