My mom thought I was her mom tonight. She doesn’t always recognize me anymore, which has been my biggest fear for a long time. However, I do think there’s something sweet about her thinking I’m my grandma. I never met her, she died when my mom was 13, but my mom always used to draw her and write

i know everything's been said but, if nothing else, i hope Dolly Parton has taught a lesson that people from the American south or really any part of the world are not all any one thing-- when tragedy strikes the southern US i see so many ppl scoff and go "serves them right for how they vote"

So many people don’t understand how horrific and grotesque dementia is because we assume it just happens to old people and that it’s normal for old people to develop it. But it really is a living horror movie everyday.

She hasn’t yet forgotten me like my Nana did, but I can tell I’m more of a figure to her than a person with shared history and love. Still i know the worse is yet to come.

People don’t realize that dementia is 100% fatal. You forget more and more until you forget how to talk, you forget how to eat, you sit in s chair, moaning without thought and you slowly die to starvation or suffocation or something horrible like that. That’s still ahead of us and I’m terrified

When my Nana had dementia and I took care of her in my late teens, it genuinely felt like she had died and her corpse remained animated, possessed by something that hated me and wanted me out of her/my house at any cost.

My mom has reached that stage where she feels dead to me. Its so hard to envision the woman who helped raise me. But while she’s angry often, this time the possession is something sadder. She’s always lonely and crying and sad and confused. It’s horrible.
