Our paper is out in @conphysjournal.bsky.social! We tested how the androgenic agricultural pollutant 17β-trenbolone affects immunity and reproductive allocation in eastern mosquitofish. A thread below (1/6): doi.org/10.1093/conp... @ceb-uwa.bsky.social @monashbiol.bsky.social

Pollutants from agricultural runoff can disrupt freshwater fish physiology. This study shows some contaminants disrupt hormonal signalling in eastern mosquitofish, diverting energy to reproduction at the expense of immune function. Find out more ⬇️ academic.oup.com/conphys/arti...

Findings from our study show that different, but interconnected, biological systems can vary in their sensitivity to pollutants. It further suggests that immune traits may be an early, sensitive indicator of exposure to psychoactive pharmaceuticals. 5/6

Fluoxetine exposure did not affect rainbowfish behaviour, including activity, freezing, or shelter use. It also had no detectable effect on their skin mucus microbiome. 🦠3/6

Surprisingly, fluoxetine exposure altered baseline cellular immune traits in fish, reducing white blood cell and lymphocyte counts at both exposure levels while increasing neutrophil count under low fluoxetine exposure.🥊 4/6

Gabe studied the effects of 28-day exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of the psychoactive pollutant fluoxetine on behaviour, baseline cellular immune traits, and skin mucus microbiome composition in Murray River rainbowfish. 🐟🦠2/6

Thinking this could be you? Reach out if you have any questions about the position, the city of Mainz (e.g. where on earth is that), the lab group dynamics or just what it’s like to work with Hanna. We look forward to welcoming you!

Hanna Kokko@kokkonut.bsky.social

Come and work with us (the Kokkonuts) as a postdoc! Our research within (theory-evo-eco) is broad; let's say it's implicitly defined by the journal club papers we read. Which is why the application process includes a JC-related task, I hope it'll be a fun one for you! www.evoldir.net/brian/evoldi...

The takeaway is that pollution can do more than directly reduce survival or reproduction. By interfering with hormone-mediated physiology, androgenic pollutants may reshape the trade-offs linking immunity, reproduction and fitness. 5/6 Watch this space as more work from this project will follow 👀

Across males, stronger immune responses were associated with lower sperm production, consistent with a potential immunity–reproduction trade-off. (4/6)

Mosquitofish were exposed to environmentally relevant levels of no, low, and high pollution concentrations. Exposed fish had reduced PHA-induced swelling, lower white blood cell counts and altered neutrophil–lymphocyte ratios. (2/6)

What a pleasure to attend the @isbe2026.bsky.social Hamilton Lecture by Emeritus Professor Leigh W Simmons. Bonus for @ceb-uwa.bsky.social people to enjoy it not once but twice!

Our director, Leigh W. Simmons, delivers the Hamilton Lecture at #ISBE2026 🇮🇹 @isbe2026.bsky.social @behavecol.bsky.social Highlighting contributions to the understanding of female agency in sexual selection over his career, we congratulate Leigh on being distinguished as 2026’s Hamilton Lecture.

Great talk by @brainiants.bsky.social on the first day of @isbe2026.bsky.social on intraspecific variation in Oz ants 🐜

Kimberley Wong@brainiants.bsky.social

I’ve been busy at #ISBE2026 🇮🇹 presenting the results of the 1st chapter of my PhD thesis 🐜 If you missed my talk on intraspecific variation in an ant endemic to Australia, come chat at tonight’s social event or reach out! @ceb-uwa.bsky.social @mandyridley.bsky.social @notthebestsam.bsky.social

What a lovely opportunity to present Gabe’s work @isbe2026.bsky.social We missed you at the conference @gabrielmelhado.bsky.social

Bob Wong@bbmwong.bsky.social

PhD student @gabrielmelhado.bsky.social couldn‘t make it to #ISBE2026 so the wonderful @upama.bsky.social stepped in (🙏) to share the results of Gabe’s work looking at effects of pharmaceutical pollution on sickness behaviour & immunity in Australian rainbowfish. @monashbiol.bsky.social #BobWongLab

Definitely go here!! Not only because it is such an important topic, but also because @katelaskowski.bsky.social initiated a new section in our own @isbe2026.bsky.social journal where you can publish these results!!! 🥳👍🏻💪🏻

Kate Laskowski@katelaskowski.bsky.social

Are you jazzed about rigorous research and want to figure out how to incorporate more practices in your group? Come to my talk today (Tues) @isbe2026.bsky.social at 2pm in the Londra room! I'll be spreading the gospel about the new Replication Studies section in Behavioral Ecology!

Does early-life environment stress affect future reproductive investment? 🌊🐟 Our new paper found that when raised in fluctuating salinity, mosquitofish females produce eggs with lower protein, while older males had higher ejaculate glycogen content! Read the full paper here doi.org/10.1111/1365...
