This week's episode of War Movie Theatre is our most popular yet. Join me and Matt Chorley as we discuss why Dad's Army has lasted, why Captain Mainwaring really is a hero, and why Arthur Lowe had a trousers clause in his contract. https://pod.fo/e/37e11d

Can you also discuss why Private Pike is used as a term of abuse. Thousands of Private Pikes, young lads who were close to their mothers, who did their duty on land, sea and in the air. My dad was one in the navy.

I always wonder about the line from WWII to Dad's Army to 'Allo 'Allo (so much more impact than the thing it was supposed to parody!) to Brexit (the weirdly idiosyncratic trajectory of UK Boomers compared to Boomers in other European states).

Dad's Army is great as a piece of comedy/writing but placed in the broader context it's a step on the path to a situation where I can reference the "'Allo 'Allo special episode set in Auschwitz" and people will pause for a tenth of a second before dismissing it.

I love the X-Files. But I do also wonder about the long term impact of the one biggest shows of the 90s being premised on ‘conspiracy theories are real, the government is in on it and there’s a shadowy cabal directing everything’.
