Now out in @acs.org JACS Au, the manuscript by #BarbaraTerlouw et al. describing PARAS, a high-accuracy machine-learning algorithm to predict substrate specificities of nonribosomal peptide synthetase (NRPS) adenylation domains, key for estimating natural product structures from BGC sequence. 1/n

#ISBA2025 will be my official introduction in the Actino community. As we all look at understanding the diversity of these Microorganisms. I remain convinced that diversity drives discovery, from natural product discovery to human community. #PrideMonth #QueerInScience

If you are a PhD student in microbial interactions or natural products that is displaced by this political bullshit and looking for a new lab, I have room for one (or potentially two) PhD students in my group in the fall when I move to UW. Feel free to reach out via email.

Replying to @uhactually.bsky.social

In other words, when you ask for example “do vaccines cause autism?” you are looking for information about whether a thing in the world (a vaccination) produces an outcome (autism). But the LLM can only answer “what words could sound right after this?”

We put together this protocol in part to encourage broader adoption of Multiplexed Activity Metabolomics, an engine for functional metabolomics of all types including specialized metabolite discovery. We enjoy knowing if metabolite is active before isolating it, and so should you! #natprod

Gaining insights into the complexity of specialized metabolites and their possible ecological roles These metabolites not only function as antimicrobials, but also as cue molecules among other peculiar functions -see our paper in microLIFE of @femsjournals.bsky.social on surfactin and subtilosin A

Julian is truly one of the great minds of our time. His work inspires everything I do in my own. I consider myself very lucky for having met him briefly and to have sat in on many a seminar.

One of the kindest and most interesting scientists I have known, Julian Davies, passed away. I had some remarkable conversations with him. Watch this seminar, and you will see what I mean. RIP, Julian. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cjdb...

Somewhere in the U.S., there’s a scientist staring at their NSF/NIH grant application wondering why they bother. This post is for you. Science and society both need you. Hang in there and know there is a whole community supporting you.
