Congratulations to Toronto @mayoroliviachow.ca on her re-election tonight. Given Doug Ford’s constant interference & distractions, Toronto is arguably the hardest city in Canada to be the mayor of. I’m hopeful that in her first FULL term, Mayor Chow will lean in on more bold, creative city-building.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

Toronto, don’t forget that polls don’t win elections. Turnout wins elections. Please go out today and #VOTE for @mayoroliviachow.ca.

This is 100% right. We need nation building that doesn’t focus on enriching the oligarchy, but rather targets meaningful sustainability in terms of climate, biodiversity, & fulfilling jobs for people of all abilities. We must stop subsidizing dairy & beef, & start investing in transit & cycling.

It feels like such a long time since I’ve been excited for election results, but tonight’s returns are encouraging for a council that can continue making #ldnont a great place to live! #onpoli.

I’ve cast my ballot in #onpoli #municipalelection2026 & I hope you do too. In #ldnont, our results will be worse than they should be b/c #QueensPark axed our #RankedBallot system in 2020. We cannot forget this & must bring it back! The media should report on the results, & what they might have been.

You should snag both of them, if you have any interest in early North American History. #cdnhist #VastEarlyAmerica

Bike lanes are a major part of the solution to #Ontario’s traffic woes. The fact that they are being fought is a move in the wrong direction & reflects the power of cronyism & corruption in the current government. #onpoli #cdnpoli

A #ldnont thing: my #AirCanada flight today got pushed back 2 hrs, leaving only 45 minutes for my connection at #YYZ. Not to be a pessimist, but the likelihood I arrive at my destination today has dropped considerably. I can’t wait to have more options (which start this spring with #PorterAirlines).

I’ve got a lot of respect for the ground & flight crews working for #AirCanada, because they are routinely screwed over by their management who - at least for regional travel in #Ontario - can’t get it right. They have to face passengers who are - rightly - very upset. #onpoli #cdnpoli #ldnont

At the rate of compensation required for delays over four hours delay ($400 per passenger), it would have been far cheaper, & quicker for us, for #AirCanada to have hired a bus when they realized the significance of this delay. I would already be in bed. #ldnont

Made it there fine… home: not so lucky. We are on hour 4 of a delay… at least it looks like the flight will actually leave. The big question: will the Air Passenger Protection Regulation kick in. It should, because this sort of thing is routine on the regional routes, but not elsewhere. #ldnont

One of the reasons I get so worked up about all this, apart from the clear-and-present danger, is it's a symptom of something bigger that's rotten. Many smart & serious establishment people still think it's silly to talk about though.

In Quebec City, an 11 year old boy was killed while he was on his bike earlier this year. A ceremony set for this weekend to install a ghost bike was cancelled because the boy's family has been inundated with hateful messages because ... speed bumps have been installed.

Really sorry to see this sad news. Irene Mathyssen was a wonderful Queen of #FanshawePioneerVillage & represented the people of east #ldnont well. May she rest in peace.

This is a great thread about some positive #CivilDisobedience in #Toronto tonight. We need more of this, fighting back against laws that make this world more, rather than less, dangerous. #onpoli #cdnpoli

Tom Flood@tomflood.bsky.social

Here is what Ford wants to rip out. In a city stuck in debilitating gridlock, nothing better than removing bike lanes and getting more people driving. 🙌🙌

Glad to see some #CivilDisobedience fighting back against #BikeLane removal. This is a dumb policy that allocates resources & money away from things that matter for cheap political points. #onpoli #cdnpoli

Shawn Micallef@shawnmicallef.bsky.social

So different than 2012 when Jarvis was removed. Handful of people on street during removals (including @fuzzywuzzyto.bsky.social who layer in front of the remover). Far bigger & diverse cycling community now. Fucking w a different beast now.

Forecasted 27 degrees today in #ldnont - 11 degrees above normal - but g/d forbid that you & I change our behaviour to reduce our use of greenhouse gas emitting fossil fuels. Aside for the oil & gas industry, & auto manufacturers, I don’t understand our reluctance to change. #ClimateMatters

Sums up my view. Everyone wins with #BikeLanes. They make it easier for drivers to leave the car at home, reducing traffic on already clogged roads. They also provide more structure (& rules) for cyclists, some of whom behave just as badly as the drivers we complain about. #ldnont #onpoli #cdnpoli

As a driver, I want physically separated lanes for bikes As a pedestrian, I want physically separated lanes for bikes Also as a cyclist, I want physically separated lanes for bikes

#Canada: land where you can legally run a freight train through the downtown of a significant city at rush hour - inconveniencing thousands of ppl - but #BikeLanes are the “problem.” ( The train tracks are over a kilometer away)

The impact of this is that my #ldnont bus, scheduled to come every 15 minutes or so, arrived 25 minutes late, and now I am significantly late. In the age of digital scheduling, this should not happen. #onpoli #cdnpoli

Another real loss for #cdnhist. Steele’s work was pivotal & profound.

Neil M Kennedy@nmkennedy.bsky.social

Sad to note the passing of Ian K Steele this past weekend. His book English Atlantics (Oxford 1986) was one of a trio of books that year establishing the Atlantic World paradigm. Trained first as a Jesuit, then in London, the Canadian praire lad became a gentle scholar and mentor. #AtlanticWorld

One of the #cdnhist folks who made a real impact on the field. May he rest in peace.

Sad to learn that Carl Berger passed away last week. He taught half of the Canadian history survey that I took at the University of Toronto. His book The Sense of Power played a major role in shaping my understanding of Canada's relationship to imperialism in the late-19th and early-20th centuries.

In addition to breaking the rules, this candidate sent a clear message about her values by pulling this stunt on #NDTR. As a councillor, this candidate has behaved in repulsive ways & will almost certainly embarrass our city, if elected mayor. #ldnont www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

This is 100% correct. We see this in how the political elite & - sadly - too many leaders in #cdnpse talk about the university. Their words don’t align with what is actually happening on the ground. We should be weary about politicians who are comfortable with this practice. #cdnpoli

The perception that red tape is preventing Canada from building major projects doesn’t hold hold up. Hundreds of projects, worth hundreds of billions of dollars are planned under existing regulations. Yet Carney blames a bureaucratic maze for stifling growth to justify his deregulatory agenda.

This is a good summary of @alexusherhesa.bsky.social ‘s post on the “Concordia Revolution.” It contrasts with what I posted yesterday, & reminds me of Ray Ivany’s time at Acadia in the early-2010s, where he had to fix a decade plus of bad Presidential leadership. #cdnpse bsky.app/profile/ianm...

I agree with the end goal of this piece about university presidency, but the problem is manifest in the argument. Presidents must support their #CommunityOfScholars, not require loyalty/obedience of that community. Real leadership in many #universities is missing, which is the core problem. #cdnpoli
