FIRST MIX OF 2025 FAVES! Mapping out a field of indie pop, art pop, and folk-leaning tracks that foreground melody, lyricism, and songcraft. Music of beauty and immediacy. #mixcloud @mixcloud.bsky.social #bestof2025 #indiefolk #indiepop #artrock www.mixcloud.com/Vodem/the-ma...

#FridayNightJam From Blossom Dearie's 1966 album "Blossom Time at Ronnie Scott's" (which is a club in London). Written by Dave Frishberg, a great songwriter and writer of several Schoolhouse Rock songs -- and Blossom also sang some of those! #music #blossomdearie #davefrishberg #schoolhouserock

This is really unfair to everyone who just voted for him for the racism.

Can we talk about this in a per-month metric? I think it might be easier for folks to internalize. It's like having a new $316 bill every single month. That's a lot of groceries.

This is a real exchange I just had:

Friday night jam! R.I.P. Michael Hurley, the charming sometimes called “Godfather of freak folk” who died, appropriately enough, on April Fools’ Day in Portland, Oregon. #Fridaynightjam #music #michaelhurley #freakfolk

NYU canceled a planned speech by the former president of Doctors Without Borders because she planned to discuss the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and cuts to US AID. This is what actual campus censorship looks like.

I see a future in which the oceans are patrolled by shark-riding octopuses… #octopus #shark #sharktopus

Seen in San Francisco today. Good call on the bumper sticker!

#fridaynightjam Hamlet Minassian was an Iranian musician of Armenian descent. This track is from an an album released in 1980, recorded in Iran during the last moments before the 1979 revolution. It’s fun and unique cheesy synth pop music. #music #armenianpop #armenia

#fridaynightjam Not how it went down today, but in this 1977 track Fela Kuti counsels against political compromises that hurt the vulnerable: "I no go agree make my brother hungry ... I no go agree make my brother homeless ... No agreement today, no agreement tomorrow.” #music #felakuti #resist

In a world of Matts, be a Derek.

#fridaynightjam Nils Lofgren, founder of the band Grin, sometimes player for Crazy Horse, and longtime guitarist for the E Street Band. This song, off Lofgren’s 1975 first solo record, was written by Gerry Goffin and Carole King in 1966 and also recorded by Dusty Springfield and The Byrds. #music

Conan: You know, Anora is having a good night. That's great news. Two wins already. I guess Americans are excited to see somebody finally stand up to a powerful Russian.

Disappointed at the lack of fiery anti-authoritarianism at the Oscars. The dual speeches for No Other Land were great. I appreciated Adrien Brody’s comments, but it’s unfortunate they came at the end of such a mess of a speech. I liked Conan’s “standing up to a powerful Russian” line.

#FridayNightJam Roberta Flack died on Monday, R.I.P. She was a pianist and vocalist of uncommon expressiveness. This lyrically direct track from her 1969 debut is appropriate, in this moment of transparent moral failures dressed up in false complexity. #music #robertaflack

Here’s my final mix of 2024 music -- 24 pop tracks (pop, indie pop, art pop, synth-pop, neo-soul, indietronica, etc.) that should have been all over mainstream media but weren't. This is by far the MOST ACCESSIBLE of my 2024 mixes. #music #bestof2024 #pop #indiepop #neosoul #synthpop #indietronica

It's nice to see, but honestly, this was "news" in 2015.

Friday Night Jam! I love it when I discover the original of a song I didn’t consciously realize was a cover. I previously only knew this 1965 song written and performed by English pop singer Twinkle from the cover by The Smiths. #fridaynightjam #music #rwinkle #thesmiths #goldenlights #coversongs

2024 MUSIC MIX #8: AVANT GARDE AND EXPERIMENTAL AMBIENT FAVORITES Confusing times call for confusing music... 22 favorite 2024 avant garde and experimental ambient tracks. #music #bestof2024 #avantgarde #ambient #experimentalmusic #musicmix www.mixcloud.com/Vodem/glass-...

A powerful insight from Neil Postman’s 1985 “Amusing Ourselves to Death” that applies to all “educational” kids’ tv, and helps explain why Americans lack critical reasoning skills today: “We now know that Sesame Street encourages children to love school only of school is like Sesame Street.”

The Substance is an interesting double feature with Andrzej Zulawski‘s Possession (1981) — similar body horror, virtuosic tortured acting, and some overlapping psychological themes. If you loved The Substance, I recommend Possession. #movies #thesubstance #possession #horror #bodyhorror #movie

Tesla paid $0 in federal income tax last year. 2022: $0 2021: $0 2020: $0 2019: $0 2018: $0 Tesla reported $6.7 billion in profit in those years.

"The whole country is at the mercy of conceited twenty-something computer science dipshits as they get a remedial crash course in government, learning the kinds of things that college freshman in political science 101 are expected already to know."

#FridayNightJam! We could use some silliness and so here's Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention's satire of San Francisco in its hippie heyday. The Summer of Love was in 1967, so this 1968 track was a very contemporary vivisection of the flower power scene! #music open.spotify.com/track/7nRQVI...

Actually, no. This misses the point of Jesus's Parable of the Good Samaritan (Lk 10: 25-37). After Jesus tells a lawyer that you should "love your neighbor as yourself," the lawyer asks him, "And who is my neighbor?"

2024 MUSIC MIX #5: INDIE ROCK AND PUNK FAVORITES This mix spans a spectrum of 2024's rough and noisy, rousing and melodic choice cuts, mostly off all the radars. www.mixcloud.com/Vodem/lost-d... #music #2024bestmusic #musicmix #bestof2024 #punk #indierock #artpunk @mixcloud.bsky.social

Last year, I found and fell in love with the song “Cannock Chase” by @labisiffre.bsky.social. I love it so much I wrote a blog post about it.

Straight white dudes: “I just don’t feel valued, appreciated, seen, and respected. I don’t see a lot of opportunities. And I don’t get to say what I really want to say.” Women, people of color, LGBTQs: “Welcome to the party, bitches.”

2024 MUSIC MIX #3: ART SYNTH POP FAVORITES 21 "art" or "indie" synth tracks, some poppier, some artsier, some manifesting a neo-new-wave or neo-post-punk vibe, most in English, French, or German. #music #2024bestmusic #musicmix #bestof2024 #synthpop #artpop www.mixcloud.com/Vodem/omens-...
