when i was a kid, my first inkling that games could be something besides arcade classics like pacman, tetris, and mortal kombat, was finding the Tiberian Sun manual, 56 pages of lore and unit descriptions abandoned at a chinese restaurant as no one wanted it, they left me take it

On May 2nd 2011 Seal Team Six raided Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. Among the more curious items recovered by the operatives was an unofficial GameSpot guide for Command & Conquer: Tiberian Sun, a 1999 strategy game. Video link: youtu.be/deFLXte3MRA?...

Ruthenian Culture Research Unit examines the career of two writers from Kharkiv who worked on a Soviet Fallout 3 clone, a WW2 RTS, dabbled in erotic fantasy, wrote STALKER novels and time-travel fiction… This is a tour of 2005-2015 Eastern Evropean culture. Link: youtu.be/PfLEVnTqIxw

The recent surprise sequel to NWN1 made me wonder how well the new generation of Neverwinter expansions is selling—I’m guessing not well, considering the lack of reviews. But they can't be very expensive to make, so

Mutants Rising looks good—and it seems like it has a high chance of actually being released. This is a direct Fallout 2 sequel that’s been in development longer than many of you have been alive.

The Tangut Prophecy was a Chinese historical RPG built on the FOnline engine, set in 1167. Like many projects on this engine, it was abandoned. Is there even a single completed game made with FOnline?

First person Fallouts are very labor-intensive to make. A major benefit of developing in classic Fallout is that small teams (or even solo developers) can create full-scale games. The downside is that the audience will be just as tiny.

Picture 1: Anvil, remade in Morrowind Picture 2: Imperial City concept art Pictures 3 and 4: the island of Stirk remade in the Abecean Shores Expansion Morrowind looks insanely good (But only on stills, the animations are quite bad)

Note that you DO NOT need to “grind levels” on the island before exploring new content. Almost everything in Project Tamriel and Tamriel Rebuilt is made with low- and mid-level characters in mind.

A board game from Issue 1, 1994, of Krokodil magazine. Pick your career path: red for a presidential career, blue for a banker, green for a crime lord. Classic 90s psychotronic slop bucket aesthetic.

People think inventory friction is bad, but as with other forms of friction (e.g. walking, sex), it's only bad when it's too much or not enough.
