These criminals should be held accountable for their actions
NEW: Transgender Texas Student Union has retained counsel in response to the Travis County filing related to the fake transgender mailers. It's Chris Hilton, who previously worked for Ken Paxton at the Texas Attorney General's office and left temporarily to defend Paxton in his impeachment trial.
The Democrats should take a lesson from this. The left in Brazil has jailed one would-be dictator and looks to be on the path to jailing a second. They defeated authoritarianism twice not by hating trans people but by joining with us.
Lula's victory in Brazil means a lot to a ton of people in the country, including transgender people. So when Lula won, it was a major moment of celebration when he turned to kiss a popular transgender lawmaker on the cheek. Subscribe to support our journalism.
Donald Trump represents a fascist takeover of our government. It's wholly responsible to do anything and everything within the realm of politics to stop him.
Democrats laying the groundwork for real opposition, with Congress asserting budget authority to stand against Trump abuses and rights violations. Will have to overcome cries that not passing Trump's budget is irresponsible. But it's the opposite. And starting now makes that hurdle easier to clear.
I don't think it's acceptable to ask trans people to vote for people who hate them and want to erase them
The elections are on next Tuesday, and so much is at stake, including the soul of the Democratic Party when it comes to transgender people. I am asking you to leave a very small number of races blank in which a Democrat has embraced extreme anti-trans hate. I make my case here.
Just 7 years ago, Twitter banned users who misgendered trans people. Our society knew how to treat us with dignity and respect. Then came the billionaire-funded campaign of hate and the seizing of the presidency by a demagogue. www.nclrights.org/our-work/cas...
If the Democrats can't beat jackasses like this without throwing trans people under the bus, then they deserve to lose
WELKER: Is a vote for you a vote for the Trump agenda? MIKE ROGERS: Um, I'm apologizing. I'm having some difficultly in my earpiece. But is a vote for you? I'm not sure. I'll tell you what a vote for me is. It's a great day for the state of Michigan
I invite all cis people to attempt to imagine how it feels to see your rights taken away for 2 years, and not a peep from any institutions who were supposed to be the guarantors of your freedoms. In fact, many adopt stigmatizing language and pile on the fire that is your right to happiness . . .
So, I'm being dragged for saying the incremental change idea involves fighting Democrats who want to drag their feet on giving trans people back the rights we've lost over the past 6 years... ...by Democrats who favor an incremental change approach to restoring trans people's rights.
For those who lack a powerful enough imagination or a robust capacity for empathy, it is utterly humiliating, catastrophically disempowering, isolating, disillusioning. It makes you fight with every ounce of your strength to not become demoralized and to find some way to trust and love other people.
In California, trans youth: -can be forcibly outed at schools -cannot get access to medical care -cannot compete in sports And Gavin Newsom has vetoed numerous pro-trans bills. Rob Bonta has refused to enforce laws against many hospitals denying trans youth medical care.
3 are. Out of thousands. Running nationally in tight races. You paint the whole party with the brush of a few outliers, something theoretically counter to your supposed ideology. Meanwhile, the states where Democrats are in charge continue the fight to expand rights.
He needs to lose and then get purged from the party
Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.
This exchange would make such a better campaign ad that a soundbite of some middle-aged politician with a bad haircut saying derogatory things about trans people. Do the Democrats actually understand how to inspire people?
Speaking in Maine alongside Senate candidate Troy Jackson, Alexandria Occasio-Cortez shamed politicians who "scare so easily," and shift positions after an election. "The moment you compromise the rights of a trans person in America, you compromise the rights of every citizen in America," she said.
This person is really missing the point. Nobody with a working brain is arguing there's no difference between Harris and Trump. What they're saying is that the Democrats refuse to commit to doing the work of seriously reducing the amount of fascism in our politics.
Yes and also this sort of 'uniparty' nonsense feels so hollow deployed in the midst of a national stove-touching. It turns out the difference between a 'milquetoast corporate Democrat' and Trump was really big! President Harris would not be driving trans soldiers out of the military!
Contrary to Nancy Lacore's anti-reality beliefs, trans people are not a big issue for voters, as poll after poll shows. She didn't need to bring transphobia into her House race. Shame on her for being a bigot.
In a major escalation in Dems embracing anti-trans positions, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the official campaign arm of House Democrats, released its first anti-trans ad supporting Nancy Lacore in SC-01. Transphobia is spreading among dems. Subscribe to support our journalism.

Last month I published a piece on research showing that trans women are anywhere from 1/3 to 2/3 less likely to even get a job interview, and right now I'm working on a piece regarding the wage gap for trans people (spoiler, it's huge). So no, we're not rich elites, and JK is a ghoul.
Billionaire living in a castle calls minority group she is paying hundreds of thousands of pounds of her own money to legislate out of existence ‘elitist’
Amazing that Chris Geidner is doing this work. And so terrible that the rest of the press doesn't think this is an important case to make known to the wider public. More evidence of the deep transphobia in our institutions.
Just going to be straight here — no pun intended: I am the only journalist who has been covering this issue in depth, was often the only journalist at hearings, and was the only one explaining what DOJ was actually arguing here. Support my work if you can: www.lawdork.com/subscribe
This is a great piece. It really does a great job of explaining why the "distraction" rhetoric is so harmful to trans people and other marginalized groups—it takes the Dems away from fighting for us to fighting for middle-class white men. It's shameful that Sarah McBride has adopted this rhetoric.
I wrote for @thenation.com about why people need to stop acting as though the dramatically escalating bigotry on display in US politics is just an unserious sideshow.
