If you think Microsoft breaking Windows is a new thing - think again🤭 They've killed their own widget platform 6 times in 30 years. Each one died from a different spectacular failure. But the last iteration might actually be done right Read the full history: xakpc.dev/windows-widg...

xakpc.devMicrosoft Has Killed Widgets Six Times. Here's Why They Keep Coming Back.30 years of Windows widgets - from Active Desktop to the Widget Board. Six implementations, six deaths, and the scar tissue that shapes the platform you'd build on today.

The main feature of my 🪟 app is done - a truly instant quick chat. Here's a comparison of desktop apps from different providers versus what you can get when cutting out all the noise (next post ⬇️) I think it's good, what do you think?

Today I decommissioned the last piece of my late startup This .NET Framework 4 web app, hosted on Azure, worked for 8 years total, and the last 5 almost by itself Now, when the last user no longer need it, it can finally go to rest. Thanks for all your work, small app 🫡

Why does copilot sometimes suck? Here's example N+1: I simply asked it to add docs. `inheritdoc` is OK, but what's with this `min` method that doesn't even exist in C#?

As soon as I expanded my ChatGPT subscription, I set myself a recurrent task So far it's not bad, so I'll create more 'summarize news' tasks

The same code was produced by ChatGPT o3-mini (not high) and Claude 3.5 Sonnet Both produced the result after 2-3 steps of dialog with clarifications

You probably have around 10GB of RAM and most likely a GPU of some kind on your windows machine. Your chats with LLMs should NOT take several seconds to load couple messages. This is the speed we need 🎞👀 (forgot to shut off some BGM I was listening to while coding, so enjoy)

I kinda gave up on 🦋 lately, but I haven't given up on building stuff. Here is an early version of a Windows app (the ugliest one): an LLM app outperforming both Copilot and ChatGPT native apps in speed on the same 4o-mini model. I might even ship it soon with BYOK or with some kind of sub

AI replaced me Not entirely though. But this DevOps project no longer needs an architect because some AI deployment tool was chosen welp #enterprise-shit

Looks like I need to master Octopus Deploy this week cool, cool #enterprise-shit

9-5 grind is over. This week had 6 working days because the local working calendar is mad. But at least I was able to code quietly with zero calls and meetings

A little lifehack (maybe?) for Chrome users. You could create separate Chrome profiles if you have different "areas" in your life, such as personal, work, side projects, etc. Each might have its own history, bookmarks, and stored logins/passwords

This actually works great for me too I wish I had more places to change though If there is non-coding work to be done, I could move to the nearest coffee shop

Every time I'm having a hard time to motivate myself to work on things I just grab my laptop and move to a different room. It kinda resets my brain 'cause the environment has changed. I heard people recommend to rearrange your furniture from time to time for the same reason.

But first, I'm going for a walk

9-5 grind is over. It's time to plan a weekend grind (jk, I don't grind - I'm europoor) But anyway, I have a critical feature missing that makes my app hardly usable for me. That's what I want to fix this weekend. If it's good, it would also justify transitioning to a subscription model

I wanted to have a developer-focused place to write when I started At the time, the top picks were Hashnode and Dev.to, and Hashnode's editor was better I never even considered Substack TBH, it does not click to me as developer-focused

Remember, when you pay for Hetzner with PayPal you need to push the pay button manually each month It does not do that automatically Lesson learned

I have a dozen drafts in my blog that I never finished. The last one is supposed to be about self-hosting dotnet apps with Kamal. I've struggled to finish it for several weeks! Again today, I opened it, wrote a couple of lines, and closed the laptop in rage and frustration 1/2

"It's terribly written and not needed anyway, why am I wasting my time on this?" I thought. I'm absolutely not happy with this mental state but don't know how to overcome it. And the older the draft, the less desire I have to get back to it. Does anyone know how to solve this?

I would say my programming language journey is bit boring 2011 C# (desktop winforms apps) 2014 C# (mobile Xamarin apps) 2015 C# (desktop winrt apps) 2016 C# (web api apps) 2019 C# (cloud-native apps, cloud functions) 2021 C# (web apps) 2024 C# (web apps again but with a bit of htmx) What's yours?

My company introduced mandatory gorilla tests to evaluate employees Out of curiosity, I passed the test 2 months before the deadline, it was meaningless as expected and stole 1h of my life My company canceled mandatory gorilla tests and they don't even give me the results meh

The last free tool I made has generated the most visits so far (yeah, I know these numbers are statistically meaningless 🤡) #buildinpublic
