Fun memory of mine was hearing this quote for the first time as a lyric in this Neko Case album, then stumbling into it on a first read through of Moby Dick, then playing MGSV immediately after. Went from 0 interest in Melville to suddenly thinking he was the most important guy who ever lived

Men find yet another way to film and harass women without consent, this time, using a remote controlled robot to push against a "16-year-old girl's buttocks", and this is how the most well-resourced news agencies cover it: Read *our* piece here: www.404media.co/theres-nothi...

I don't understand this argument, less so having read the piece, which primarily summarizes the licensing history of this franchise. None of these games are anywhere near as good as the original trilogy or Andor, and there have been wayyy more dogshit Star Wars games than there've been classics

Also what kind of person says "I love Star Wars for its glorious combat." Like I think I get it but these aren't, like, martial arts movies. The big fights only land because you get invested in the world and, importantly, the characters

And who says people don't like Star Wars for its character building? The entire engine of those (pre-Disney) movies is character building. They mainly revolve around one scary guy's ability to grow and change

If anything, I would argue Racer and Zero Company are exceptions to the rule only because they give the player space to do stuff that matters outside of combat mechanics (I am assuming for Schrier combat translates to the flat category of "gameplay"), which AAAs have always struggled with

What makes Andor "experimental?" Eraserhead is experimental. Andor is a pretty normal show. It's a political thriller. The showrunner has made this kind of thing before and no one was calling those experimental

"She's into that sort of thing" and the "sort of thing" is social drinking, an activity so hard coded into our collective culture that it predates all currently practiced religions

This is the kind of thing that drives me bonkers. Arbitrarily transforming the way every cutscene and environment is lit is a massive change. From what I can tell, scenes with hand-designed lighting have been replaced by a "realistic" simulation. The visual coherence of some scenes have changed

We're at the point where every remaster should generate at least some skepticism about what "upgrading" a game means, but instead the remaining press/YouTubers out there are totally incurious about even very basic aspects of the subject they cover

I heard a YouTuber talking about this remaster say, 'hey, maybe one day AI will just let us set our own preferences for how a game looks.' An astonishingly anti-art sentiment. No analysis at all, a customer-is-always-right mentality about other people's personal work. Insanity

This happens in film from time to time where visual characteristics are changed between rereleases, and it always generates discussion around what that means (remember when they recolored The Matrix?). In games, though, the very idea of visual art is treated as incidental to engaging with the thing

One productive part of this phenomenon where everyone in the world is talking about one guy who they seem to know nothing about is that I really do think it reveals a lot of the people calling shots on here and elsewhere fundamentally do not know where the average person is at

I work in one of the most libbed out places imaginable and people there are sounding more and more like Piker over time and basically never like the many posters out there opining about all this. The internet might be more 'real life' than we like to admit

This guy was phone banking for candidates on stream. People were coming out to events and donating to campaigns at his request. Weird to see people make big claims about what he is or isn't doing seemingly without ever engaging with his work or being even tangentially aware of it

I hate boomer slop. Beyond the fact that this argument is straight up wrong, what is this format? Is that a quote? What does the Dominion lawsuit have to do with the "decline of American civilization?" And who the fuck is that guy? Is *he* "pinkhairedlawyer?" Where the fuck is his pink hair then???

darren32359.bsky.social@darren32359.bsky.social

This post is wrong on like three levels. Pizza is an American invention, you can't really dunk on Americans by just making a shitty pizza. It's also not 'trolling.' Putting fries on pizza is an Italian thing not an American thing

Hane@hane.bsky.social

we went to a highly recommended pizza restaurant in Formia, Italy. the fact that the menu consisted of gorgeously made Italian pizzas with fresh local ingredients, and then also contained this monstrosity called a "pizza Americana" is S-tier trolling by the Italians

It is kind of interesting that Americans crave derision from other, similar countries. American liberals in particular seem compelled to perform this kind of American anti-exceptionalism as if this is somehow meaningful to Europeans, although it's really for the edification of the American doing it

One of the things that most annoys me about the Emily Wilson discourse is the argument that film criticism is this very specific, principled field, where your arguments have to be hyper incisive if the review is "mean." Non-scholarly film criticism has literally never been like that

