For millions, Terry Pratchett opened the door to a lifelong love of reading. The passage below, from Reaper Man, has always struck us as one of his most moving – a humanist meditation on death and legacy that continues to be read at humanist funerals today. #GNUTerryPratchett

A lot of damage has been done to the Greyfriars Bobby statue after an irresponsible tour guide urged people to rub the nose for luck. Unfortunately, he didn’t specify what kind of luck. If you rub the nose, there is a 94.3% chance that your marriage will fail within 6 months. 1/2 #Edinburgh

I never appreciated just how much random research goes into writing a novel. Here are some of the tabs I have open, with no context. "What are a wizard's robes made of?" "long, skinny sword that curves" "abominable snowman looney toons"

Your reminder that fairy tales are full of stepmothers because women once routinely died in childbirth, from postpartum sepsis, or from other infectious diseases and left behind housefuls of motherless children. Stable nuclear families are made possible by vaccines, antibiotics, and safe abortions.

The extreme wealth of these people can only be accumulated by exploiting a monopoly. It's really not about taxation it's about the total failure of competition regulation in the Internet age.
