My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today. Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s ‘sleight of hand’ -It’s ‘bated breath’ -It’s ‘lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s ‘brass tacks’ -It’s ‘free rein’ -It’s ‘toe the line'

Writing a fantasy story that moves between the past and the present in this one village and I might be getting a little obsessed with the various genealogical histories of these families.

I know America. I know that, in America, we believe in a country big enough for all of us. So, JD Vance, don't you dare come from Ohio to lecture me. You don't know a damn thing about America.

you can't be serious. This reads Meta/Facebook/Insta is looking to grant itself the rights to scrape websites across the open web - and train Meta's AI - if a company after Oct 30, 2026 uses Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp or other Meta services. So every biz. Read that again. Outrageous. 1/5

Haunted Hotel season 2 is very funny so far, but we were not expecting the multiple feels of the "Ghost Day Out" episode. The horror genre jokes are great, but the storytelling and character building really make the show.

My alma mater just sent out an email saying they're making all the students do AI now and I should give them money so they can make all the students do AI. I unsubscribed instead. So much for liberal arts values. 🪦

Tax billionaire wealth. I frankly don't care if a billionaire can make a second billion. I'd rather have the average person be able to make their first $100k.

"Medieval" gets to the heart of the Evangelical right wing mindset perfectly. I think about that a lot, actually.

Ossoff: "I think Pete Hegseth is frankly a deeply unwell person who seems to relish this kind of brutality all the while he's running a department that is falling into chaos. The guy cannot run the military competently and is spending his time with this kind of obscene medieval spectacle."

Higher ed leaders are doing "decline of public trust" discourse in order to avoid talking about all the things they've done to undermine their institutions, including exploiting contingent faculty labor, attacking student protest, and underfunding the humanities

Okay, so the lifetime learners (all 65+ and several 80+) want to learn about memes and modern social media tomorrow. Show me your favorites in case I've left them off my list.

Took a trio of Zoomers on an adventure today - we hit Unclaimed Baggage (hi, Hoggle!), a retro soda fountain (caramel apple crisp ice cream OMG), and the bizarre but fascinating Patches Merchant Emporium (I see you, lady who makes terrifying recycled doll parts art).

Explained fan culture and cosplay to my lifetime learners today. We talked about sports, music, popular media, religion, and politics satisfying the same desires for community, spectacle, and expression that give meaning to people's lives. (Also cosplay videos!)

Unexpected twist in the popular culture class - I asked them what they want me to talk about next week, and this sweet octogenarian says, "I was at a hotel in Chicago and they were having one of those comics... comic cons? It was wild. Can you talk about that?" Oh, yes, dear lady, I certainly can.

First day of my lifetime learning class about Popular Culture Studies. Taking a broad, introductory approach to the subject since most of my regulars said they don't know what I'm talking about. Today I'll ask them about all the cultures THEY belong to and like.

OPINION: "A longing for “digital detox” is a part of why print books are Gen Z’s top preferred reading format. Perhaps that’s because printed books don’t ping or track you. …These physical qualities actually make books more alluring than they were in the days before the internet," the authors write.

mississippifreepress.orgOpinion | Gen Z Reading Habits Aren’t Dying. They’re Changing.Kathi Inman Berens and Rachel Noorda write that Gen Z reading habits are including more digital platforms than ever before.

I already disliked Buc-ee's and refused to go, but this doesn't improve my opinion of them (and I'd have to drive a long way to get to a blue state).
