I posted about this a couple days ago as well because big accounts were starting to spread the idea that it was censorship for a film distributor to pull a movie that was actively hurting the theaters that it depends on to show it's films. Too many post without having knowledge on the subject.

The studio removed it from theaters because the theaters that choose to pick it up were bleeding money. Changing the theatrical window like this is something you never see. There was no conspiracy: none of us paid to see this movie and theaters owners/staff should not suffer the consequences.

All the AI and they still have someone swinging a medieval longsword. Bronze age swords, even the long ones, were wielded 1 handed with significantly shorter grip. And the overhead chop is simple not how you'd use a sword in this era.

It's funny how the Defenders of Western Civilization really want Odysseus to be this heroic patriarchal figure when he is canonically kind of a dirtbag.

Courier delivery bots are the actual burrito taxis

astra of many handles@astra.photography

no, it's not a burrito taxi. there are three different burrito orders in one vehicle, you see, so actually it's more like a burrito bus. transit needs to work for everyone, including food items.

Bleecker Street was sold to Outerlight Entertainment, which is largely owned by long time Democratic donorr Pierre Omidyar. Musk did poorly it's in initial 4 screen limited release, and then was a financial disaster for any theater carried it in it's 2nd weekend.

It doesn't even take a deep understanding of movie theater box office data to see, if you look, that Musk was a financial disaster. Not compared to big releases, not compared to fiction. Compared to documentaries.

Emily Bell@emilybell.bsky.social

Any @alexgibneyfilm.bsky.social film is very well worth seeing in my experience - and this one especially so - it’s on in NYC at the Angelika and other indie cinemas …not yet shut down by the tech industrial censorship complex (or whatever they call themselves)

Musk was dropped by these theaters because it was a complete box office flop. Theaters made $666 on average over last weekend, barely being Practical Magic 2 in its 6th week. For comparison, You Can See Everything and Street fighter made $18,247/$8,608. People didn't show up, these theaters lost $

Marketing automation was a mistake

it's cool that you can send "STOP" to instantly block an automated political fundraising text message so they have to text you from a different number five minutes later

And like it or not, this exactly what the new wave of progressives who claim to be campaigning differently are doing as well, even when they claim they aren't.

Jake Grumbach@jakemgrumbach.bsky.social

We found that as of right now 73% of your campaign donation goes back to the consultants and vendors (!!!), four times more than just 20 years ago. Only 13% to ads. Even I was shocked.

BoxOfficePro is projecting YCSE to match or increase it's opening weekend in weekend 2: $15M-$20M. I think that is soft and it will easily pass $20M. Standing behind the $100M prediction

Toneloaf@toneloaf.bsky.social

Weekend projection for You Can See Everything & it is the 2nd hightest opening weekend for a documentary. At $15 million & a per-theater average of $17,544, a massive box office success. Expect incredible legs on this thing. My take: I project over $100 million & passing Fahrenheit 9/11

I find the "regardless of intent" part perhaps the most frustrating. 1. It implies Trump's intent was something other than using an anti-semitic slur to describe someone being incredibly greedy 2. Who gives a shit what the intent is when someone is saying a slur into a microphone

Joel S.@joelhs.bsky.social

If Zohran Mamdani or Abdul El-Sayed had used the word “Shylock” as an insult, the ADL would be attacking them by name relentlessly. But Donald Trump used it, so we get a generic condemnation of the word without any specific reference to who actually used it, and with no assumption of intent.

You Can See Everything showtimes across Chicago are basically all sold out in the evenings throughout the week. Doubling down on my $100+ million projection

VC investment success rate is about 1/10 and they need most of the other 9 to fail upwards to sell off the investment. You don't have that failure rate and earnestly believe in the companies.

one of the things about VCs is that they actually sort of mostly know you're full of shit, they're testing to see if YOU know you're full of shit. Like they want to know if you are committed enough to the bullshit you're offering that you will absolutely kill yourself to try to make it happen

Box office geek/Theater insider: it is having an incredible run this weekend with little precedent. Large, limited release. 855 theaters; wide releases typically 2500-4000. It is grossing ~double per screen as Street Fighter, which is doing pretty well. This is insane for a 3 hour documentary.

Ultimate, the main point is this: Go see You Can See Everything as soon as you can because it is going to be one of the most best films of the year, if not of all time. Don't believe me? Ask anyone who has seen it.

Michael De Luca is the executive that greenlit Digger, Sinners, OBAO, & Weapons. He has already been pushed out because of the merger. So the new Paramount/WB was never going to continue in the footsteps of Digger no matter how it did.

