The advantages that the existing tramline has brought, and the recent effects of not being able to operate the section from Princes Street to Newhaven, has demonstrated how vital Edinburgh’s trams are.

The cost of not progressing the Northern section will be huge in terms of impact on modal shift, capacity, connection of areas of multiple deprivation, mobility, climate targets, congestion, health, development, housing, and economic benefit. Read the deputation: 👇 transform.scot/2026/09/09/t...

How are big cars changing our streets? Across Scotland, cars are getting bigger and heavier year on year. Designed for off-road use, SUVs (Sports Utility Vehicles) and 4x4s take up more space on our streets - making towns and cities increasingly congested and dangerous.

In our latest report, we found that local authorities are already grappling with the pressures created by heavier, bulkier vehicles. As vehicles have grown, so have the pressures on limited street space.

We’re calling on decision‑makers to act on the evidence and introduce measures that prioritise safer, healthier and fairer use of street space. Can you help us? Our match-funded campaign launched last week, supporting our work with communities and local government to tackle oversized vehicles.

Donations support workshops, policy briefings, public materials, and on‑street polling to understand and communicate public appetite for traffic‑reduction measures focused on larger vehicles.

The rise of bigger cars is an emerging problem. SUVs now make up over half of new car sales & they’re changing how streets look & feel. Bigger cars mean: • more space taken up at the kerb • reduced visibility • higher risks for people walking and cycling We look at what policy can do in response.

Car ownership isn’t universal in Scotland. • 1 in 4 people have no access to a car • 66% in low-income households Yet parking policy often assumes universal car ownership. Our new report explores what that means for fairness in our streets.

Our first thoughts on today's #ScotBudget: "We’re pleased to see the introduction of a private jet tax. We now need the government to build on this move towards fairer pricing for the most polluting mode of transport by tackling frequent flyers and reducing short haul domestic flights."

🎁 Before we sign off for the festive period, here’s our year wrapped: shorturl.at/cYuCA From championing rail in Parliament to challenging SUVs on our streets, it’s been a busy year making the case for sustainable transport. We'll be back on 5 January for a busy 2026!

Tackling traffic and improving journey times is critical to better buses. Our bus policy advisor Chris Day provides a critical commentary of the recent debate on #bus, checking the pulse on party positions ahead of #Holyrood2026 elections. Read in full here: transform.scot/2025/12/16/b...

🚗 UK Budget Response from Transform Scotland Transform Scotland spokesperson, Emilia Lauder, welcomes the Chancellor’s baby steps toward fairer motoring taxes. The new mileage-based charge for EVs and long-overdue changes to fuel duty finally move us closer to a 'polluter pays' system.

But, Emilia says the Chancellor missed a major opportunity. SUVs - the UK’s heaviest, most polluting vehicles - remain untouched by tax reform. A Large Vehicle Levy could raise nearly £2bn a year to reinvest in public transport and address the damage these vehicles cause.

That’s why we’re excited to share our new paper, "The harms of SUV use in Scottish cities,” written by Professor Adrian Davis. It discusses something many of us have noticed: cars are getting bigger, heavier, and harder to live alongside.

It's massively overdue for UK Government to start taxing polluters rather than labour.

We’ve joined forces across civil society & have written a joint letter to the HM Treasury advising urgent tax reform on the UK’s heaviest, most polluting cars. We’re calling for change: a straightforward large vehicle levy, that would raise nearly £2bn for vital public investment. #AutumnBudget
