How do cells lining our epithelium evolve over a lifetime? 🧬 We built PHYFUM, a new Bayesian phylogenetic method to reconstruct the evolutionary history of normal tissue using Fluctuating Methylation. Here's what we found 👇 #CancerEvolution doi.org/10.64898/202...

In colon, stem cells divide & so do the crypts they reside in: a multi-level evolutionary process. D Mallo, P Bousquets @heathergrant.bsky.social @calumgabbutt.bsky.social have made "PhyPhum" to lineage trace somatic evolution in human glandular tissues www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6... @icr.ac.uk

Cases of bowel cancer in young adults are increasing at an alarming rate: there are too many stories like Bradley's, a young man who died from bowel cancer in his early twenties. @icr.ac.uk are fundraising so we can lead more research to prevent and better treat bowel cancer at all ages.

Today we launch our appeal to give everyone with bowel cancer the hope of a cure. Our world-class scientists are pushing the boundaries of research to shape a future in which bowel cancer is more preventable, predictable and treatable. Please support us today: www.icr.ac.uk/support-us/o...

🔥🔥🔥💥💥💥🌶️🌶️🌶️ Hottest new lab in town, led by the exceptional @calumgabbutt.bsky.social, is recruiting it's first #PhD student. If you love #maths and somatic #evolution it could be your dream come true! 🌶️🌶️🌶️💥💥💥🔥🔥🔥

If you’re interested in machine learning and mathematical modelling, we’re recruiting a PhD student to develop new methods for studying cancer evolution at @imperialimmuno.bsky.social www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Is artificial general intelligence (AGI) already here? A thoughtful & compelling case: www.nature.com/articles/d41... "General intelligence can...emerge from simple learning rules applied at scale to patterns latent in human language: patterns [that] encode much of the structure of reality itself"

nature.comDoes AI already have human-level intelligence? The evidence is clearThe vision of human-level machine intelligence laid out by Alan Turing in the 1950s is now a reality. Eyes unclouded by dread or hype will help us to prepare for what comes next.

Are you fascinated by cancer biology and also ❤️ 💻 ? Feel like this ->😻<- at the thought of exploring oodles of cancer genomes, single cells and spatial multiomics data? Then our core Data Science Team at @icr.ac.uk might be the place for you. Vacancy here: jobs.icr.ac.uk/vacancies/14...

Huge congratulations to Fran on being awarded the ERC Consolidator Grant! 🎉 Such a well-deserved recognition of an outstanding trajectory and a truly creative, exciting proposal on T-cell clonal hematopoiesis. Can’t wait to see the discoveries that come out of this project. So proud of you! 👏✨

👏 Congratulations to Francisco Martínez Jiménez‼️ The head of the Computational Immunogenomics Group at #VHIO has been awarded an @erc.europa.eu Consolidator Grant to uncover new immunotherapy strategies built on expanded T-cell clones. ➡️ https://linke.to/ERCFranMVHIO #ERCCoG @cerca.cat

We held the first #CANPOP symposium today (cancer population genetics club) @icr.ac.uk. 6 excellent & didactic talks, all applying mathematical #popgen theory to dissect somatic evolutionary dynamics: spanning the full range of pre-cancer, metastasis through to 6000 year old transmissible cancer...

We focused the first #CANPOP on our local SE England community, but would be delighted to open it up nationally or even internationally for #CANPOP2. Our goal is to help grow the cancer popgen community. Please do shout if you'd like to join us (also we're open to ideas of how to organise this too)

Here's @calumgabbutt.bsky.social's nice thread on our #EVOFLUx paper in @nature.com that uses fluctuating methylation to track cancer evolution

Calum Gabbutt@calumgabbutt.bsky.social

Cancer is an evolutionary disease, but does knowing a cancer’s evolutionary past help predict its future? Out today in @nature, we learnt the evolution of 2000 lymphoid cancers and found it was highly correlated with clinical outcomes! (1/7) rdcu.be/eFrrc

Studying cancer evolution needs multi-region or single cell seq for phylogenetics, right? Amazingly (I think!) we found single-sample bulk methylation suffices, via analysis of "fluctuating methylation". In @nature.com today led by brilliant @calumgabbutt.bsky.social www.nature.com/articles/s41...

nature.comFluctuating DNA methylation tracks cancer evolution at clinical scale - NatureCancer evolutionary dynamics are quantitatively inferred using a method, EVOFLUx, applied to fluctuating DNA methylation.

This looks very cool... implementing mathematical models of cell and tissue biology from plain-text human readable statements. I want to have a play with it! Congratulations Paul @mathcancer.bsky.social and team

Who were the ancient Egyptians? It is expressed in the extraordinary historical and archaeological record, but what about ancestry links to other ancient individuals? Today we report the successful sequencing of the whole genome of an individual who lived in Egypt about ~4700 years ago.
