New legislation proposed in California would certify foods as not being ultra-processed. It's a bad idea. We should be using the regulatory state to improve diets, but by focusing on the specifics of nutrition and not on broad generalizations. My latest for TNR. newrepublic.com/article/2086...

newrepublic.comPeople Love to Blame “Ultra-Processed Food.” It’s Unhelpful.A new bill proposed in California misses the point: The reason not to eat junk food has more to do with what’s in it than how processed it is.

I understand the impulse not to let this guy's statements dictate the news cycle but the fact that he can say shit like this and it barely causes a ripple in the media is a key to his ability to maintain power. Constantly pushing the bar of normality downwards, no pressure to take responsibility.

counterpoint: eat some tofu and don't support factory farming. a little too much elective affinity these days between health disinfo influencers, "affordability" discourse, and the academics behind the nutritional guidelines, all getting the credulous treatment in the media.

“If you believe AI can do so much more, why reduce a 10,000 person company to a 6,000 person company? Why not make your 10,000 person company do the work of a 20,000 person company? To see AI as requiring “cuts” as opposed to creating leverage gives away the game.” — Aaron Zamost

Kinda crazy that it was Tumblr that invented the “repost” feature on social media and really took off. I still think their greatest product design choice was hiding following/follower numbers, which removed some social capital dynamics and made users focus on the actual content of their posts.

Now they’ve joined the fediverse. Given that Threads has too, and the popularity of Mastodon and BlueSky (not to mention the web3 ones), I’m feeling more optimistic about where microblogging and social media in general are heading.

Instagram is the new Facebook in so many ways, including functioning as a kind of ‘web of trust’ and rolodex. But it’s overcurated and performative. My bets are on some kind of ActivityPub-supporting platform (Mastodon, Threads, Tumblr). Especially given EU investment in projects working on this.

Happy Valentine’s Day! 💘💌💝 Come by 433 Cortland Ave here in San Francisco anytime before 5:30pm for a last minute gift for your loved one(s). :)

When you drive a car and complain about high gas prices, this is the end result of that logic by the way. A society that demands cheap, stable fossil fuels will eventually outsource violence to maintain it.

A joint study by European Space Agency & NOAA concludes we have gravely underestimated ocean acidification. We’ve already crossed the planetary boundary, shattered it for the Arctic, & eliminated 43% of coral habitat. Stopping emissions cannot reverse this. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...

Mainstream pundits have instantly sanitized and ignored Charlie Kirk's core political project and its impacts. He has been remembered by the mainstream press as someone they merely disagreed with, a debate me-guy whose words and actions had zero consequences: www.404media.co/charlie-kirk...

The assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sent shockwaves across the country, not only through its raw violence but as a hallmark of worsening political divisions wracking the United States. President Donald Trump could and should use his enormous platform to calm tempers.

Copyright is a form of policing. It’s inherently rooted in censorship and surveillance. Historically, copyright accelerates consolidation of power and extracts creativity for profit. If we use copyright to fight AI, it consolidates power further. A future where everything is licensed? No thx

This, and it doesn't work. Now, it is possible to address the harms of mass engagement-driven platforms. But doing so requires pushing back on the core biz models of the platforms, not tinkering on the edges w surveillant 'solutions' that increase surveillance w/o addressing the root cause.

Eerke Boiten@eerkeboiten.bsky.social

It is my opinion that introducing age verification now is irresponsible, mainly because we have now reached the point where Western governments *are* using "the database state" and exploiting online surveillance to be repressive - just as privacy activists warned for decades. This applies to UK & US

“Tokenizing” everything from real-world assets onchain to info in AI renders complex realities into units systems can compute, monitor, and control. As in Seeing Like a State, abstraction enables scale but also disciplines behavior and concentrates power. Foucault warned us!
