I bet “teamwork makes the dream work” went so hard the first time someone said it (or maybe it flopped because the rhyme was too intense) Either way it’s midnight and I’m struck by how weird it is that “teamwork” and “group project” have such opposite connotations/ associations

Nothing says “one individual putting the whole team on their back” more than “group project” and nothing says “work as a team” more than “teamwork” lol

People talk a lot about “lizard brain” as the source of their primordial survival instincts but I think this underrates the power and simplicity of a botanical analogy. Like sometimes we just need water and fertilizer, and then we grow in the direction of light and warmth, and that’s it 🤷🏻‍♀️

And another thing: I have cool hobbies that I pursue in my private life despite being a public figure. Please don’t put in the newspaper that I have cool hobbies that I pursue in my private life despite being a public figure.

I have a serious take and a silly take on this whole thing The serious take is that people have a hard time reconciling themselves to the fact that some people just are better than them at some things. Obama is way better than most people at a lot of things. The fact that he is black created a

The Cheesecake Factory “controversy” is nice because it’s a rerun of the exact kind of stupid shit we had to sit through every day of the Obama administration. Now Zoomers don’t have to feel left out of having their own Obama “controversy” to reference.

The silly take is just that people aren’t clocking the fact that the joke works because “Cheese-cake-factory” is just an extremely fun combination of words. Substitute any other restaurant name—it is wayyyyyyyyy less fun!

Feel like I could have written the above way more clearly but the TL;DR is -Obama embodies excellence -Obama is black and endured unspeakable racism -Some people can’t handle excellence generally -Excellence should be celebrated -Cheese, cake, factory, is a very funny combo of words

level of resentment that one can only hope will be purged from closed minds over time. But the more general phenomenon that it takes a strong spine to acknowledge when people just are better than you are at doing stuff w/o making it a fake debate about elitism is true even separate from the racism.

And we obviously should never downplay the level of blatant, overtly hateful, racism Obama had to face. But I think it is also part of a broad trend of social resentment toward excellence. Anti-intellectualism and culminating in science denial is an another example.

Btw this post was inspired by seeing Samara Weaving—niece of Hugo Weaving—in Ready or Not and being like wowowowow this gal is a star

Whether “nepo baby” lands as an insult/critique totally depends on the specific job and whether they are good at it yeah? A combo of whether the normal selection process is ever actually meritocratic and how talented the specific person is?

With full compassion to the mom who felt “overwhelmed by the range and complexity of potential answers” (I really reallyyy try not to critique parents except in cases of harm and neglect) this kind of cognitive offloading is unfathomable to me. I’m not a parent but a big part of my desire

to have children is, like, to meet these little humans again and again as they develop their own goals, interests, values! In an article draft I argue that duties of care require a close sensitivity to a person’s specificity, seems like noticing such things is one of the primary joys of parenthood??

I loved going to the place I linked above (Golden Gate Fortune Cookies) when I lived in the Bay Area. iirc it’s one of the few remaining original fortune cookie bakeries, was v affordable, and you can get cute bespoke ones in different flavors and diff themes for diff events (e.g. horny fortunes)

I won’t hold my breath for this happening for all those times I taught Nicomachean Ethics but it could happen. In principle it could happen.

One thing that is nice about starting a Lord of the Rings Extended Edition re-watch at 11pm on a Friday is that you really do choose your own adventure. The length of the movie and ridiculous start time takes away the pressure to watch it all. But you could. You could watch it all 👀

I sorted out my voter registration yday (it got complicated by living abroad for many years and moving around a lot for school and work). I went irl to the county clerk’s office and it made me genuinely emotional how motivated and friendly everyone was! All to the goal of helping me cast my ballot 🥺

How about give me $1.2B to do shit like this instead

Kindergarten ass startup idea. We already have genetically engineered war dogs they are called dogs (some breeds more than others obvi). It is also weirdo behavior to invest capital and brainpower into sending more dogs to war *for humans* to get hurt *by humans*. Let dogs do dog stuff ffs.

Turns out trust and collaboration can in fact take place when there is a power asymmetry (whether due to age or education or income or social capital or whatever). It happens, like, literally all the time….. in every domain of human activity……….

It’s actually incredible how much of good policy making just is (the very nuanced and value laden and important and complicated process of!) finding the right balance between type 1 and type 2 errors

Adulthood is when the big cultural references on network tv become tailored to your demographic and so the fact that a Dancing With The Stars clip posted to social media on a random weekday made me tear up is because I’m a Grown Up actually
