Sugar, S1: Every time John Sugar checks in with Jonathan Siegel, he should greet the man with, "Dr. Livingston, I presume?"

Just placed 14th globally in the first 3-part puzzle of the 2026 Everybody Codes event. A fun warmup puzzle to kick things off!

Instead of cleaning out the playroom this Fall, just rake the mess into a corner. This is better for the environment and promotes the incubation of next year's children.

Just passed a $4.09 sign and exclaimed, "Wow, that's cheap!"

Thinking back fondly on the out-of-the-way BP gas station that sold gas for 79 cents per gallon in Salem, VA in the year 2000.

Smashing that Like button, not because I'm enthusiastic, but because I'm in my 40s and have too many calluses for this touchscreen.

Whenever I'm lazy and use a Boolean to represent 2 states, it guarantees that I will someday have to rewrite the code to support more states. Latest occurrence was this morning, on code that had only needed 2 states for 8 years.

Love Nov/Dec, when my productive schedule devolves into a bog of puzzles: - 10/26: Everybody Codes, 20 three-part coding puzzles released every weekday. - 11/13: Puzzle Boat 13, 150+ puzzlehunt puzzles from @foggybrume.bsky.social. - 12/1: Advent of Code, 12 two-part coding puzzles from @was.tl.

Maybe we should bring some open-world to college football instead. The field is 400x200yds, you can do the downs in any order, and the goalposts are splashed with glowing paint so the kicker can aim better.

EA Sports is working on a new open-world football game, seemingly separate from Madden and College Football. https://bit.ly/3VYyOrc

Watching Dark Matter S2E8 and now I need a Dayo Okeniyi / Margo Martindale buddy comedy in my life.

Safeway's in-store radio station just spelled out their pharmacy's entire website URL (complete with slashes and "dot H-T-M-L") then segued directly into Clocks by Coldplay, so I think 2003 is making a comeback.

The alternate hypothesis is that time slows down in this magical Safeway, but this is refuted by the constant presence of rotten spinach.

The winter sun illuminates my monitor and I think, "I should really clean those smudges off". Then the sun goes behind a cloud and I keep working. Repeat daily.

31 years ago today: The TC Williams Homecoming Parade. I'm marching backwards through Bradlee shopping center and conducting Louie Louie. Band director, Richard Dill, in the cozy red sweatshirt in the back. TC beat Annandale 39-20 (but 6 years later they'd lose to Robinson at Homecoming, 6-56).

Sitting in a doctor's office waiting room and I've heard the TV say "pneumococcal" more in the last 5 minutes than in my entire lifetime.

Got fired from my job for saying that PHP 5 ought be enough for anybody.

Enjoying Pluribus, S1, seven episodes in. Like all Vince Gilligan shows, some of the scenes run self-indulgently long. However, the cinematography, framing, and camera work is always really visually satisfying.

Current mini game: Finding the perfect minute to depart in order to optimize my commute through the bus routes of two neighboring school districts.

"Disavow" makes it sound like we're in a 90s CRPG where all the dialog choices lead to the same ending.

Rosalina keeps negging Princess Peach as "your special one" (in colored text no less), leading me to believe that either Peach is a few cards short of a full deck, or Rosalina and Peach are massively feuding.

This satellite image of a local data center looks like my Satisfactory world after I unlock coal power.

"Computer Science" internship at PEPCO in the 90s. The first three days, I had no computer and spent the day sorting mail and reading fly ash manuals. Quit the morning of the 4th day.

Puzzlehunt Trek #16 is open for solving at puzzlepeak.net -- 6 new solo-friendly puzzles for a grand total of 110. I'm hoping to write at least one more Trek before the end of 2026 as long as I don't get too distracted by upcoming events (Puzzle Boat 13, Everybody Codes, and Advent of Code)!

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer for Tax Purposes

Measure career growth by how many layers of indirection you can insert between yourself and the actual hard work.

10 minutes into episode 1 of Pluribus, the stream silently reset back to the beginning. I then thought it was going to be a show about time travel or multiverses until I realized that the UI had bugged out.

Brian Uri!@urizone.net

Which streaming service has the absolute worst UI and why is it AppleTV+?

Wayside Farm in Berryville hosts a great Fall activity. Mostly affordable, not crowded, massive corn maze, slides, animals, apple cannons, pig races, and gourds dropped from such great heights.

Struggling to push through James SA Corey's The Mercy of Gods. So far, it feels sterile and obligatory, like a story idea hoping for a TV option.

A feature I really appreciate about the Bluesky UI: No matter how deep down the rabbit hole I go (clicking through profiles, replies, tags, and links), I always easily get back to exactly where I left off in the original feed.
