To understand the desperation bleeding from these leaks you need to remember that the anti trans movement in the UK have a pre determined timeline, as they view it, for what will happen. The SC judgement was a tactical victory for the anti trans movement in the UK. No point denying it 1/x

Might want to mention widespread attempted voter suppression in Brazil by Bolsenaro aligned officials....

Sam Freedman@samfr.bsky.social

Going to rephrase a post because it looked too definitive. On the voting so far in Brazil Lula seems to be doing better than expected. A win is much more possible than I expected with 10% of the vote in.

So Murrays' rhetoric here is unusual in its directness: he's expressed a similar sentiment in his books + media appearances but coached in more general language.

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

Douglas Murray writes a commentary in the Spectator offering a modern mashup of Powellite/Elon Musketeer themes of choosing whether to be a spectator at their own funeral pyre - or to fight back. Closely echoes Elon Musk's "fight back or die" narrative (that violence may become necessary+legitimate)

So Farage has, in the past, engaged in the 'what makes someone British/English?' debate as he put it in regards to Muslims and Eastern/Central Europeans. Now if he wants to lie to seek an off ramp, so be it. His only red lines are what will prevent him getting closer to being PM.

Roland Smith@rolandmcs.bsky.social

I'm going to say it.... Well done, Nigel Farage. Suffice it to say, this has set off another round of right-wing ferrets fighting in a sack. You have to wonder if Farage recognises this is about as far as Reform gets, and he's now on an off-ramp. And maybe he really does have red lines.

He has always pointed to the fact that his political projects have refused to go into the blood and soil rhetoric in public. Behind closed doors it is alleged that he is far more comfortable with that language than he presents.

To summerise: while this latest script is welcome I am cautious abour celebrating this as some kind of red line where previous behaiviour by this man indicates a very different political ideology

Oddly this has nearly happened. When Suzy Izzard was toying with running for parliament, Duffield kicked up an enourmous fuss to little to no response from the then leadership.

Given Jonns' recent blog about Augustus/Octavian: Streeting is very Lepidus coded. Told by many of the ancien regime that he should be leader and yet finds himself outmanouvered by someone who'd long been away from the center of power....

Jonn Elledge@jonnelledge.bsky.social

Streeting to Burnham the day he finally did some parliamentary arithmetic

Let us not pretend that Saudi intervention in its neighbors has been for anything other than the bolstering of MBS and that it has been indulged to a ridiculous degree

This a million times. People of colour being dragged on to debate maniacs about imaginary labels & race science is an abomination. proper ‘how German are you’ Nazi shit Note that people like me with white migrant parentage never asked to defend our identity Englishness. Is. A. Made. Up. Thing

Sathnam Sanghera@sathnam.bsky.social

Dear tv and radio producers. Thankyou for the invitation. But, no, I do not want to appear on your show to defend the idea that I am English, after 50 years of living and working here, because the increasingly feral right want to turn this into a "debate" and you cannot see how you're being played

Lib Dem canvassers prepare to go to...... southern Holbern and St Pancreas

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Back home to a small forest worth of by-election leaflets: four from Labour, three from the Greens, three from Reform, one from the Conservatives, one from the Climate Party. The Liberal Democrats still too hoity-toity to make it to the south of the constituency.

*Slams head on desk* If you want to talk about ballistic missile defence and you keep mentioning the 'Iron Dome' as an example then you need to then clarify how you plan to supply and pay for such a system without considerable military aid from the global hegemomic power.

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Call me old-fashioned, but I just think that if you are announcing £10bn of spending, then if the Shadow Treasury team and the leader's office are doing their jobs properly, the leader should have clearer answers to these questions:

The Iron Dome system is, in reality, a multilayered system of imterceptors that requires significant input from both a scaled up domestic production *and* regular top ups from the US.

Lastly: the weakness of these interceptor systems os their lack of relative effectiveness on UAVs as well as a poor cost/expenditure ratio. If you want to talk effective, UK wide defence: you need to look at UAVs then interceptors

Obama, Clinton and Harris all made remarks that were pounced upon as being disrespectful to 'real america'. All three grovelled, wore sackcloth and ashes etc. Meanwhile Republicans can openly rail against Dem cities with no approbrium from fucking anyone in the US media

News to Remember@moments2remember.link

The PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES stood on a stage and said: “Let ’em take out Los Angeles. Let ’em take out San Diego.” And people CHEERED. I’m sorry, but what the actual fuck are we doing?

James Gunn deeply loving certain comic book storylines has served him well (and Marvel: seriously you couldnt pay people to read Marvel Cosmic before GotG) in the past. But.....

Stephen Bush@stephenkb.bsky.social

Supergirl. “What if we followed up our lighter and broader Superman with a darker and grimier Supergirl, who we introduced jokingly at the end? That will definitely make back a two hundred million dollar budget.” What?

Woman of Tomorrow was written during DC's darker reboot era: which makes it an odd choice to adapt given Gunn's well publicised love of the much lighter "All Star" version of Superman that he had brought to the screen.

