DHS, ICE, and CBP must be pruned the way I "pruned" my Bradford Pear trees. Rip out the roots and start over. As for CBP and ICE, Canada has an imperfect, but still model, approach and agency (Canada Border Services Agency). Let's look to our northern neighbor and ally for some useful guidance.

That’s true. Most criminal justice students who want to go into law enforcement, want "prestige" federal jobs. Border control is where the failures end up. Everybody knows you couldn’t get a better job. Local police jobs are more desirable. I never knew the culture of BC was so violent, though.

There’s a bit of a silver lining. They holstered their guns, acknowledged and didn’t interfere with press and legal observers. Importantly this group seemed to be calmer and in control of themselves than previous ICE incidents. ICE/CBP is still trying to intimidate and punish Minnesotans.

I didn’t see anything like this on my trips to Communist east bloc countries in the late 70s and early 80s as a Canadian gymnast, but then again, all this authoritarianism had already happened there. The citizens were noticeably fearful, reserved, compliant and joyless by then.

It would not surprise me. Trump has a long long long long history of not paying contractors (I personally spoke to one who had been trying for months to get paid for completed work). Where are the DOGE checks & the tariff checks? If he didn't pay ICE/CBP bonuses, that would be par for the course.