It really should be more of a crisis that the Executive Branch just regularly arrests people based on complete lies in an effort to brainwash the public
BREAKING: President Trump has repeatedly claimed that Democrats are cheating by allowing noncitizens to vote. But the poster child of Monday’s voter fraud sweep — who the DOJ alleges was illegally registered to vote in L.A. — is a registered Republican lamaterial.com/p/voter-frau...
Googling something else, I happened to find this article about a high school teacher transitioning in 2014. Just 12 years ago society knew how to treat trans women with kindness, support, and dignity. My heart breaks for what bigoted fascists have done in the time since. abc30.com/post/riverda...
As a person with a fully functioning brain, it's really bizarre to me that a journalist would hear something that makes no fucking sense and not think to question it
Every article has the same premise: Young people are characterizing their normal, happy childhoods as abusive and going "no contact" with their parents over minor disagreements. Every article also, late in the text, blithely acknowledges that this premise is false. www.nytimes.com/2024/07/14/h...
These letters were a compromise made between doctors and psychiatrists in the '60s, because neither wanted sole responsibility in case trans people "regretted" surgery. The fact that the field still makes us get these letters is demeaning & based in an idea of regret that has been widely disproven.
Actually, no, universities routinely de-platform certain ideas and should continue to do so. Universities don't debate the Flat Earth theory, they don't teach that people of color are inferior to whites, that women are hysterical, etc, etc. It's perfectly fine to de-platform hateful bigots.
This is how you fight fascism. Notice how different this is from bashing marginalized groups just enough to coddle hateful bigots on the right wing. If the great majority of Democrats weren't so hopeless inept and cowardly, they would be learning from this.
This is Tommy. Tommy had a question about my allegiances. Listen to the end to hear about his.
Since time immemorial, cis people have controlled our bodies, our identities, and our lives "for our own good." When will they just drop the pretense? If they really cared about our well-being, they would treat us like human beings and let us have a modicum of autonomy.
So many people buried their heads in the sand this week saying that NHS segregation of trans people was "for their safety". But even internal NHS assessments say it will cause direct harm. Sex is not binary and trans people need respectful care based on actual physiology, not anti-trans slogans.
If the Democrats don't at least try to impeach this sociopathic abomination they are useless exploiters of the marginalized groups who have steadfastly elected them year after year in spite of getting very little in return
Trump on El-Sayed: "His name is actually Abduladadalalalala. It's Adulbabababababa Mohammed Al-Sayed. So his middle name is Mohammed. So I was right. He's a jihadist."
I would love to be wrong about this, because the future of democracy probably does count on it, but history tells us that the Dems will win a pretty solid majority in both chambers and then proceed to hold useless hearing and pass marginal legislation meant to woo Republican voters.
As someone who actually loves to make myself feel uncomfortable and enter into new experiences that I know nothing about beforehand, it's really bizarre to me that people think the be all of capitalism is to make people exert no effort whatsoever.
maybe i'm old fashion but the coolest thing about video games is being taken to new worlds that i hadn't thought up and experiencing something exciting that the artists behind the game want to show me
I am a therapist specialized in serving trans people, and I cannot tell you how many of my cis counterparts need and rely on reporting like this so that they can actually know enough to help their clients. It's really vital that sites like this remain strong and keep growing.
We could actually really use some more support - it's been really slow lately and I'm getting a bit nervous. May try to throw together a more organized campaign in the next week or two, but for now I'd love it if you'd join or share.
I think a lot of cis liberals in this country are too privileged to understand. We are fighting for our lives. Bigoted Democrats are an existential threat. Do not lecture us on "purity politics." Tell me if you'd be okay voting for someone who wants to segregate you.
Colorado. Michigan. 28 Democratic party elected officials with a national platform. Anti-trans ads being run by democrats. Ohio Dems censoring its LGBTQ+ caucus. South Carolina dems voting en masse for anti-trans policies. Never think what happened to UK Labour can't happen here.
The cis hysteria over trans people existing claims another victim. This time it is a high school play that I'm sure would have been a really nice thing for everyone involved.
A girl won the role of Seymour in South Grand Prairie High School in Texas. Then, the district freaked out because of Texas' anti-trans and anti-gay law. So they tried to strip her role and give it to a boy. She refused, so now they are cancelling the play. Subscribe to support our journalism.
If I knew my doctor was going to treat me like a man and make me use male facilities, I'd stay the hell away from her. Also, it would just be stupid, cruel, and probably malpractice to do so, as my body phenotype is female at this point, and no one has called me a male for years . . .
I have already heard from trans constituents who are avoiding essential NHS screening and treatment for fear of being treated without respect and dignity. Ministers told me: “the revised guidance will support the privacy, dignity and safety of all patients” How exactly does this do that?
omg, this is real narcissistic sociopath levels of behavior
...and the damage it did to all trans people - that ONLY genes determined sex, that every other change was tainted by some kind of original sin. Dr John Randell, notorious for making his patients repeat after him that they would always be 'mutilated, castrated men' before he'd allow surgery.
This is a great thread. I want to add that anything other than self-ID inevitably leads to trans people being having to get the permission of doctors and/or therapists to get proper ID and legal recognition, which is absurd, demeaning, and unfairly costing trans people lots of time and money.
This thread is about the UK and specifically the guidelines around hospital stays that are making untenable situations for trans people based on the absurd idea that the mere presence of a trans patient on a single sex ward harms the cis patients. However, I wanted to share some broader thoughts.
