Do I have any sound design followers? What are the three tips that will make me immediately good at sound design? I’m using an old pair of Apple earbuds and I live under a busy flight path, so I’m already set up for success.

Another little neighborhood walk for y'all. Getting down to the final stretch and, clearly, I'm prioritizing my time well. #screenshotsaturday #proceduralgeneration

LSD: Revamped version 1.0 is now available on itch - the game is done! There is also an important announcement about the future of the project. Link below ⬇️

As walking sim dev, the term never felt right for what I make, but I’m at a loss for an alternative. Stroll sim? Meander-athon? Space-out-vania?

So me & @gothpink.bsky.social have been wanting to put out feelers for environment artists (2D/3D) for #southwoods, but we're not sure how to go about it. So uh this is me going about it. We don't have much in the way of budget, we're also looking for publishers. Hit us up in DMs if interested

Not doing any procedural meshes (so far) for this one. Still procedurally generated, but it's kind of nice environment modeling by hand for a change. Been a while.

im glad i got into david lynch when i did because it hammered home to me that a story doesn't have to make real world sense at all as long as it has a degree of internal consistency and, importantly, emotional resonance. Nothing in twin peaks s3 makes "sense" but god damn does it feel true

Late start from being out of town, but I'm playing around with some things... We'll see. #screenshotsaturday

I always think, “I should’ve made a little horror game for October” the day before Halloween. Never fails.

Something about video games, that is true for all art, is that people dedicate their life to create stuff whether there is any way to earn money from it or not. People's motivations are very varied. But the side that makes us create something unique just because it's good will always remain in us.

look at me pretending to be a programmer caring about "virtual" "template" "functions" i just want to make video'd games

Getting constantly jumped by bandits in RDR2 when I just wanted to have a nice ride about was a direct contributor to me making walking sims. It’s a bummer that the games with the most care and detail put into their worlds are all Stress Playgrounds™.

All open world games should have a zero combat/low gameplay mode where you can just chill in the environtments that dozens to hundreds of devs got crunched to death to build.

Happy #screenshotsaturday, y'all. Everyone tells new devs to start learning by cloning games like Pong. My advice: don't stop at Pong. However long you've been at it, recreating games or mechanics you like (or don't like) helps you understand the hows and whys better than just playing.

Re: my previous post about CRT effects… see all that beautiful chroma smearing?

haha omg, was fooling around with a VHS plugin for after effects and now I feel like i'm legally obligated to find a shader like this and include it as a gimmick option in Tiny Tires. ❤️🚗📼📺

For those of you who use these plugins and post in the GBS discord with questions… y’all gotta ping me so I actually see them instead of finding them accidentally four months later, haha.

Finally updated my plugins for GB Studio 4.2.2! - Simple Car - Simple Tank - Vintage Platformer (Donkey Kong-esque platforming) - Vintage Adventure (Zelda 1 style movement) Let me know if you do something cool with them. github.com/tzschk/gbs-p...

> find an article on level design > ask if it's about level design or FPS environment design > they don't understand > pull out diagram explaining the difference between level design and environment design > they laugh and say, "it's a good article, sir." > read article > it's FPS environment design

Bonus points for, “the best way to get over the ‘blank page’ is to start with the gimmicks and story beats the gameplay and narrative designers have assigned to you.”

Game design isn’t about being able to identify problems. Everyone who plays games can identify problems. Game design is about diagnosing player experience, having intent, and executing. I think to a lot of folks outside dev, game criticism (an art in itself) is seen as interchangeable with design.

advice for programmers: for most procedural generation you don't actually need "good" number generators! use whatever you like. it doesn't have to be cryptographically secure, it's the x, y position of a cactus.

More games need to made with this exact scope. I don’t mean “1998 low poly vibes”, but “dinosaur with a gun and a jetpack running around collecting eggs with a jump that sounds like a cliché cartoon pogo stick, also, I think they’re a time traveler.” Make your motto, “tenuous at best.”