Given the darker Lanterns and Peacemaker series, the introduction of Clayface as the standalone villain film etc I'm seeing alot of "and Monsters" half of "Gods and Monsters". With Swamp Thing, Wonder Woman and a Damien Wayne Batman film coming up alongside a Braniac Supe film... where are the gods?

A similar cynicism is currently present in the anti migration right: tabloids bemoaning recent immigrants and comparing them unfavourably to Central & Eastern European immigrants pre-Brexit. A quick search of their headlines from that time period reveals a very different attitude....

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social

I detect a cynical intuition among some pro-EU liberals to try an inauthentic dog whistling to ethnonationalism, turning "ha ha ha, were you expecting higher immigration, and Indians & Nigerians, not Poles" into 'make immigration whiter, not browner again'. This could backfire quite badly imho

"Sure we kinda, sorta, kicked off the Atlantic Slave Trade but we didn't think to retain serfdom until the late 1800s? I expect better from you all"

I have to say: not a fan of the A wing being changed from a Incom purpusfully designed interceptor to counter the TIE Interceptor class later in the war.

Joel@storywonker.bsky.social

On to Rebels S2! It's funny how Legends had A-Wings as this late addition but Canon has them there even before Yavin

It showed the Rebellion developing capabilities (much like the Ackbar designed B wing heavy fighter bomber) to counter the Imp navy rather than relying on retrofitting or upgrading Clone War and Judical Fleet era tech

1. Great thread and I would urge others to read OP's other threads that dig into the ongoing saga of Peggie vs RCN. 2. It is notable that many on the transphobic/homophobic side of the arguement ignore that while belief is protected under EA2010, manifestation/demonstration of belief isnt

"Hey Will any agenda items yet?" "I don't know who the PM is atm" Keeping a whiskey bottle in my desk drawer like Rebus is becoming more and more tempting

So, just to be clear, just as professional wargaming starts to lose the stigma of 'oh is it like toy soldiers?' Sky broadcasts a series that puts it right back where it started. Fucking great.

Mic Wright@brokenbottleboy.bsky.social

What great timing for Sky that last week it broadcast a five-part ‘war game’ series with real former politicians and military figures that went from an attack near an airbase to escalation that results in all out war. A truly juicy slab of propaganda.

This kind of thing hacks me off as the people I know who have made their careers in the profession are genuine experts: utilising their skills in ways that the title 'wargaming' barely covers: emergency planning, local authority enviromental planning, housing policy and a myriad of non military uses

Of course you have the geopolitical and military lenses: both of which are incredibly useful to test various scenarios. But crucially these are repeatable analysis exercises. To reduce it to former polititions playing 'dress up' while experts quietly ensure it doesnt go full Black Swan is shite.

His Brexit Quadrology kinda charts alot of this descent but also the racheting up (in his own mind at least) of the importance of his narrative of the UKs' political scene.

Dorian Lynskey@dorianlynskey.bsky.social

Shipman’s really gone all the way huh. “The courts are a conspiracy against the nation”?!

You can criticise Seldons 'X at 10' series in a number of ways but, unlike Shipman, hes never attempted to present his writing as the 'One True Faith' of UK political reporting

Those friends have all assumed Marie has simply been doing the bog, smoke, new drink round and are suprised when she arrives back at the rtable with the meat sweats

Marie Le Conte@youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com

my special move as a French person living in Britain is that I will go for drinks in the pub with friends, leave to have a sit down dinner by myself then return to the pub to have more drinks with friends

The only thing I struggle with the Spielburg & Hanks WW2 trilogy (Band of Brothers, Pacific, Masters of the Air) is the now inevitable cheap shot at British and Commenwealth forces in them. It is made even more notable by all three series careful highlighting of Resistance movements in each series

Katelyn Burns@katelynburns.com

Killing time before the USMNT match and finally getting around to watching the Band of Brothers documentary.

To be clear the victory in WW2 was allied: even if you reduce the Allies to the USSR, British Empire and US, the removal of one of the three makes victory even more costly and far more dificult

I'm just always at a loss when I watch series based on this idea that WW2 should be rightly celebrated as a triumph over evil with a major participent being treated as a 'oh I suppose they were there'

People can date/sleep with whomever they please. But if ypur response to a bi man telling you he is bi is to treat them like a plague rat: it's a you problem. Honestly a little tired of the subtextual inference that I'm either inherantly incapable of fidelity or less masculine for being... me.

The Newsroom and The West Wing have a similar vibe (I will continue to keep rewatching them)

I guess we're still not ready to acknowledge that Breaking Bad was the dramatic equivalent of junkfood, huh

Think the issue with GoT is that a decent chunk of the layers in the books rely on the return of magic that the tv searies lacked the budget for....

Jonn Elledge@jonnelledge.bsky.social

To be clear - this is a perfectly good form of entertainment! What it does it does well! But I don't feel like there are layers to it, in the way there are with The Wire or Succession or even, more controversially, GoT. It's a show you watch for the incident and buzz, not to dissect it afterwards.
