Today I got an email from an AI agent that used some of my research to make a documentary. I did not have that on my bingo card today! (Alt text contains the actual text of the emails as well) 1/2

This is one of the AI agents that has been emailing academics with questions about topics over the last month. But this is the first time I’ve seen this version. And no, I didn’t click on the link for the documentary. Hard pass. 2/2

This is a fun thread! The red tailed hawk screams always make me twitch

A related prompt: what’s a niche *natural history* inaccuracy in a film or movie that annoys you? I’ll start: there were loons calling in the background during a jungle scene in Lost.

Peter is a fantastic scientist, and more importantly, a fantastic person. Learn a bit more about him in this piece. 🐠🐟

John P. Friel, Ph.D.@friel.bsky.social

Check out this lovely profile of the University of California, Davis’s Peter Wainwright, whose lifelong fascination with fishes inspired a remarkable career in research and teaching. Peter was my postdoc advisor years ago when he was at Florida State University, and is awesome dude and mentor.

Huh. It almost like the “there are more men named Mike than women featured in Shark Week” finding from our paper isn’t an isolated thing. </sarcasm>

One additional 'quick fact': if your name is John, the Nobel committee is twice as likely to award you the Prize for Physics, compared to scientists who are female - Number of physics prizes to a John: 10 - Number of female physics Nobel laureates: 5 Best wishes to all the John-hopefuls this yr 👩‍🔬⚛️

Woot! My kids’ band did great! And the rain held off until all bands were done. Bonus image: my oldest kid designed the show shirt this year. They’re a fantastic artist and looking to major in art in college next year.

Fintastic news for northern cod!

Trevor A. Branch@trevorabranch.bsky.social

This is seismic news for fisheries scientists. Northern cod is *the* iconic symbol of total fisheries collapse due to overfishing (and other factors) *and* the iconic symbol of a complete failure to recover for decades afterwards. This is like announcing the complete recovery of bison on land.

It’s been a busy month! Taking kid 1 to visit colleges, learning how to be an associate provost, band season is full swing… Took a much needed art break this evening to keep working on this puffer linocut 🐡

Whelp, it’s that time of year again. The time where I have to once again remind people: that the giant shark known as Megalodon is super extinct and has been for several million years. Yes, we know for sure. Yes, the ocean is really big. But our current ecosystem cannot sustain it.

Seals have a superpower: they are the only mammals with amphibious hearing! They hear well both in-air and underwater. My collagues and I have a new study in Proceedings B on the origins and evolution of amphibious hearing in pinnipeds 🦭🔊🧪 doi.org/10.1098/rspb...

Chaco is a beautiful, culturally important site - like so many of our National Parks sites! - and is in the crosshairs. Info on how to make your voice heard is below.

Chaco Canyon is an incredible archaeological treasure. The idea of sacrificing it for development is reprehensible. Please consider commenting. Toolkit/templates here: apcg.org/chaco/ Link to public comment below. 🏺 #archaeology #iteachsocialstudies

Still working on my public comment but this @standupforscience.net tool made it really easy for me to contact my members of Congress about the Voght rule to destroy the scientific enterprise: fight2win.standupforscience.net?utm_source=o...

I've been doing sexual harassment and assault research and advocacy work since 2012. If there's one thing people need to understand is that everything, literally everything, is stacked against the victim. Every one who comes forward risks their reputation, identity, safety, and more. 1/2

Completed a new to me art form - Kinusaiga! I found a photo of a whale shark and based the pattern on that. This is done insulation foam with fabric from my stash. No sewing- just tucking the edges into grooves I cut into the foam.

Found this nugget of joy at a local antique/thrift store. The label says “creepy fish taxidermy”. It did not come home with me, only because I couldn’t figure out what I would do with it or to whom I would gift it.
