the worst part of this PHP thing is having to explain, individually, to every client, one at a time, that yes: we are aware of the issue and fixed it before you knew about it yes: we upgraded as soon as the fix was available yes: your data is safe

better to be a dog in times of tranquility, than a human in times of chaos. these are interesting times...

isn't that basically just what a datauri is?

This is really, really cool. The URL *is* the document. So you can effectively do word processing in your browser... without it leaving your computer. Or... you can send it to others *in the URL*. This is really fantastic.

my EV was 3 years old yesterday. got its third service last week. the battery is no longer at 100% health. it's at 99%. at this rate I might need to replace it in 300 years. seems like the doom-and-gloom people were right after all. in other news, last year they changed an air filter

I don't really look for these things, but somehow keep finding them. another signed autobiography. this time Leonard Nimoy's

weather can'd decide whether it's raining or sunny, so we end up with this view outside my front door. completely clear sunny skies behind the house, heavy rains at front leaving the perfect conditions for this magical quantum demonstration

while sorting through a pile of about a thousand books which I got (free!) from someone that was doing a house-clearance, deciding which to keep, this one looked at me, all judgy-like. why yes, I *do* have a few too many books. and what about it?

glass for my greenhouse has been paid for, so now I need to a way to clip the double-glazed panels onto the angle iron. designed and printed a prototype. next step is to stress test the design to withstand storm pressure- up to 150kg for the largest panels, I calculate.

upgraded from the Creality Ender 3 printer to an Elegoo Centauri Carbon. it was astonishing how many ways it is better. autoleveling, builtin wifi and camera, enclosure, higher temp hardened nozzle supporting ABS/others and carbon/glass fibre filaments, CoreXY speed, ...and more!

Bronwyn: you're not working today me: [got more done yesterday than most weekdays] *blinks* B: there's a car boot sale in Dundalk and another in Longford me: they're hours of driving in different directions B: we could do one then the other me: ...no B: me: okay - shoes on, let's go to Longford.

it's gray and wet, I'm stuck 9 hours a day in a shed with no human contact, in a body which feels both too hot and too cold. I wish I could just sleep through winter and emerge when it's not so shit. ...but I have major depressive disorder, so maybe it's just me and I should just get on with it.

"News that is sufficiently bad somehow carries its own guarantee of truth. Only good reports need confirmation." Breaking Strain, Arthur C. Clarke

I read A.M. Low's Adrift In The Stratosphere (1937) so you don't have to. you're welcome. shockingly bad sci-fi from someone who should've known better - the inventor of radio-guided airplanes (drones), and a founding member of the British Interplanetary Society. www.facebook.com/share/p/1DrY...

the world is on fire, and my cat just died. finding it hard to concentrate on the final two chapters of my book right now.

retitled my book to "The Paths Most Travelled" it refers to quantum immortality survival involving following the most probable non-fatal paths in a branching timeline. sounds complex, but that's why there's a whole book, and not just a post. www.wattpad.com/story/403464...

3 hours diagnosing why @bronwyn-verens.bsky.social 's laptop was offline. a CAT6 cable, opposite end of the house, had rotted because a mis-placed screw had destroyed the sheathing on a single wire in the cable. that cable worked fine for ten years. pictured: tools it took to find and fix this...

spent all day installing Linux (Fedora 43) on three ancient laptops. it took that long because I couldn't find my USB sticks so was resorting to SD cards + adaptors, which are notoriously unreliable... eventually found a stick, and everything was much easier after that. now: networking, then Ceph

had to think of a reason why my protagonist would lose all his money in the early 1700s, and be able to gamble it back, and lo! history provides me with the South Sea Bubble, and the creation of the English State Lottery.

chapter 6: India bit longer than usual, and it my head hurts trying to make sure nothing I wrote contradicted what Indian philosophy (what I could understand of it). it's been a slow-burn, but Tom now has an explanation, even if it's a damned weird one. www.wattpad.com/1594762449-p... #booksky

today's writing fun: trying to explain quantum immortality, through the eyes of a 16th century Gujarati scholar, using Advaita Vedanta and the Puranas as the base for it. fun. sometimes I wonder how far I can go before someone says "waait a minute..." and points at all the flaws #booksky

rewrote chap.2 to be in same 1st/3rd-person mix that I wrote the rest of the chapters in. a reader said it's silly that Orla&Liam went home at the end of the chapter. when you read it, it's short, but writing it... it felt like it should be longer! fixed it #booksky www.wattpad.com/myworks/4034...

rewrote chapter 1. I think I'm finding my voice now. the first chapter or two, the plot was vaguely there in the periphery of my mind, but I think it's coming clearer now to me. the more I write, the more I find I need to rewrite. www.wattpad.com/1585976257-p... #booksky

rewrote chapter 2 of my book. I realised that the "apple trick" was a little too unlikely - a chance of about 1x10^(-10^40) in the lifetime of the universe. so I replaced it with a more likely "dice trick" and thought of a lovely little sub-plot involving religious fanatics. this will be fun.

I made a bunch of onion bhajis and ate them all and feel like there are some lessons I need to learn before I do it again ... ...which I will definitely do

used an infrared camera earlier yesterday to find a cold spot in my shed, insulated it, and now it's 25C in the shed with just my computer and a dehumidifier running. I might have over-insulated this thing

every time I upgrade Fedora, I have to spend a day hammering at it to get it to boot into the new system. it's *alway* because of Nvidia. do they not test with Nvidia hardware in RedHat/Fedora before they encourage the entire world to upgrade?

cholesterol's a bit high. I don't drink or smoke, I'm vegan, and I'm in the gym at least once per week. what other sacrifice does the universe demand from me this time? ... gave up cheese when I went vegan. looks like I also need to give up vegan cheese.

I have most of a plot for a gothic book. not quite horror, not quite sci-fi. unfortunately the central concept is quantum immortality, which is hard to explain to people. oh well. the idea is stuck in my head. let's see what happens when I start writing...

went looking for deer in Dartry forest. couldn't find them, but could hear them shouting from miles away. I think they've been eating some pretty suspect mushrooms...
