yashica Y16/double-x/hydrofen like a lot of fixed focus cameras, the Y16 seems to struggle at longer distances, it's much sharper in the sort of 10m range #filmphotography #undeadformatweek #16mmstill

so this evening i thought i would write a bit about 16mm and the literal poster girl of #undeadformatweek, the yashica Y16. you may have seen the recent news that the scamera outfit currently using the yashica name is planning a digicam 'inspired by' it, but this is the real deal! (photo: submin)

early models mostly took 8x10mm negatives, later minoltas (generally the most successful in 16mm) and the rollei shot 12x17mm, very nearly as large as a 110 frame. shooting 16mm still photos in 2026 is fairly uncomplicated, you will need to source 16mm cine film, and the appropriate cartridges

some of the cartridges may be suitable for 3d printing, others will not be. the Y16 cartridges in particular are complicated and fiddly, since it contains the entire film transport system. the later yashica model adopted the minolta catridge

in truth, 16mm is more a film width than a format. 110 is 16mm, but before it took over the subminiature niche there were a number of different companies offering their own 16mm formats, minolta, mamiya, yashica, rollei. many were marketed as spy cameras, though i doubt they saw such use often

unfortunately it seems there is some gunk in the film gate, those dark spots round the edge are in all of them. but overall pretty pleased, i mean the negative is 10x14mm!

so i finally submitted for wwhfpd and only in doing that did i clock that, in spite of how many cameras i used, all 3 entries were shot with the repo-s, what a good lil camera

I have just published a piece that is very important to me. It's about why so many "progressives" and people on "the left" are lying to us right now about crime, safety, and repression, and what we should be doing instead. equalityalec.substack.com/p/why-is-eve...

equalityalec.substack.comWhy is everyone lying? What do Malcolm Gladwell, far right propagandists, Democratic politicians, the non-profit Vera Institute for Justice, and “socialists” from Jacobin Magazine have in common?

I wish I'd gotten it done earlier, but #undeadformatweek is the perfect excuse to finally get the billows pried of this old Kodak Monitor Six-16. The lens looks and works great and the rest of the camera is functional, but nothing about it is light tight right now.

While I got pictures off the Minolta-16P spy camera, most of them were fuzzy, and all of them were overexposed. Clearly, there is a bit of a learning curve here that I've yet to master. Still, I was pleased to see that the film itself came through the slitting process unscathed. #Undeadformatweek

Popped down to historic town of Lewes (East Sussex) today. Visited the castle & museum as well as having a mooch. A great little place for a little exploring with a camera. Today was a mono kind of day. OM-5 Mark II OM System 12-40mm f2.8 PRO II #Monochrome #MicroFourThirds #Photography

by way of a peace offering to #folderweek, i present some pictures of beautiful kodaks that shoot dead formats 1. kodak bantam special, 828 2. two kodak petites, 127 3. jiffy kodak six-20, 620 4. 1a gift kodak, 616 i believe these are all dorwin teague designs

#undeadformatweek day 1 - 126. shooting instamatic in 2026 this is a kodak instamatic x-15. instamatic/126 is the predecessor of 110, having the same cartridge form and mostly the same cheap, easy to use cameras, but with a larger, 24x24 square exposure. unlike 110 there is nobody selling 126 today

as with 110 you will not have a frame counter, and the sprocket holes of 35mm film will need to be lived with or cropped out. additionally, because 35mm sprocket holes are much more tightly spaced than typical 126 perforations, cameras will need to be blank-fired 2 or 3 times between exposures

until recently FPP did offer cut down film with 126 perforations for loading into these adapters, but they have been sold out for some time and i don't know if they are planning to do any more. might be worth keeping an eye on anyway

however, it's still possible to shoot these cameras. all film is long-expired, though it might be ok on a bright day, but 3d printed cartridges are available which allow you to hand-load and shoot 35mm film in some of these cameras. kodaks are said to work well, others may struggle to advance

To kick off #UndeadFormatWeek I used this film slitter from Japan to cut down a roll of #Kentmere Pan 400 film in 120 to a roll of 127 film and a roll of 16mm film which I then loaded into my #Yashica 44 LM and my #Minolta 16 P. Do I do it correctly? Who knows. Most of it happened in the dark bag!
