Quick thread explaining this more simply: Three kinds of communication that can be "intercepted": oral, wire, electronic. Oral: conversation w/multiple ppl in the same place. Wire: historically, telephone. Electronic: "everything else." The wiretap statute identifies the defenses to all three:
