I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Omg I hope people listen to you. I've been telling them this for years but they're addicted to the outrage and pretending it's "activism". They've made a hobby of obsessing over every little thing the right says and does - numerous accounts have even become quite wealthy doing it. It's embarrassing.

Agreed. Stop feeding the rage bait and start investing in each other. Mutual aid is vital because our communities need support beyond election season. We can ignore their noise and amplify our people, but we also have to make sure nobody is left to survive alone. To support black trans survival:

The most dangerous phase of a digital democracy is when the algorithm stops being a mirror and starts being a megaphone. Brazil is the beta test; the US is the global rollout. Hope the patch notes are helpful.

Here is an example of how effective this campaign was on educating people about the social media algorithm. The account in the print is not related to Janones, but it is following what he taught us over the past 2 weeks. Only two weeks. Organizing online is key. Translation in the ALT

Exactly. No good comes from engaging with conservatives, Republicans, the far right. They're insincere interlocutors who are only out there to lie, gaslight, do fire hose of lies, grift, con. It's not real discourse. Just cancel them. Anything real will be said also be good people talking normally.

Yep! A time-honored tradition of Bluesky since the beginning. Bad Faith accounts and Trolls like those are only looking for attention—good OR bad. The best way to react is to not respond, quietly isolate them, and starve them of their social media oxygen. "Block Early. Block Often. Do Not Engage."

SteveMND@stevemnd.bsky.social

Yep. "Block Early, Block Often, Do Not Engage," is the unofficial mantra of Bluesky when it comes to dealing with Bad Actors and Trolls, and it only works properly when everyone is making sure said troublemakers are starved of the precious attention they are trying to drag out of people.

- Do not engage far right - Mobilize, do not fear them - Organize to help people go voting: offer a ride, a help with kids while they vote, anything - Mass produce and engage your own political contents, organize groups for online engagement so you can overcome META's / X's algorithym

Also: take to the streets. On the very next day to the first round - where we ended up second - public college students took the streets in support of Lula and against Flávio Bolsonaro. That sparked a wave of movements across the country. Movement and joy is key (also a little bit of anger).

Mamdani has managed to united disparate groups under the grand banner of "New Yorkers" with plenty of positivity and positive concrete changes (potholes pun intended). Mamdani makes it look easy. El-Sayed of Michigan seems to have potential for similar positive changes.

Yes, 100%, but I found that once you are drilled into the mindset and see it as a collective mission you’re fighting among like-minded people, it becomes easier. To give the far-right a platform would be betraying a sort of collective oath to let them rot into ostracism.

The main lesson we learned was TO NOT ENGAGE with far right online, and to amplify news links and social media profiles aligned to our cause. Rage reposting only amplifies their side of the story, while ignoring them makes their message stay inside their bubble. DO. NOT. ENGAGE.

I don't like to leave bigotry unchallenged but I find just calling it out as ragebait and moving on without engaging in their talking points is quite effective.

This has been the Bluesky mantra since the beginning, as well. Not everyone follows it but the collective effect seems to make a difference in the general vibe around here. Which is to say, it's good advice!

This is why the far right has to own the media platforms. If they didn't, very very few people would have anything to do with their nonsense. They'd find themselves cancelled and removed from polite society.

Some in the British media seem to need to know this. All the middle class journos seem to love the far right... ...I wonder why....? Asking for all my working class 💪 friends & family.

When on twitter don’t block, just mute. They get off on being blocked but don’t see the mute and get no credit for views/ impressions or whatever.

I got kicked off Xitter for being anti-Zionist.🤷‍♂️ Don't engage with right-wingers and definitely don't sink to their level with rage baiting. But ignoring them isn't best either. Fact check them. When they post nonsense, don't engage directly, just post the actual facts, preferably with sources.

After the first round elections, Congressman André Janones created a WhatsApp channel titled “Lula’s Army.” It ballooned to 10 million people following his commands on how to behave online to counteract Meta’s far-right-favouring algorithms. The right knows how to use socials. We must learn, too.

As others are noting WhatsApp is a Meta platform, so its heavy use in LatAm (I travel there and have used it) concerns me. I’m delighted it worked here, but this seems like another Starlink-type problem. Would love to see LatAm governments develop a competitor.

Yes but I would strongly advise using Signal messenger or other secure communications next time Whatsapp is a part of META so Zuckerberg now has access to all that info from 10 million users He could actually give that to Bolsonaro who may use it to try and annul the election results. I pray not!

WhatsApp is extremely deeply embedded in daily life in Brazil (as in many other countries). Avoiding it for opsec and optics is theoretically sound but would never have worked.

I love signal, but people here in Brasil do not use it. Literally everyone in the country has whatsapp. Entire companies organize through whatsapp. Whatsapp isn't a messaging app, it's THE mais way most people talk to each other online. "Lula's Army" would not exist in signal

Playing with fire to rely on WhatsApp. Once Zuck thinks he can muck that up for those opposing his fascist allies without getting caught, he will. Probably a slow boil. Meta is poison.

Some ground rules that have helped us: - Go outside your bubble, try new social media channels - Don’t underestimate the power of WhatsApp (although less so in the U.S.) - Post on the Instagram grid, not just stories - Watch every Instagram video until the end before sharing - IGNORE THEM

Such a WhatsApp channel would be declared terrorist propaganda and shutdown in the US. Thank god there is only 1 round of voting in most states. We appreciate the other tips.

I don't use the other social media chanels. I know this site is a left leaning bubble but unlike other sites it doesn't push rancid opposing views in your face to provoke responses. Twitter became an absolute sewer following Musk's acquisition.

His name is musk after all. What I do not understand is most people think he is a genius inventor two things he is not. He is clearly not smart just listen to him talk. He also never incented anything but he has invested.

the thing that kind of makes me wonder, though, is on twitter, if you saw rancid ass sewer takes, you'd mouse over the person and go "oh. yeah that tracks" and block and move on on *here* i have regular "person i respect posted a take i extremely fucking don't" existential crises.

I haven’t posted on Twitter since Musk joined Trump’s government but I kept my account there to have access to real-time intel on what’s happening in Brazil and, in that sense, it is still useful. But very much a cesspit of hatred and the breeding ground for those algorithm-chasers on the right.

I just don’t think it’s ethical or wise to be on any Meta product in a personal capacity. They’re pushing AI, it’s been shown said AI will happily absorb all your texts if you let it. If we’re treating it as needed for political engagement, there need to be guides on insulating your privacy.

It is to this day. Even worse. He’s shamelessly turned it into his personal fascist megaphone, complete with bullshit, lies and propaganda. Muskism threatens planet earth. I won’t get into the millions of deaths he’s caused from shuttering USAid and all the right-wing conspiracies he promulgates.

Bro, we brazilians stormed X. Following Janones directions, we put all of our hashtags on the trending topics Don't interact with the far right. Organize and mobilize, that's the key Ignore them, let them talk to their bubble They only talk to people outside the bubble when we amplify what they say

I managed my timeline fine with strict "algorithm discipline". Block "I don't want to see this -> not relevant" Block, mute + don't engage. Worked even after they removed editing your topics. It didn't offset the artificial boosting of the right and suppressing of the left tho.

I believe this is about changing what the not-so-politically-engaged general public sees in their social media feeds by putting a collective thumb on the scales of the algorithm. And to do that, you need to be where those people are.

You're right, this is the beginning of a path to successfully overturning so much disinformation. The tide of discourse - how would you define that practically speaking, for social media? Can we target it directly? Gathering teachers as you mention - great! Make counter-disinfo handbooks too.

Great to know there was method to Lula's winning - we need the Left-ish to understand the power of such coordination. Were there specifics to how meta's rightwing propaganda was countered? Does the average person not engage, but there intended, repeated true messages counter? Congratulations!🥂

Thos sounds amazing. Do you know of someone who has destilled the content into a manual or something, which we could use here in the EU?

