Kind of a weak version? Old school anti-communist domino theory basically held that once the reaction started, it couldn't be stopped without outside intervention. I think democracy is more resilient than that, but that strongman authoritarians do see (sometimes) that they have a shared interest.

Whenever Moscow conquers a country, it is impoverished, polluted and destroyed. This is what happened to Estonia's economy (compared to Finland) during the USSR. Estonia was wealthier than Finland in 1938, the Soviet occupation (1944-1991) turned it 10 times poorer. Since freedom it's back on track.
