Inspired choice by @mattchorley.bsky.social for @warmovietheatre.com Used to watch the repeats with my Liverpudlian grandfather who was in the Home Guard. He would speak comedically about his own HG experiences in Huyton but I sometimes wonder if he felt obliged to do so.

This week's episode of War Movie Theatre is our most popular yet. Join me and Matt Chorley as we discuss why Dad's Army has lasted, why Captain Mainwaring really is a hero, and why Arthur Lowe had a trousers clause in his contract. https://pod.fo/e/37e11d

Before I left London many moons ago, I went to an exhibition of Lucian Freud's 'recent work' at Whitechapel. It seems fitting that now I'm visiting my daughter - in London - that we should see Freud's early drawings 😍

Thrilled by this insightful review of 'Wales in England 1914-1945' by Louise Miskell for Immigrants & Minorities journal. It was, indeed, 'a labour of love'! ❤️

Have received a generous review of my book 'Wales in England 1914-1945' in The Welsh History Review: ✍️ a seminal study ✍️ an essential text which opens up a whole new field of Welsh cultural study Thank you Simon Brooks!

A beautiful piece of writing by @danigaravelli.bsky.social which reminds me that my original fascination with the Second World War began sitting at the feet of various great aunts & uncles visiting my nana's bungalow.

I'm not really starting a substack, I don't think. But 1 of the best things that happened to me this year was being shortlisted for the Anne Brown essay prize. The essay was on my great aunt, her house & her remarkable siblings. You can read it here, if you like. danigaravelli.substack.com/p/lepanto

At the Scottish National War Memorial (Edinburgh Castle) for VJ Day 80th anniversary commemoration service. Is there more of a concerted effort this year to pay attention to VJ Day? Or were previous significant anniversaries the same?

Hadley is correct.

We're replaying classic episodes, starting with Casablanca: romance, film noir, but also an intensely political war movie. Listen wherever you get your podcasts as Hadley Freeman tries to persuade @roberthutton.co.uk and @duncanweldon.bsky.social that Paul Henreid is sexier than Humphrey Bogart.

Nice to see a mention here of Richard Llewellyn, author of How Green Was My Valley (1939). When Dean and Llewellyn attended a wartime meeting betw ENSA & the BBC, the latter appeared in a green suit & violet tie, causing one wag to comment: "How keen was my valet!".

Visited The Robin Chapel today, an exquisite #SWW memorial to Lt. Robin Tudsbery (1919-45). It is situated within a disabled veterans' housing scheme in Craigmillar, set up by his grieving parents.

Listening to this podcast on train home (post-Second World War conference) and, as ever, it became particularly moving when John Crace reflected on the impact of the war on his own family members.

Drop the bombs! Free the POWs! Run off with your best friend's wife! That's right, we're joined by ‪@mrjohncrace.bsky.social‬ to watch the awful, wonderful Mosquito Squadron!

Mersa - Keith Douglas (1920-1942) Now from the skeletal town the cherry skinned soldiers stroll down to undress to idle on the white beach... I see my feet like stones underwater. The logical little fish converge and nip the flesh imagining I am one of the dead

Thank you @wugolini.bsky.social for your talk on expression of English Welsh identities during the First World War. As you know this is a concept that I understand - although mine isn't an English Welsh identity, it's a Welsh identity living in England. :-)