Not saying I agree or that hot takes are the ceiling of film criticism, they very much are not, but the insistence that Wilson somehow overstepped is fuckin crazy. Like very clearly the insane amount of anger about the review is not actually about the content of the review or concern for film crit

One of the things that most annoys me about the Emily Wilson discourse is the argument that film criticism is this very specific, principled field, where your arguments have to be hyper incisive if the review is "mean." Non-scholarly film criticism has literally never been like that

Ebert (who I love) was out there saying shit like "the people who made this movie are stupid and I hate it" when he felt like it. Kael was rude as fuck sometimes too. And frankly I love that lol I miss that era. It's better than all the hedging and reliance on summary you get now of days

What a reactionary response to this review. If your first instinct when seeing a negative take is to pontificate about whether or not a person from such-and-such auxillary background to an adaptation "should" be able to discuss it, you're being an anti-intellectual weirdo

‘Nolan has read at least the first line of my translation of 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘖𝘥𝘺𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘺 into iambic pentameter. In one interview, he cited my version of it: “Tell me about a complicated man.” But I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.’ New, by Emily Wilson www.lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v4...

If you think the person who translated the source material for the script shouldn't be able to critique the movie from that perspective, then why should you care about the review at all except to invalidate it? Deal with the claims she made in the review directly or ignore it

I even saw someone post that you should only be able to review films if you love film as an art form. Why would that possibly be true lmao imagine if that's how analysis worked - you can only write about this if you can prove you like it already

"bio-inspired robot" every time this gets reposted the stakes get higher, in a few months re-posters will be saying this little wind up toy is actually a 4 billion dollar AI-powered android

Best individual fake quote is that one from 2016 where Kurt Cobain advocates for a 2016 Trump presidency in the '90s. So funny to imagine a journalist asking Cobain to predict the near-future of US politics for seemingly no reason and Cobain responding by waxing poetic about a Trumpian utopia

I don't think the lesson here is 'if you don't control the narrative optimally the internet will make fun of you when you die,' the lesson is that Kirk never had an organic online following to begin with. People with no attachment to this guy were being asked to treat him like MLK Jr at gun point

Eliot Higgins@eliothiggins.bsky.social

Among Gen A he's basically become a funny meme with no context to who he was or his beliefs. Basically he's Keyboard Cat to them - ‘His legacy is cringe’: how Charlie Kirk became a punchline among the young - even his supporters www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...

You can't enforce popularity onto people. There has to be some organic buy-in already that the figure in question was important. Instead, there were mainly right wing orgs and aggrieved older guys who usually only post in insular communities demanding this guy be deified to everyone on the internet

Not to be annoying (sorry can't help it lol) but at a certain point this whole gerontocracy argument Klippenstein has is just unfiltered ageism. The problem was never that there are 'too many olds' or whatever the hell it's that the Dem party has shit politics. Who cares about a sprained ankle

Use AI to do...what? Hallucinate inventory for staff? Patronize the customer at checkout? Regardless, posts like this are good news. If the industry boosters reflexively acknowledge that just stating that the tech is useful will piss most people off, it means they're losing the fight

This will make some folks mad :). The best way for these grocery stores to work is if they use AI to get an edge over private grocery stores. AI is the one way for the state government to out perform private enterprises.

It's kinda upsetting how deeply entrenched low quality AI videos are in the 55+ side of the internet. It's always insanely uncanny pet videos or body horror-oriented political satire. And they're always just like "who gives a shit, ignorance is bliss!!!" about it when you point it out

Doesn't appear in the piece itself as much but the framing of this as a generational problem instead of a structural one is reactionary. Besides, there are a zillion artists writing material about this, everyone is doing that all the time actually lol, let me tell you about this guy Kendrick Lamar

Why is a 76-year-old man doing all the hard work in this moment? Where are the Millennial/Gen Z artists (ahem, Taylor Swift) to shake their audiences into sobriety about what is going on? open.substack.com/pub/saltypol...

Was going to say I think this writer exists in a very, let's say, suburban cultural bubble, but even at face value the argument is straight up just untrue. Have we already forgotten all the direct political commentary by Billie Eilish or Chappelle Roan?

Last thing: "[He] did not have to say Trump’s name every five minutes. He did something more powerful. He sang about the architecture of Trumpism: greed, domination, resentment, abandonment, and the desperate refusal by so many of us to surrender." Infinite artists also do this lol, come on now
