A Core Banking dev from NatWest shared how the management makes everyone generate code with LLMS: there is an expectation of at least 3 features delivered with AI per month, and they are discouraged from using "expensive" models (Claude Opus). Everyone on the floor knows it's going to backfire and

enjoys the ride. They know that they the bank can't have severe service degradation or go out of business. So, the stuff they generate now will ensure their job security for years, if not decades.

It seems that the cause of the recent UK flight disruption is an out-of-order message processing bug. The damage is still being estimated - it's somewhere between tens and hundreds of millions: 2,000 flights, affecting more than 330,000 passengers. Passengers are unlikely to be compensated.

Forty minutes of sanity for all those who are sick of all the AI drama.

I am surely not alone in having family over the weekend hitting me up asking "should I be worried about extinction?" As a response, I have found that my anti-Doomer talk from @monktoberfest.com 2023 (three very long years ago!) remains current and accessible: www.youtube.com/watch?v=bQfJ...

What I like about Ash is that it gently pushes towards vertical slices. What I don't like about it is that it then stands in the way :) www.planetgeek.ch/2024/09/19/o... I have a mixed split in my side-project: - auth and onboarding are features - hmrc and finexer are split by data ownership

I'm using @ash-hq.org for the first time and I believe their tagline should be: *Ridiculously powerful* The amount of heavy-lifting they do is absolutely bonkers. All the stuff you don't *want* to care about in a web app is just being taken care of. *Massive* kudos to everyone involved!

And that put `taxes` in a real awkward spot which I'm dealing with right now. That might have been a futile time waste unless I would listen to the pain of wasting my time dancing on the same place.

What makes a difference is paying attention to what makes me feel uncomfortable and being open to figuring out the reason. Which turned out to be a disconnect between my activity and solving actual problem. I think I'll write a blog post about this later on.

It took me an evening to get initial understanding of how to use GenServer and about four days for it to really click. And year and a half till the first "ahha" with Leitmotif. For some reason GenServer also brought more satisfaction.

What I see during the hiring process is that EU/UK market doesn't financially reward professional growth after a certain point. IMO it's because most of the businesses still don't know how to make the best use of the digital phenomena. Software is a revolution that still didn't fully catch up.

The biggest motivation for me to make my own business over all the years was my preferred working rhythm: I like to think walking in the park. I like to explore small avenues and corners of various solutions that come to my mind. And implement it only then.

I highly recommend this if you're like me - a backend developer looking to understands CSS better. Together with @joshwcomeau.com course it's really what moved the needle for me.

It's been two months since I launched The Layout Maestro interactive CSS course. For Eid, I'm running a $25 discount through Sunday, May 31. If you've been keeping the course on your radar, this is a good week to enroll in the course. thelayoutmaestro.com

That's so heartwarming, positive and reassuring. I hope UK can become a world leader in meaningfully transforming the tax system to build a healthier society. Go UK 🇬🇧

Stunned, appalled, shocked etc to see actual tax reform from a politician. This from Wes Streeting today. A thread on why capital gains tax is broken. It's too low AND too high. & why this is a good proposal.

The ongoing stream of software engineering pieces that mention that the future is in writing spec but never bother to define what a specification is or at what abstraction levels it should be is appalling; arguably, tickets are a spec, the code is a spec, and work between both is connecting dots.

J. Paul Getty recognised four motivational categories: 1. Those who work best for themselves 2. Those who don't want to build a business but perform best when they share in the profits 3. Salaried employees 4. Unmotivated workers

I can't express how much happy I'm that #AI takes care of boring, nitpicking stuff. The whole value creation pyramid has moved one level up. And there are technical models that will get an enormous benefit from that. Paper Design is one of them. The same design imported from Claude Design

Claude's own explanation: Paper’s write_html takes full CSS with flex, auto-sizing, and percentage widths that just work — it’s basically a browser renderer. Penpot’s plugin API is a design tool where every shape starts with fixed dimensions and you have to explicitly set each of its properties

(cont.) Paper: write HTML once, everything flows. Penpot: create each shape, then configure 3-4 sizing properties per element, and some of them don’t persist on the first set.

After depleting Claude Design budget you can export design into Paper.Design and edit there. I don't know any other tool that would allow to embed Claud Design into a workflow with such efficiency.

Here is a bad thing about "evaluation-driven development". It's a good thing until it's not. And at some point every piece of code is not. But if you wrote it, then you can improve, if LLM wrote it, it's "Make no mistakes" ⌨️🐒. #LLM #AICode #VibeCoding #SoftwareEngineering #TechTakes
