👋 Bluesky - we're Wildlife Conservation Society Canada! We work across biodiversity, climate & conservation to better understand and address impacts on Canada’s globally important wild ecosystems🌎 Follow for the latest in Canadian conservation science & policy 🙌 📸 by Peter Soroye

(1/2) Ever wonder how climate impacts bats? 🌍 Cold, wet springs leave them underweight, extreme heat can turn bat boxes into ovens, and humid roosts make cooling tough. Let's support them with diverse roost options! What else can we do to help our flying friends? #BatWeek

🦇 This #BatWeek give bats a fighting chance! WNS is a devastating fungal disease threatening bat populations. But there's hope. Alongside partners, we've developed an innovative probiotic made from naturally occurring beneficial bacteria that could help bats defend themselves against the disease 🧵

(1/2) To kick off Bat Week 2026, we’re highlighting the importance of old growth forests. Trees with cavities created over time provide bat habitat. But human activity is removing large, old trees faster than forests can replace them @albertabats.bsky.social

(1/4) Introducing Coralee Johns and Jolene Patrick, the 2026 cohort of First Nations Women Transforming Conservation fellowship!

(3/4) Jolene, from N’Quatqua of the St’át’imc Nation, has built her career around conservation, particularly protecting grizzly bears & strengthening relationships between people, wildlife & the land. She hopes to inspire all ages to want to protect ti tmicwa (the land) for future generations.

(4/4) We couldn’t be more excited to continue partnering with Indigenous Leadership Initiative on this unique fellowship honouring the critical leadership of Indigenous women in transforming conservation of healthy lands and waters. Coralee and Jolene – welcome to the family!

(1/4) Introducing Coralee Johns and Jolene Patrick, the 2026 cohort of First Nations Women Transforming Conservation fellowship!

(2/4) Coralee, a Yukon First Nation Wolf woman, brings nearly 20yrs experience in conservation, including years of work restoring Chinook salmon populations & monitoring water quality in the Yukon. She seeks to honour her inherent responsibility to care for lands & waters as her ancestors have done.

Who works with an award-winning Youth Advisory Group? We do! 🙌 The Learning from Lake Sturgeon Youth Advisory Group won the Canadian Youth for Wildlife Conservation Award at the True North Wildlife Conservation Awards, launched by @cwf-fcf.bsky.social  We're proud to support these amazing youth 💚

(1/2) "The turtle represents Turtle Island & our relationship to Mother Earth. The leafcutter bee represents honesty and service to community." Together, they remind us that every living being has a meaningful role." - Grace Swain

(2/2) Native bees pollinate the plants that sustain wildlife and people. Turtles help keep freshwater ecosystems healthy by cycling nutrients, dispersing seeds, and supporting balanced food webs. Healthy ecosystems = connected ecosystems.

🚨 New research alert!  Salmon are vital for culture, food security, fisheries, and healthy watersheds. New research suggests current global 30x30 conservation targets cannot sustain salmon populations over the long term. 70-80% protection of watersheds is much closer to what's needed (1/4)

If we want future generations to continue seeing salmon in our waters, conservation planning must happen at the watershed scale, focused on maintaining the function & integrity of whole ecosystems. That means moving beyond arbitrary targets and protecting what salmon actually need (3/4)

🚨 New research alert!  Salmon are vital for culture, food security, fisheries, and healthy watersheds. New research suggests current global 30x30 conservation targets cannot sustain salmon populations over the long term. 70-80% protection of watersheds is much closer to what's needed (1/4)

Salmon ecosystems face multiple pressures, including industrial development, that can push watersheds toward ecological tipping points. The findings highlight the need to identify & avoid thresholds that could trigger irreversible declines, not assuming fixed protection targets will be enough (2/4)

PAUSE. LISTEN. LEARN. REFLECT #NDTR26 On National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we invite you to pause, listen, learn & reflect on the truths of Canada’s history of residential schools, the impacts of colonialism & how we move forward to build a foundation of mutual respect & partnership (1/4)

For those of us working in conservation and the natural sciences, we take the opportunity to learn and reflect on our own responsibilities (3/4)

Across Canada and the globe, since time immemorial, Indigenous Peoples have stewarded their lands, waters, animals, plants, communities, cultures, and languages. Today we invite you: Pause. Listen. Learn. Reflect. And carry these actions beyond September 30th (4/4)

We pause to make space for truth. We listen to and honour our survivors, families, communities, and we remember the children who did not return home (2/4)

(1/2) From scientists in the field to community members protecting local habitats, conservation is about people 💚   The People & Conservation category of the #2026KBAPhotoContest celebrates stories of connection, care & stewardship across Canada’s KBAs 🧵

What makes a great photograph stand out? Last year’s KBA Photo Contest Grand Prize winner, Jérémy, has some advice: bring a unique point of view! In part two of our chat, he shares tips for finding your unique way of seeing and telling a story. Entries are open until Oct. 15!

"The Bear Clan is represented, symbolizing healers, protectors, medicine carriers & leaders." Across many Indigenous cultures, bears carry important teachings. Grizzly bears are also an umbrella species. Protecting the vast landscapes they need alo helps other species thrive. 🎨 by Grace Swain