This is the first Sunday showing at 3 different Chicago chain theaters for You Can See Everything: 12pm, 10:45am, 10:30am. You probably won't be surprised to hear this is never the busiest time on Sundays. I could add even more locations, they all look the same. See this movie, you won't regret it

The only movie that fits with You Can See Everything's box is the highest grossing documentary of all time: Fahrenheit 9/11. The reason I still think You Can See Everything is unprecedented is it is 1 hour longer. It cannot be stressed enough how hard it is to get people to a 3 hour documentary

Another difference, which should have a big impact on the weeks ahead, is the reception this movie is getting. Letterboxd: 4.8 Rotten Tomatoes: 99% Compared to Fahrenheit 9/11's 3.6/82%

These are the top 4 domestic box office grossing movies for Friday(Thursday previews included). Sense & Sensibility and Whalefall aren't doing well, but they aren't doing poorly. No holdover from last week is close to You Can See Everything(Verity, Other Mommy) This is a statistical anomaly

You may think this is hyperbole; it absolutely is not. Melanie was released this year. It had a large budget, was promoted a fair amount, and, well, is about the first lady. It was described as doing really well for a documentary. It isn't even close to You Can See Everything.

It made $5.5M between Thursday previews and Friday. That is on par with Primetime, a small wide release that did well. In Chicagoland, I would bet my life it will do significantly more on Saturday. More showtimes and they are almost all sold out. No documentary, forget length, does this.

Fair except the fact that courier bots perform poorly, are not ADA compliant, do not pay to use the sidewalks where they park between orders, and have caused property damage on multiple occasions by running into glass. And the companies are all pulling back because they haven't been profitable

“I don’t want AI to replace artists and writers” is a humanist sentiment but “I don’t want robots to replace delivery drivers” just comes across as regressive to me.

We spends how many millions on police and what good do they do? One car driving around doing this, for how long without a single cop showing up? And the article doesn't even question where the police were and why they don't actively respond to these break in sprees.

A Northwest Side burglary spree is "crushing" for small businesses trying to stay afloat. A group of men drove a stolen Kia across the Northwest Side Wednesday morning, where they targeted at least 23 businesses, police and business owners said. buff.ly/mgYRQhl

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

and the post below offers a smart wrinkle to people being tired of getting fed 'what they want' ... because revealed preferences don't always match the real ones! bsky.app/profile/tone...

Toneloaf@toneloaf.bsky.social

I don't actually dispute this but I think in a world run by algorithms, "revealed preferences" don't tell us as much about people's actual preferences as the idea implies.

While I think the anti-AI critique is much stronger if you have personal experience with their capabilities, you have to at least learn from people who do know their current abilities & utility. How can you have expertise on the harms if you don't know the capabilities?

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

More generally, "you don't use it so you don't have standing to critique it" is a move to construct expertise narrowly and erase the expertise of people best qualified to expose the harms. >>

This is one potential future I've been worried was going to happen and I think the capabilities are basically there to do it at scale. It's the logical evolution of email personalizion > website personalizion > everything digital personalizion

I genuinely mean this. I cannot imagine a more bleak dystopian notion than the idea of all art being turned into slop designed to coddle my exact perceived intentions. The point of literature, film, music, and art is to be exposed to the interior lives of others. Who are these people.

Add in a LLM that can create even more personalization catered to you and this will be even more effective at taking your time(value to the game creator).

Morgan Johnson@poormojo.bsky.social

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

Some aspects of the male loneliness crisis is skill-based. The Starbucks next to this high school always sports a 20:0 girl to guy ratio.

American Medical System Dermatologist: don't go into the sun Cardiologist: don't drink coffee Primary Care Physician: lose weight Psychiatrist: double your meds

One of the biggest issues I had being responsible for building internal LLM-power processes/tools/applications is that when they "go rouge", it will be my fault and not the provider. My executives aren't going to accept "the order management agent went rouge". I built it, I'm in charge of it.

Shane Gillis is a perfect example of "Don't trust the persona". He has this "aw shucks, I'm just a fat dumbass, regular guy" persona. He's not an idiot: he's a highly successful comic. The people he closely associates with—Joe Rogan, Theo Vonn, Kill Tony guy—all helped Trump in '24.

And it ends up neutralizing what he actually says. Last night in his SNL monologue, he called woman "whores" and had a large section dedicated to men creeping on/scary women while hiking. An entire sketch where the premise was sneakers help men sneak around woman. "She'll never hear you coming"

Is he talented? I think so. Does he choose edgy material that only works due to the person? Absolutely. And there are consequences to art, it's not just a joke, whatever that even means. So enjoy the guy, just know he profits off male toxicity, misogyny, ableism, and a variety of other isms.

From softball interviews on popular podcast, where the very inclusion + no rigor = endorsement, to performing at the NYC rally, this comedy circle was instrumental in the young male vote. Gillis is influential and associates with an influential group. The aw shucks thing is just a comedy persona.
