Canadian politicians have been condemning an effigy strung up at a recent pro-Palestine protest. To hear them tell it, it was vile antisemitism: a Jewish person hanging from a noose. But that’s a lie -- one now being used to criminalize protest and vilify protesters. Let’s talk about the truth:

I get called less by journalists since the moral panic against harm reduction got started a couple years back. Even the good ones stand a little further back. Plus, we can no longer get meetings with cabinet ministers. These are clearly the least important metrics of backlash, but there it is.

The richest 10% of Americans own roughly 87% of stocks. The richest 1% alone own roughly half of all stocks. It's worth pointing out once again that the stock market is not the economy.

While the McDonald’s CEO gets roasted for his awkward burger taste test... McDonald’s is among the top employers of workers who rely on food stamps. And McDonald's CEO recently raked in $18.2M — over 1,000x the company's median employee pay. That should leave a bad taste in your mouth.

The company - Roshel - also happens to be owned by Roman Shimonov, a former IDF soldier who immigrated to Canada. One of his companies still provides services to the IDF - and in interviews, he has noted a close collaboration with Israel’s major defence manufacturer IAI in developing the vehicles (for access to “unique” and “cutting edge” technologies). What is unfolding in the US is horrific. ICE is terrorizing human beings and ripping families apart.AND, democracy has not crumbled overnight. The process has a history as long as social structures defined by domination and control. Many who were shielded from the effects of the violent exploitation the super rich have imposed on people and land “over there” for the sake of profit are opening their eyes. For decades, violence has been carried out “over there” against colonized, occupied, racialized and marginalized people. Militarized policing, indefinite detention, psychological warfare, starvation, disappearances, surveillance, no due process, etc.Whether “over there” represents a skin colour that isn’t yours or a “faraway land” overseas - these systems were tested on people deemed disposable. Now they’re here. And suddenly it feels unthinkable.Canada is not a neutral bystander in this moment. From armoured vehicles supplied to ICE, to cooperation agreements with ICE quietly renewed, to making deals with Palantir, to enabling repression while offering reassurance on global stages — the contradiction is there. Comforting words about stability and order cannot coexist with material support for state violence.Marginalized communities have warned: the cracks in democracy are lived in first by those with the least protection. What looks like “authoritarian drift” to some is just “authoritarian spread” to those who have always experienced state sanctioned violence. Now is a moment to connect dots, weave threads and find our way back to each other in a shared reality from which we can take action. Not to go back to normal. Because normal never was.

ICE is running a “conveyor belt” of illegally detained Minnesota families. Agents are arresting entire families with legal status and immediately shipping them off to Texas to deny them legal representation and avoid the federal courts in Minnesota. The cruelty is endless.
