my favorite Conor Friedersdorf moment was when he took something Elisa Gabbert wrote, rewrote it (but much longer and, also, quite badly), and I wrote a joke-blog about it pointing it out, and he (probably from Googling himself) found it and commented the equivalent of "nuh-uh!!!"

How are you still writing this shit www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/...

second-most* wonderful benefit of having regular readers of your drafts is when you get the feedback that you can go a little further in some part, it shows both honest engagement and trust in your own skill. always wonderful to get. *readers not running away and screaming is the most wonderful

my dermatologist has some weird name that includes “cancer center” which is boring to know EXCEPT the AI that summarizes my voicemails into preview text just informed me “Bruno Mars getting cancer forwarded your prescription to CVS”

poem that’s an alphabet banner from a pre-k classroom but it’s for language lovers and starts with things like “arugula” and “botched” and “Cheshire” and ends with stuff like “yeoman” and “zephyr”

“What if we made a children’s tale for adults” but what if you made a good, new movie

EBENEZER starring Johnny Depp has been rated PG-13 for "Frightening material." Director Ti West stated that he aimed to make a "spookier version" of the classic Charles Dickens tale "than ever before." In theaters November 13.

my cat has figured out if she screams in my room when it’s dark out I will kick her out but if she screams outside my room while it’s dark out I will make sure she’s ok at which point I’m already up so I might as well feed and pet her 😪

happy #weirdpoemwednesday! ➰ feel free to share weird poems you wrote or ones you love by other poets :) here’s the opening poem of Tytti Heikkinen’s chapbook The World Undressed (After Hours Editions), brilliantly translated by @niina.bsky.social 🔗⬇️

learned the term "occult malignancy" while editing at the job today--a metastatic cancer where cancer cells are found in the body but normal tests can't find where they originated

inside of press owners there are two editors: one just trying to do the work, and a smaller, mostly ignored one that consistently whispers TWENTY DOLLAR SUBMISSION FEE

an odd thing that has increased recently is the number of people asking me to do all sorts of writer/editor-related work for them, but for free, and also I have no idea who they are

i love writing. i love how you can say something like 'grief is a clawfoot bathtub full of rubber ducks' and then you can write about laying down in it, about the sad chorus that leaks from you just existing in a certain, specific way.

yesterday my kid asked me to tell him the story of the pizza that turned into the girl and honestly it was a lovely way to talk about finding your person/educate him on lactose intolerance

an unforeseen drawback of being a loquacious creative who is also a parent is your young kids will ask you things like “tell me about that time you were a kid and had a chicken for a door”

it's always "impress and editor with these cover letter tips" and never "impress an editor by singing the entirety of 'Part of That World' in a guttural Johnny Cash basso profundo after doing a keg stand in an Arby's parking lot"

an unforeseen drawback of being a loquacious creative who is also a parent is your young kids will ask you things like “tell me about that time you were a kid and had a chicken for a door”

obviously I made up a story about my pet chicken Ducky who could swim because she was born in an aquarium but then she got hit by an eighteen wheeler and was flattened all beetlejuice style into the shape of a door right when we needed a new door, thus my childhood doorbell was a lot of sad clucking

I love classical music but so much of opera sounds like “I am but a wee orchid taking an overcrowded southbound 4 train during rush hour to my job at the cheese rind factory” to me

poems used to be like "Fall's big boot / stubs out flowers / as oaks catch fire" but now they're like "at the season theme park where i work as Fall Incarnate i chase down coworkers in flower costumes and beat them" and the first line is like "with a piece of foam / shaped like a French baguette"

"the focus of poems is language" - someone with a publishing contract, smart, hot "what if someone dressed in rust and loam beat someone with a fake baguette" - me, no publishing contract, tired, wants bread

FYI signups are going live soon for my workshop: "So Your Poetry Manuscript Is The Exact Length You Want It But Submission Guidelines Need Ten More Pages: How to Write Poems That Enjamb Across Page Breaks"

this is the first workshop of my collective tentatively titled "poetry books are too long now as a result of shifting printing practices and this is a personal insult to me, an easily distracted poet"
