Last 🫎 for now. Are you my dad? Moose calves are usually wary about approaching bulls. This one was fortunate as this big guy is pretty laid back and besides, mom was coming up behind him. Made for a nice family (?) get together. Anchorage #Alaska 🦊

While I was busy photographing another moose this delinquent was contemplating running off with my bike. 3rd moose this fall to take an interest in getting some wheels. Anchorage #Alaska 🦊🫎

The little bulls enjoying sparing but its mostly learning and practice. No intent to hurt anymoose. Serious business though, a third little guy in this group had broken most of one antler off! Anchorage #Alaska 🦊🫎

The little bucks spend the peak of the rut trying to sneak into where the action is happening and then getting run off by the big bulls. Anchorage #Alaska 🦊🫎

Will travel for cones! Red Crossbills have a specialized bill designed for prying open the stiff cones of conifers in order to get the nutritious seeds on the inside. These enigmatic birds will nest anywhere, at any time of year, provided there is an abundance of food.

The world's largest penguin colony has lost its title 🐧 A remote volcanic island near Antarctica has lost over half a million chinstrap penguins since 2011, a decline so steep it could see the species reassessed as 'Endangered'. 🧵1/2

The most triggering thing you can do to a birder is call something a "sea gull" and that's exactly what Utah's legislature did when they chose their state bird

It's not just bulls. Here's an earnest looking cow on the hunt for some leafy greens before they all drop for winter. Anchorage #Alaska #moose 🦊🫎

I'm not done with moose yet! One of the up and coming local bull moose. He stays clear of the big guys but is still engaged in the rut as he and a lovely cow were steaming up the forest when I last saw him. Anchorage #Alaska 🦊🫎

Perhaps my favorite area moose but he's been playing hard to get this fall, either hiding or way up a mountain. Finally I endured an epic hike through the alders to catch up with him (then he led me back to where I started and he knew a better route). Chugach State Park #Alaska 🦊🫎

Moose testing the air to check for pheromones that aid in assessing if there are cows ready to mate. The raised head and lip curl is known as the Flehmen response. Anchorage #Alaska 🦊🫎

SUCK-UP: A cow muskox keeps watch as its calf (wee rump visible below her belly) suckles in the tundra wilderness outside of Nome, Alaska. #wildlife #wildlifephotography #animals #nature

Several of the Moose in one of the parks I frequent are blind in one eye. Presumably battle scars from taking on a bull with very long brow tines. They seem none the worse for it, I guess they get enough info from sound and smell. Anchorage #Alaska 🦊

Early and late in the rut bull moose can be quite sociable but when time to mate heats up they have little tolerance for each other. The little guy here is eating Devil's Club. Painful to touch but they like it. Anchorage #Alaska 🦊

I've heard that ravens sometimes help wolves looking for moose, well I can confirm that this Bald Eagle was no help to me in my search. Just sat and watched. I guess they just want dead salmon this time of year. Anchorage #Alaska #BirdsSeenIn2026 🪶

A feeding frenzy of kittiwakes is a dinner bell for jaegers. It took them a bit to arrive but before long 8 or so Pomarine Jaegers arrived to persuade the kitties to share some fish. Resurrection Bay #Alaska 🪶🦑

Today’s #BirdOfTheDay theme is: #Seabirds; any bird found at sea or the coast. I should have looked up today's theme as I accidentally picked a suitable image.

Since 1999, Alaska Science Center biologists have cataloged over 3,000 reports across Alaska of so-called avian keratin disorder in black-capped chickadees, which they cite as “the highest concentration of (visible) deformities ever recorded in a wild bird population.” www.adn.com/alaska-news/...

I wanted to photograph this moose as he was shedding velvet but on the big day he played hard to get. Once it was gone I couldn't shake him, he was everywhere I went. Chugach State Park #Alaska

Listen up little buck, you have an entire mountain and yet you want to walk right where I'm standing. OK, wherever you want to go. Chugach State Park #Alaska 🦊

The general public hasn't been able to travel far into Denali National Park since a persistent, creeping landslide made the road impassable in 2021. But this month, the opening of the new Pretty Rocks Bridge means hikers and cyclists can now easily cross the landslide area.

Riding his horse from Denver to Cheyenne in 1876, the ornithologist Elliot Coues saw more than a hundred birds killed by flying into a telegraph wire in less than an hour. He's one of the earliest writers to reckon with the toll of the built environment on wildlife.

Horned Puffins were still numerous arpund the Chiswell Islands, Alaska Maritime NWR during my recent visit. Both in the ocean and on the cliffs. Look at those horns! 🪶🦑😈
