🚨Some personal news: I'm honoured and humbled to have been asked to take over running the Jumbo Profiterole and XXL Eclair Factory. It's a dream job, but I've got some big choux to fill

At the emergency relief centre, the queue of Guardian readers continued to grow. "We decided that stockpiling was inequitable", they said. "And really the government should have done it. Are none of these ration packs vegan?"

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

Sure, we should, if we can (many cannot). But as I keep pointing out, the government itself is making no provision at all. No stockpiles, no back-up, no alternative sources. It's individuating the response to a collective problem, and that never ends well. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

This is a very silly story. There is no "plot" and no "raid". Just a hysterical misunderstanding of a technical consultation. There *is* a real issue - but it's likely unintended and I expect it will fixed in the legislation. A 🧵 on what's really going on

Inclined not to put too much weight on IMF forecasting the UK having biggest deficit reduction in the G7, despite the headlines. 1. It's derived from OBR's March forecast which itself was finalised just as the Iran war kicked off. It's not a bottom-up analysis from the IMF.

Christ alive, that US deficit

As a crossword fan I'll just note that "Cris Tolomia" is an anagram of "I, Mr Lo-Cost AI"

The story that Britain's 2nd-richest person “recently” fled UK taxes for Monaco -- which this week we showed is incorrect -- seems have been repeated everywhere. Including by a website whose offshore tax advice we scrutinised in a recent report: tinyurl.com/4wh78u8t 🧵

Kemi Badenoch wants to exempt the family home from inheritance tax. But that creates a perverse incentive for elderly people to *upsize* to save IHT. That could double the cost of the policy, and push £100bn+ from savings into housing. A 🧵 on bad tax cuts.

Still believe that HMRC getting inspectors to ensure the super rich are actually paying the taxes that they should will have a far more chilling effect on the billionaires than flag-flying about potential tax changes www.bloomberg.com/news/article...

Page 203 of Green Party's 2026 conference agenda describes the "forces aligned against our vision": "a global network" of collaborators in politics, business and the media, working on a "multi-decade strategy" to re-run the fascism of the 20th century.

My family's claim to fame is that my uncle, who was a painter, did artwork for Iron Maiden. (Mostly stage sets I think; he also did sets for the Chippendales, and was told off for dancing along to their music during rehearsals.) Anyway, I think he would have liked this cover.

Are the doom-laden prophecies of AI experts sincere? Or are they a helpful distraction from the bad things AI companies are doing now? If AI companies believe in this risk, why can't they stop? Thank you to the 20+ people who helped me explore these questions for this week's New Statesman

You may have noticed an embarrassing error in my previous post. Sorry! The top prize in the National Watershit Prize is only enough to pay the salary of Thames Water CEO Chris Weston for just over 3 days.

Lobbyists for the water industry have just announced a new 'National Watershit Prize', which will award a whopping £15,000 to the best research into stopping sewage pollution. That's enough to pay the salary of Thames Water CEO Chris Weston for almost five days!
