I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Another wasted opportunity for changing the electoral system, now we’re paying the price. Change the voting system by law for 1-2 voting cycles with a referendum at the end to keep it or go back to fptp. Now I have to vote Green because the Eby NDP wasn’t very NDP and the Cons are gonna win anyway.

At least $50 billion for another pipeline. $82 billion in new military spending in 5 years. $300 billion in corporate welfare and mega incentives at an investment summit. But the cupboard is bare for Parks Canada.

2,671 PSAC members at Parks Canada received notice this week that their positions may be cut. These cuts put our environment, natural and cultural heritage, parks, and national historic sites at risk. psacunion.ca/psac-raises-...

This is 0% surprising. Look, humans are actually ASTOUNDINGLY efficient at doing these things, it's just that we work on human timescales. But I can turn a sandwich and coffee into a bunch of network code, and still have energy left over to do other human things.

Also, it turns out that LLMs are great at writing code and not so good at producing SOFTWARE. The key distinction being that software is a thing you can use, and (compiling) code is just an arbitrary assemblage of text that may or may not do what you want. arstechnica.com/ai/2026/10/a...

I'm actually not that anthropocentric--I don't think the humans are the bestest most unique thing in the universe. But biological life is really remarkable in its efficiency, and that includes us. And surely, that's no wonder--that's what evolution is going to select for.

An LLM could probably crank out the same code much faster, but I would still have to review it, and the energy costs would be SO MUCH higher in the end. This has actually been well established by multi-BILLION dollar companies burning through tokens.

I am now a podcaster, apparently. And I'll be on the radio!

For some reason, I find it overwhelmingly annoying that Frechette is taking full responsibility for the fall of the CAQ. Lady, the only responsibility you bear is thinking that Legault was a leader worth following with ideas worth listening to. www.cbc.ca/player/play/...

...people still don't have doctors, lease transfers aren't allowed in the same way anymore, so now rents are going up. The problem was that you made people lives materially worse, not that you somehow fucked up the transition. Throw Legault under the bus, because that's where he belongs.

Now, if you've got the same dumbshit ideas as him, you're a racist and islamaphobe the same as him, sure, GTFO. But you're not responsible for the fall of the CAQ, the CAQ was just a terrible government and even Quebeckers can only take so much.

That out-of-touch millionaire only made it into office because Quebeckers are so desperate for a mostly non-corrupt government, they'll give practically anyone a try. But your dumb party found the limits of Quebec's xenophobia and the taxes were still high, the roads are still falling apart...

I was looking in the Penticton subreddit and everyone there, to my surprise, was deciding to vote for the Greens. They wouldn't vote for Boultbee (who ended up resigning anyway) and none of them would vote for the Con candidate. I don't think the Greens have even ANNOUNCED their candidate yet.

To the extent that I have any strong opinions about cars, I now believe that it’s impossible for a luxury car to have a petrol engine. I don’t care how much leather is in it, even an inexpensive EV is going to be a better experience.

Nothing makes me dislike Generative AI more than the true believers that think it’s the solution to all problems and uncritically use it as a citation. It is not a primary source. You want to use it to surface links to papers because Google sucks now? Fine. But chatGPT isn’t a source itself, dummy.

I'm proud of these shots. I got them while riding one evening while the air was still good. The Bald Range forest fire was still out of control at that point, sometime last week. For real, this time.

@ass.golf Hey, I just wanted to say that, as a professional game developer of 25 years, I have never heard a better title for a game than 'Colossal Urine King: Revelations'.

2/2 It’s long past time to cancel the Canada-Israel free trade agreement, issue sanctions, and use every diplomatic tool at our disposal to rein in this rogue state. Anything less is a green light for Israel to continue killing civilians with impunity.

Of course. Who needs a conservative party when Carney is the most successful conservative prime minister in the last 30 years? CPC voters are switching to the Liberals and the Libs that care about the environment and social programs and other humans are drifting to the NDP as they realize the dupe.

Factually, I own the roads as much as any car does, whether they like it or not. The deference chain works by weight+speed class: motor vehicle yields to bicycle yields to pedestrian. I paid just as much for those roads and my impact on them is far, far less, so I am owed more.

[redacted person who does not know whose mentions they wandered into]: In my city, the cyclists are so entitled, they act like they own the roads. Me: LET THE BIKES OWN THE ROADS. THE BIKES ARE FAR LESS DANGEROUS AND POLLUTING BY ABSOLUTELY EVERY MEASURE. MAKE THE CARS PAY TOLLS TO THE CYCLISTS.

I know reality is far less kind; but it is worth remembering that cars are merely a conveyance, and a city with no people is not a city, but a city with no cars is actually ideal. Everyone hates cars, even drivers. That's why they live out of town, to get away from the other cars!

Nearby towns have evacuated. Currently hosting 2 cats in a spare bathroom until their human can collect them and take them to another friend’s house with her. Air filters are running hard. Cat carriers and emergency bags on standby just in case.

The story of the Nakba needs to be told. It’s a hard history to confront: Israel’s independence was achieved with massacres, ethnic cleansing, and the forcible displacement of over 750,000 Palestinians.
