just for reference, lula had ~20% odds to win brazil's election, and pulled it off, with nothing extreme other than standard polling error (albeit unlikely, hence 20%). FLIPR currently puts Andrews at a 27% chance to win, which is actually higher. 27% is still low. But it's possible!

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

the thing about wave elections is that they hit unevenly and can produce crazy outcomes

like lula was, SC is within a bit of normal polling error of being a D victory! hoping for an error in your favor is never great, but we're talking about SC here!

i know there's not really a meaningful diff between 49.9% chance D wins and 50.1% D wins, but symbolically it's wild that we're approaching Blansas territory Not to get too full of hopium, but even SC is a normal polling error within D victory now.

American cities! Urban crime plummeted, more reinvestment, urbanism has become a much stronger cultural force, and people have wanted to move into walkable neighborhoods (which has unfortunately spawned a lot of conflict)

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

To every minority who embraces who the far right for personal gain, I wish you a happy FAFO

last month, before That Ad made it to air, I went down to Ohio to figure out why Vivek Ramaswamy seemed to be struggling so much in his home state. the South Asians of Columbus, the bored students of OSU, and the hecklers of the Cleveland 'burbs all helped me understand: slate.com/news-and-pol...

New SEC filings show that Mark Zuckerberg is preparing to pay California’s billionaire tax without losing control of Meta. So billionaires can afford to pay the tax? And they won't lose control of their companies or flee the state? Don’t fall for billionaires’ propaganda. Vote YES on Prop 40.

so not only is Zuck not leaving if the wealth tax passes, Meta is paying him *even more* so that he's net-neutral on wealth & ownership. Just a reminder that billionaires are still fundamentally billionares. A wealth tax on a billionaire still leaves them pretty much intact as a billionaire

Musk’s wealth is a threat to democracyβ€”not just in the U.S. but everywhere. He’s probably the greatest threat to the free world today.

this is like straight-up a crime, right? they were taking money for this "experiment."

We were investigating Wedgewood for faking their data and emailed them for comment this morning, ahead of publishing the findings tomorrow. They are now trying to cover up their fraud with the "we were doing a social experiment" excuse. Full story here: blog.fiftyplusone.news/p/fiftypluso...

Elon could spend literally as much money as has been spent IN TOTAL this cycle (~12 billion) EVERY election and never come close to depleting his wealth in his lifetime.

Steven Beschloss@stevenbeschloss.bsky.social

The most sickening thing is not that Elon Musk is pumping hundreds of millions into the midterm elections. The most sickening thing is that this doesn't make even a dent on his grotesque fortune, which means he will continue to abuse the power his wealth provides him.

maybe this is real estate developers actually skating to where the puck is going, but this is literally right next door to a gigantic "life sciences lab" office complex that's still sitting empty. at least the streetscape'd be improved (already significant improved from the aquatic park bldgs)

As I always say to my students (sometimes with this specific example) you really need to think about the size of the effect and not just the sign. β€œDo rich people move in response to tax increases?” is not the right question for policy. The right question is, *how much* do they move?

James Medlock@jdcmedlock.bsky.social

A lot of rich guys want you to think that the bar on the right is always going to be bigger than the bar on the left.

This is a β€˜good strategy’ in game theory terms if you assume Trump will punish you for not rolling over and showing deference and democrats won’t. Democrats should think about altering those incentives.

another listing that went for ~$1400/sq ft. i didn't think we'd hit this level of pricing for a long while, hopefully never, but instead we're hitting it basically overnight. comps from not very long ago were $1000/sq ft, which itself seemed an insane level for anywhere not in manhattan/SF

i find this grimly funny bc the reason we have a 5-day/40-hr workweek norm right now isn't because of technological progress, it's because of labor. an amazon eng can use a frontier model and finish their day's tasks faster. do you think Bezos gives 'em the rest of the day off, or more work?

important but very hard to tell normie voters that Susan Collins is mostly just a successful branding exercise and not some maverick independent voice. i forgot who quipped it, but some dem legislator was like "Collins is always a great vote for us... unless we actually need it"
