still working with computers. to my frustration. User choice and consent-based system design matters. Local-first software is always superior. Updates should never be forced. Reproducible, deterministic systems are the only ones that should be trusted.

This is just an objectively true thing. Whether it's good or not is up to interpretation, but the proof of capability is staggering. And anyone who wants to build other organizational structures needs to meditate on how you're going to compete with this kind of (and scale of) capability.

it continues to be staggering just how rapid this industry has built up American capital markets are fucking crazy man, this company didn't exist five years ago and now there's a mid-sized European GDP flowing through it

I don't know how to explain this but I used to doodle roughly ~this when I was ... I still had child's handwriting. 6? Lots of little notebook pages with sign fields on them and curvey lines that were an object's trajectory through the fields.

tiny neural net navigating a field of black holes to goals with some relativistic effects from the ball's pov visualized. the ball/nn also experienced time dilation so it runs slower when going faster/in a deeper gravity well.

I tried to do something in bash today* "for the portability" and Well * - starting several days ago I've I've got regrets about how I've spent my time.

Bash assoc arrays in particular... are just a miracle of insanity. There are *so* many ways a key string can get evaluated as code that I'm gobsmacked. Some are fixed in the most extremely recent bash versions. Many are not, or are apparently "not a bug". 😩

Think a lot of reason that {vibecoding obviously empowers some devs between 10x and 1000x} and yet {software industry as a whole not moving faster} is that as soon as there's two devs... It's real easy to sling "features" that cancel each other out. Fast. Without coordinating on goals.

High skill developers are also vastly at risk of jousting each other into this failmode. If you don't have a development culture of discussing user journeys and having product concept alignment that reaches down to every single dev on the team: Start working on it. Now. Yesterday, if you can.

i don't *want* to write a harness but the one that's been satisficing me so far has shipped so many mindbendingly (imo) poor choices and regressions that... i'm kinda at a threshhold.

Thinkng back to 2015 when my meta-analysis of all social media was "it's all amp and no damp...and that does not a healthy social structure make". It's now 2026, and my meta-analysis of all social media is: "it's all amp and no damp...and that does not a healthy social structure make".

I told mythos about the web PKI system with a hundred root CAs, any of which can sign any domain, and it just pointed and laughed at me and asked when the simulation would end

The reason almost no sane discussion about how to govern and how to tax exists is because when you wade in without numbers, people go "wah where's your numbers" and when you do wade in with numbers, people completely ignore you, zero likes, zero reposts, zero engagement, zero comments, nothing. 🤷

Ah! I found the tables for 2025. (Thought it was funny they wouldn't be out yet; turns out they are; the link just changed.) Here's the all-in-one national-and-local revenue + breakdown for Norway 2025: www.ssb.no/en/statbank/... in one beautiful single page!

I don't know what to do about this! I'm just sad and disappointed. Someday, humans will use the power of conversation and collective sensemaking to make the world a better place. Until then? Well. At least you can always nerdsnipe *me*. 🫡 Including about tax policy. Boring; but important.

"Walking past the King's palace to go to the Free Speech Center and discuss Social Media" is kind of an odd sentence, but one that accurately describes my day.

The future is unevenly distributed And so is an awful lot of the present, if you have the eyes to see it.

I love working in healthcare because while Terry Tao is speculating about using Lean to prove that novel chemotherapy works I am getting actual emails from my employer announcing that they've newly implemented upper and lower limits for vital sign entry to prevent errors.

Desperately want people to stop confusing "actually doing progressive income tax" and "wealth tax". One of them works. The other makes a statistically insignificant dent in either the wealthest people nor the state budget, while creating mindboggling paperwork that has poor association to reality.

I am a big fan of a large and well-funded state. I am a huge advocate for strong, well-funded, all-inclusive social safety nets. I am a staunch supporter of aggressively progressive income tax, and more corporate tax. And I oppose wealth tax, completely. It's dumb, bad at its job, and sucks.

INCIDENTALLY. If you're wondering if wealth tax generates substantial revenue for the government. **It does not.** In Norway, 2025 -- raw data: www.ssb.no/en/statbank/... -- Wealth tax contributed 1.07% of the total government revenue. It's almost completely irrelevant.

So let's "plug and chug" on that, as my highschool maths teacher used to say... Alright, in 2025, wealth tax was 1.03% of government revenue. Ah, right, let's add in the corporate as well as personal wealth tax. 1.07% of government revenue!

Wealth Tax is deeply stupid because it requires you to do accounting on a level that *no one does* While simultaneously being *deeply gameable* by the ultra wealthy who can just disguise wealth by moving it into assets that are difficult to report on. It's a regressive tax due to sheer admin faff.

The only way to implement a wealth tax is to have the state having a complete inventory of all money. Including that cash in the shoebox under your mattress. *You do not want this.* *This is not healthy for a free nation and a free people.* It inflates the state's intervention into all lives.

How much wealth do you have? Give me a number. I'll wait. Oh it's hard to say, huh? Oh it changes, huh? Okay just Dec 31st, then. Oh your retirement account should count different? Lol ok. Oh your house should count different? Lol ok Oh the billionaires bought more houses now? Huh well hey

Honestly any scifi that doesn't have this premise is just comical wrong. Even before AI, the realistic outcome would be "let me show you our Wikipedia snapshot". There IS no One savant person who builds a whole starship and knows every part of it. No person with wetware like our current, anyway.

...i think I watched some kind of horror movie with this concept as a kid, and internalized it so aggressively that it's now part of the reason I'm so utterly placid under stress that it outright annoys others. Weird things you realize about yourself while scrolling.

Something beautiful just happened on the internet: a position was posted; discussion followed; the position was updated. Communication: 🎉 ...We need our communication and sensemaking platforms to start helping disseminate the result, though. Reach of the update: unrelated to the original -> BAD.

This post is unavailable.

And lemme be supersuper clear: I'm not negging the quoted post or poster. It's literally a perfect interaction. No notes. ...but it's *the best interaction the platform supports* for updates like this. And it's *not very good*. Bluesky should intro something like ~"community notes'ing yourself".