What if there was an app that you could use to automatically push your selected BlueSky skeets out onto other social media platforms, without actually exposing you to READING those other platforms? Or even receiving notifications that someone responded.

I think the lesson here is forget about left/right etc. Go for this. ‘Hey do you hate this dictator?’ You do? Ok let’s join forces. No wasting time infighting. No fighting or feeding trolls. Don’t reward Doomerism. Use your side and the extras from the other side to win. Can’t do it alone etc.

That’s not the forces I’m joining. It’s parts like this. They said forget the traditional politics, just ask humans if they are humans, and if they say no, then Move on. Don’t feed trolls/fascist as we don’t have billionaire backers, instead boost good content yourself etc. Practical 4 good reasons

I wasn’t trying to find a middle ground. The forget left & right worked for them for their situation. They used that tactic for their situation. You don’t copy that tactic directly, you copy why they used that tactic for their situation if you can apply that to yours. Or else you find something else

This is some hysterical rubbish. If you want to wallow in self pity, do so, but pretending that MAGA and liberals are equally bigoted just makes you look stupid.

How about “Hey, let’s fight to protect and increase the human rights of all people”? Because we’ve watched for ten years that not all people who oppose Trump are our allies.

Yes, there is not much point to join forces for only a few moments long enough to win and then fall apart after. Many anti trumpers are still anti other things too and not in a good way. Brazil’s left seemed to take that into account and go ok not that one then, move on, no feeding them though.

It’s literally why I’m here. A lot of people said they would leave Xshitter and Threads but couldn’t handle the lack of attention over here. I didn’t look back. ✊🏼

Yep. Same. And I have way more followers here after less than two years than I had at TwiX. I did (deeply) regret leaving the wonderful, very active animal-rescue group of awesome folks at TwiX. A few are here now, but the group here is still tiny compared with the one there.

On FB I post few all caps posts that most of posts are Putin bots.As soon as I do, there are none/very few new posts. If I post Putin bot under each nasty comment, almost none respond,bc they ARE a bot. Suddenly,it changes convo on post It's effective in shutting down these flood of Putin bot posts

There are entire "journalistic" careers built on doing only this and it's a major reason we find ourselves in the situation we're in

VERY good advice. We can instead talk about the country we want, the government we need. Healthcare, education, system reform. What ideas do you have? What leaders espouse our values and beliefs?

Honestly, one thing I've been seeing more of, is so much more disingenuous right wing trolls, either a real person or a bot, who I think is more or less trying to get us to waste our energy. Focus on the people who seem real. If they look far right, or claim to be liberal but talk right, ignore.

I really loved seeing him kissing Erika Hilton on the cheek in celebration. Dems should take note that embracing and celebrating and loving their trans community is better than throwing them under the bus during your campaigns (Acton, Turek, Hamilton, Kaptur, etc).

Erika Hilton was also the author for Lula's biggest labor win, changing the work hours allowed for service workers in Brazil from Max of 48 hours a week to 40. So she was a central piece to his win from a legislative pov as well

Dem gamerboy keyboard warrior influencer era and dad let mommy fight for them since Reagan brought Christian Coalition into the Oval Office in according to woke stats & my old ex Greenpeace Activist eyes Write about dat

100% correct! I was at an event last night, liberals, red diaper babies, and was stunned at the headlines-only understanding of current events, and "gloomism". It was left-wing maga thinking. Even if people vote against authoritarianism. They need to understand BUILDING for the better. choose love

We did something. On social media platforms, we wouldn't comment on or respond to anything posted by the far right. Second, we clarified that the far right is not the same as the traditional right—

we highlighted the differences and explained that voting for Lula, who is on the left (I’d say center-left), doesn't make anyone leftist. We were fighting for democracy, and that was the most important point.
