"No, AI will not kill us all. But handing companies control without accountability might." I have read quite a few good takes about the new wave of "our products are so powerful that they are getting too dangerous" discourse. But the best one is by @vdignum.bsky.social, I think.

Researchers at Umeå University's AI Policy Lab argue the UN Scientific Panel on AI's first report leaves its independence unresolved—from both industry and states—and propose five procedures and disclosures to fix it.

Today marks the 52nd anniversary of "25 de Abril", the Carnation Revolution in Portugal. I was almost ten then. Too young to fully understand, but old enough to know something was wrong before, and that what was happening was big. #25Abril #Portugal #democracy #liberty

A piece in Science asks whether he should hire AI instead of a graduate student. But this is not about #AI. We are confusing speed and quantity with quality and relevance. Academia is about mentoring knowledge not efficiency. Blog: reflectingwide.blogspot.com/2026/03/when... #academia #Mentorship

“The problem is not only in how people use AI systems or in which setting, but in how these systems are built to stimulate attachment without accountability. With regulation still lacking… it often appears that ‘everything goes,’” write Virginia Dignum, Petter Ericson, and Jason Tucker.

Great news but it is beneath Europe's values to call it a race. As a race, it will have only loosers, no one wins. We need is a collective exploration. There are many unexplored paths to take, there are many strenghts, multidisciplinary, to apply. We are in it together, not against each other.

But the big problem is that production seems to have gotten decoupled from any useful measure of progress. There is a whole science-of-science literature hand wringing about the fact that scientific production has increased ~exponentially but progress has not accelerated and has even slowed down.
