People gather in Council Chambers in their bike helmets to draw attention to how our safety and that of all residents, particularly seniors and kids, is threatened by the staff report under consideration today. #bikehfx

We hope Councillors will not pretend they are making a decision based on cost alone - because the report repeatedly and clearly sets out why the alternative routes will be "non-AAA" Would we approve a product design that is unsafe for children? Would we build an unsafe building for children?

Ended the 2026 #KidicalmassHFX season off with a successful Halloween themed ride today! Always a pleasure to see so many happy folks cycling together. (We had a furry friend cross the street mid-ride through the crowd this go around; wish I had gotten a pic of the kitty!)

They did some utility work at Columbus and Isleville, and ended up replacing the intersection a half inch higher than it was before…. Halifax’s first raised intersection is coming closer to reality!

Given this is a transportation issue, we question why this key report was not presented to the Transportation Standing Committee first, where public participation is permitted - their meeting last week was cancelled due to a light agenda. Downgrading AAA facilities must have public scrutiny & input

At this stage it is being reviewed tomorrow by our Active Transportation Advisory Committee with a view to it recommending our Transportation Standing Committee adopt it. At that later stage when it is reviewed by Councillors, wider public support will be needed.

The Traffic Safety Act and Regulations are in force from today, some key issues and questions here

The new Nova Scotia Traffic Safety Act & Regulations is an improvement on the outdated MVA but gaps & contradictions remain that could threaten implementation, interpretation & impact. Read our media release & submission for our assessment from a #VisionZero lens #NSPoli

4/ Some archaic cyclist laws have not changed: - Yielding distance still just 1 metre for drivers - Cyclists must ride single file in a group - No Stop = yield law (Idaho stop) - Cyclist must use a bike lane or face a fine - No riding over crosswalks

2/ A Municipal Traffic Authority can set speed limits of 80 km/h or less on municipal roads, including limits below 50 km/h. That power in HRM is with Roddy MacIntyre, the Traffic Authority. Councillors do not have that power. 311 your speed limit reduction request, attn Roddy

We do not agree that more research is needed. The speeding problem in Nova Scotia is systemic, cultural, harmful and must be addressed with established proven technology
